IN THE FORESTS of ROUTE 120 dwelt an ancient shrine. Its torii, a style of traditional gate painted red, stood out amongst the towering trees that shielded the ground below from most of the sunlight. These gates marked a stone-paved trail that led across grassy hills, past roaring waterfalls, and through serene streams, until reaching the locale.

And it was in this scenic scene that a man challenged Amelia Livy to a battle. In the distance, the ancient shrine burned, sending plumes of black smoke upwards past the canopy of leaves and into the sky. But, insistent on a battle and seemingly unbothered by the event, the man summoned a GLISCOR and sent it forward.

"I can't fathom what's going on back there," He states, feigning innocence. "But it'd be rude to turn down a fellow trainer's request for battle, wouldn't it?"

And, with little care for warning, his Gliscor shoots forward with a POISON JAB.

Challenging her to a battle? At a place like this? At a time like this?

Lia may usually be gentle in her ways, but she clicks her tongue at his obvious pretence, eyes as if made of glistening gold defiantly meeting his. She’s glad in her ranger uniform, bow quiver tied to her hip.

”Stop this. You really don’t want to get in my way.”
[break][break]
But, that’s exactly what she does, and just as the Gliscor begins its charge, she clicks the button of the Ultra Ball in her hand.

There’s blinding light, Gliscor’s POISON JAB meeting the metallic body of golden Steelix that stares down at it as if it were no more than a mosquito to swat.

”Helix!”
[break][break]
Frost coats the steel serpent’s fangs, Helix attempting to bite down on the Gliscor with its ICE FANGS.

They don’t have time for this. They need to get to the shrine. They need to save what they can…

The Gliscor releases something of a hiss after the tip of its tail meets steel-gold. Though its face shifts into a scowl, the shark-like smirk on its master's expression remains. The girl probably saw past his ruse, sure. But battling her seemed more fun with every passing second.

Meanwhile, his wicked bat manages to get itself caught within the snap of icy fangs. It shrieks out with an awful sound before freeing itself with a NIGHT SLASH it strikes at the Steelix's jaws. But, even as it haphazardly glides away afterward, Belial reaches for his next ball.

"Not bad," The mercenary captain remarks, casting his eyes on the golden serpent. "Paint job?"

It’s not fun for her. Battles like these have never been fun, but that does not mean that Lia won’t do what needs to be done.

A single goal, a single purpose, the Steelix as if in sync with her wishes from the moment she called upon it.

It bit down on the Gliscor with all of its might, but the fang scorpion still got free, a point-blank NIGHT SLASH causing the Steelix to let out a piercing cry.

A cry that summons a ROCK SLIDE.
[break][break]
”I don’t paint my pokémon.” She stares at the man, standing her ground despite the sudden avalanche of rocks. A ranger of golden eyes, a golden Steelix fighting by her side. ”What do you want with the shrine? Did you do this?”

Of course he did, the accusations and anger in her tone are clear.

The rock slide that comes is mostly evaded by the bat. When it finds itself unable to keep up for much longer, however, Belial returns it to its ball with a flash of silver. And, seamlessly, he summons a burly MACHOKE.

It beats it chest and roars at the Steelix as Belial responds. "The shrine? I don't know what you're talking about. I was just taking a leisurely stroll with my Pokémon." He smirks, propping a foot on a boulder as he leans in and wags a finger at her, his other hand hooked against his belt. "How about you, hm? What's your League ID number?"

There’s something about the way he mocks her that makes her blood boil, and for a moment, Lia considers abandoning her goals. He’s clearly responsible for all of this, why does he seem so certain that he can get away with it?

If there’s anything Lia can’t stand, it’s when people are this condescending.

”Oh, please. Who do you think I am?” An idiot, apparently. An amusing toy for him to play with. Shouldn’t she play along to try to get some information? Maybe, but Lia wears her emotions upon her sleeve, and she has never been a good actress. ”You won’t even give me your name?”

Her question is spoken over the sounds of the fight, the huge Steelix looking down upon the Machoke before swinging its golden IRON TAIL at it with all of its might.

With large and meaty hands, the Machoke stands his ground and seizes the Steelix's tail when it comes. Veins bulge and muscles flex as it uses its superhuman strength to twist the Steelix sideways into the flowing stream.

Like an ape wrangling a cobra, it tries to whip the snake-like body against the ground and force it into SUBMISSION. Though it sustains damage from doing so.

"That's the thing! I don't have the faintest clue!" Belial sneers in the meantime. "My name's Martín del Mar . Don't forget it." He winks. "Wanna know my sign next?"

Not that this guy isn’t, but the smug attitude and the whole being an arsonist who challenged her to a battle to stop her from doing her job sure takes away more than a few points. Also the fact that she’s this close to grabbing her bow and shooting him for good measure.

He fucking wishes he were as handsome as the rich CEO who appears in all those ads. Who, according to that one interview with BARNABY FINCH that Lia listened to last week, is also a pretty good guy who does a lot of philanthropic work!

”You know what? I’m done with your games.” Just as the Machoke seems to have achieved its goal and the Steelix begins to give in, light engulfs its body, shining just as bright as the colourful keystone she wears as an earring. The Steelix almost doubles in size when it MEGA EVOLVES, its roar seeming to shake the whole forest.

"Oh? You mean the body-double? He's alright, I guess." Belial smirks, casting a flippant hand backwards. Regardless, a MEGA-EVOLVED STEELIX was much more trouble than it was worth right now.

Casting a quick look towards the plume of smoke afar, the mercenary figured the evidence had been thoroughly burned away at this point. So he returns his Machoke, almost simultaneously summoning his Gliscor before offering the girl a short salute goodbye.

"Nice battle and all, but we never agreed on mega evolution, you naughty girl." He chastises, stepping backward as he nears the side of a small cliff. "Maybe some other time though, huh?"

Then, suddenly, he drops out of view... until his Gliscor shoots upward and into the sky, with the mysterious black-haired man riding it as a self-propelled glider.
