There a small sigh of mild disappointment. Not in Angelo, just in the lack of confirmation. Perhaps she needed to talk to John Sullivan, after all. What was he up to now a days, anyway? Or maybe she just needed to go back to Sootopolis with another fragment of a Primal Crystal and see what happens. An ache runs up her spine as a remnant of the last time she did that at the Tree of Life. It turns out Infinity Energy and Primal Energy do not mix well.

“I see,” she says, letting the picture neatly fall back into the portfolio before she shuts the document all together, “I’m trying to link it’s disappearance to Primal Energy somehow,” Because that means it isn’t gone. But disappeared in ash?

Eva’s head tilts slightly like a curious Poochyena. After rummaging through another section of her chaotic piles, she pulls yet another file. When she flips it open, Angelo would see a photo of an Unown F. The normally black pokemon is coated in a fine, red ash. Beside it is another picture – a collection of red ash from the site of Groundon’s appearance on Mt. Chimney, “Ash like this?”

All Angelo has to offer the professor is a shrug when faced with her downcast reaction, there was little more information that he could provide her. At least, he thinks, there had been plenty of others on the scene that might be able to give her a bigger picture.

The pilot had been about to offer getting in contact with those he's more familiar with for her, when the blonde suddenly perks up, like a fire had been lit beneath her feet.

Blue eyes blinking wide, he watches with grabbed intrigue as she's suddenly flipping through her mountain of mess, pushing a new document his way.

What meets him is an image of an Unown - that sends a rock down to the pit of his stomach - followed by a collection of red particles.

Recollection flickers in the back of his mind, an answer balanced on his lips but not yet fully formed.

“Actually, that does look familiar.” He taps on the photograph, the brilliant red like dust caught in a sunbeam in his mind, sparkling and slipping teasingly through his fingers.

“Tell you what, there were some samples taken during the clean-up. I think they might've sent me the results, too - I guess just because I happened to be there.”

Angelo had briefly looked, before it had been buried in his cluttered inbox and forgotten, back when it was even more disorganised during his courier days.

It had been irrelevant to him then, after all.

“If I can dig it up, I can send them over to you.”

Tomorrow night, Angelo would email Eva the results of the soil sample studies following Rayquaza's attack on the Sootopolis lighthouse. When compared to the data that she had gathered on Mt. Chimney, the two ash analysis would make for an identical match. Originated from a time period long ago.

The way her eyes light up at Angelos’ recognition is unmatched. They grow wide, along with her smile, “Really?!” she asks when he recognizes the crimson powder. Eva turns the picture to look at it herself, admiring the red ash as flashes of memories run across the front of her mind.

“That you be awesome! Thanks so much!”

This is why collaboration is so important. You can try to be everywhere at once, but in reality, you can’t. Learning from others only bolsters the knowledge one seeks.

Enough about her and her inquires. Eva has asked all the questions she has for the pilot. He has been, and will be, indispensable in her research. Now, she wishes to offer her own help to him, “Tell me about your ventures, the islands you’re charting. What makes them so special?” she’s not a Hoenn native, so some of the myth and lore escapes her no matter how hard she searches.

“It's no problem,” his words expel in a breath of amusement, Eva's excitement infectious. The love the professor held for her work was clear in her face as she marvels at the picture, as if mesmerised by a new piece of her puzzle awaiting to be unlocked.

Angelo knows the feeling of discovery all too well, how passion makes you want to run to the edge of the world. Always hungry for another bite.

He doesn't even think about asking anything from her in return for the information. “Just buy me a drink sometime and we'll call it even.” Nothing that will get him ahead, anyway.

In honesty, he'd half expected the conversation to wind down then, now that deals had been forged and satisfaction glittered in emerald eyes. But it seemed it was Angelo's turn to have the stardust ensnared within his wanderlust eyes to shine.

“The Hoennians call them Mirage Islands,” he starts, leaning forward towards the map that Eva had on the kitchen countertop. “They don't think anything of them, just how it's always been, I guess... But what interests me, is that they have a habit of disappearing.”

A fingertip taps on a stretch of blue near Lilycove, one well known amongst the sailors that depart from the docks. “There's one around here. Likes to show up on a Tuesday. Made me think I was going nuts when I first started charting the ocean territories.”

So naturally, he had to find them all...

Eva smiles at his request for ‘payment’ for the information, “I can absolutely do that, sometime!” a drink doesn’t even come close to the value of what could potentially come from this information.

The doctor quickly tucks away her distractions to listen to Angelo’s description of his current ventures. He’s well-travelled, curious, and always hunting for more, just like her. His own endeavors my just be beneficial to hers, so she listens closely.

Mirage Islands, whole bodies of land that just disappear, and apparently, reappear, “Do they always reappear in the same spot?” they must, since he has the schedule of one already fairly well memorized. On Tuesday.

She finds it all very interesting, especially since Hoenn seemed to have a lengthy history of things ‘disappearing’. According to Angelo and the tales of the Hoennian sailors he mentioned, this has been going on for quite some time.

“Have you been to it yet? The island?” Anything that 'disappeared' in Hoenn now required closer inspection. Eva feigns checking her calendar with a familiar grin, emerald eyes flashing back up to Angelo with a hint of adventurous mischief, “I’m free this Tuesday.”

Angelo was no scientist. Everything he had figured out about the Mirage Islands, that he had documented on the maps back in his makeshift office in messy handwriting, were from observation alone. From experiencing them, leaving footprints upon their dirt and watching the waves lap at their shores from above.

It led to a more intimate level of understanding between island and pilot. But limited, he knew.

Resting his chin in his palm, elbow propped upon the table, Angelo's gaze travels to Eva. Noting the bubbling of curiosity, sitting on her surface. “This one does.” He says with a knowing smile, unhidden but untold.

Fanning the flames of adventure, in her and him alike.

Mischief ripples off Eva, unapologetic and Angelo's lips split into a wide smile, genuine laughter bubbling as he sits up straighter.

“You don't say?” Her playfulness is met with a roguish smile of his own, Angelo thriving in this kind of back and forth. “That's a one in a million coincidence. I'm free Tuesday, too.”

They're going to get on just fine, he thinks.

“Feeling up for a field trip, Doctor?”
