“INDEED.”

there is no doubt to be found within his affirmation. to play out an act requires commitment. hesitation breaks the immersion of a performance. and he needs her seated, planted with investment, as the scenario unravels.

he doubles down. her challenge is met with his hand encompassing her own. the seeds sit in her palm, sealed in a promise with his own covering them as they exchange hands. he could swallow her whole if not for the inappropriateness of it all.

“i was hoping you wouldn’t find it too intrusive of an ask.”

whatever partnership they had ended when her labor met his demands. it was a simple task—if not excessive. but that was no more than a transaction she was open to, the very nature of her work, doted with a token of appreciation upon completion.

to extend it toward something of this caliber, to make a request that isn’t openly invited, requires courage.

it requires trust.

“but i see i had nothing to worry about.”

he trusts her with his seed. how deep she allows it to invade her garden remains to be seen.

Elisabeth had anticipated the depositing of the sachet in her palm, but not the encompassing of his hands around hers. Despite herself, she felt her body stiffen in response, her posture becoming rigid as her bare skin unexpectedly met his. This defensive shift was minute, so subtle that it could go unnoticed by most. And yet at the distance between them, Elisabeth suspected very little escaped his attention.[break][break]

Hadn't his heightened perception been one of their first topics of conversation, in fact?[break][break]

"Not intrusive at all," Elisabeth said instead; her fingers curled around the small pouch, her gaze meeting his despite the sudden pounding in her chest. There was something familiar in the sensation, though she didn't want to dwell on what. "Consider it done, then."[break][break]

There were some who said even the beat of a single Beautifly's wings could have ripple effects so far-reaching they could result in monstrous tornados. A butterfly effect. Perhaps being paired that day with Fernando Silph was one such encounter, two private individuals forced to share something of themselves with one another in the span of five minutes.[break][break]

The contact between their hands had lasted only seconds, but it felt like the crawl of hours. The desire to break away warred with the expectation that he would release her, sooner rather than later, and erase the possibility of her appearing rude.[break][break]

HE NEARLY MISSES IT. her movement is so small that he second guesses whether it happens at all. was it a mere twitch? his read stops somewhere in the middle, uninterested in looking deeper when he barely trusts his own eyes.

suspect but never accuse—not until certain.

“i appreciate you.”

words bear down in a way his gaze can never match. that’s why they work in tandem. building upon each other makes him both endearing and domineering—depending on the perspective.

a reminder of the time creates a safe pocket of distance between them. his attention is drawn away in the same manner she had dismisses her pokemon, floating away to settle on the glossy surface of his smart watch.

duty comes first.

“indeed it has.”

despite being shooed away, his smile never wanes.

“that’ll be it. until next time.”

In contest halls, on late night phone calls as slumber beckoned, or in unanticipated morning detours from her rigid schedule. There was a safety in the barriers they represented, in the distance they forced between two people.[break][break]

As FERNANDO SILPH checked his watch in answer to her dismissal, however, it felt as if he was checking another timer entirely.[break][break]

"Until we speak again, then," Elisabeth echoed politely, pocketing the seedling as she ushered them both through the back door. The cottage felt smaller after wandering the extensive fields of her garden, and in this suddenly confining space, she took a surreptitious glance of the taller councilman as he advanced towards the exit.[break][break]

"Thank you for your time, as always, Mr. Silph."[break][break]

There's nothing in the statement that was strange or different than her usual farewell with clients, at first blush. Except that its weight was twofold, and Elisabeth knew this better than most. That for powerful men like Silph and her late husband, the most valuable wealth they possessed in all the world was their time.[break][break]

Which made it all the more perplexing he had so leisurely spent that finite resource on her, here.[break][break]

"Perhaps when next we speak, the Gracidea flowers will be in bloom."

the conclusion of every encounter always comes easier with falling action. sparse thanks and pleasantries make for an easy out. the need to uphold impressions departs well before his body makes it out the door.

the lack of purposeful expression brings peace of mind. their conversation is bland, simple, relaxing even, now that his wit can rest and raw instinct auto pilots his words.

“i have no doubt they will be.”

he pauses once more. tilting his head in the same manner that portrays a moment of contemplative thought. it’s his last parting gift before crowning his victory.

“unless you want me to visit before then.”

and with that, it is his win. how honeyed sweet it tastes to come out on top, not due to some supreme lexicon or obtuse show of intellect, but by rather placing the onus on her. ultimately, the decision is up to her but the implication is already there.

it’d be rude not to.

“i look forward to your next call, miss fiorelli.”

and the sound of her voice late at night on the other end.
