he just doesn't get it. and knox can't explain it to him, can't show him the things he's been reading up on in the seedier parts of the web. places he's gone when he's really needed a pinch and even summer wouldn't throw him a bone. even moro's texted him a couple of times to ask him what the fuck is going on.

and none of this he can tell sam. because then sam won't let him leave. sam won't let him try to fix it.

but there's this space between them and it balloons now, pushing knox away. his fingers unclasp from sam's and he steps away, hugging himself to try and trap that heat while he turns his back and looks up at the stars.

"i said no, sam."

immediately it is decided in the absence of the boy who has taken his very will into control, sam hates that distance.

if he has to kill whatever protective rage bubbles inside of him to protect knox, he will. right then and there, he will kill it. he will bury it where his soul can never find it again. just to keep that distance from happening ever again.

maybe that will mend them enough that he’ll take sam’s hand again, or at least look at him. but the stars are clear from where they stand and it has sam looking up. at least they can meet there, in the sky. gazes fixed on slowly collapsing worlds of gas.
