It’s always good to start at the beginning, but Eva wouldn’t even know what the beginning is so she trusts him when he starts, trusts him to tell her the whole thing even though it would probably break her.

Immediately, her heart aches when he mentions her name: Eris Halla. The absence of the child left an emptiness that made her feel hollow. It’s a similar feeling to when she left Kanto and Matias behind. The name also brings panic. Eva’s eyes widen as the rush of scenarios stream through her head, “Eris? Is she alright?” Eva steps closer, desperate to know. The only scenario her mind would accept was that something attacked both of them, Rocket most likely.

He says things she doesn’t quite understand. Well, at least not right now. The expression on her face is blank, reflecting the numbness she feels from the shock. Eva is frozen – stiff like a statue. A strange buzz rings in her ears, spreading down and towards the tips of her fingers.

Eva finds herself struggling because she doesn’t want to understand, doesn’t want to accept the fact that Matias and Eris Halla were even capable of such things. To protect herself, her mind chooses to not understand, working hard to erect a wall that would prevent the inevitable collapse of a fragile, beautiful life she’s allowed herself to build.

It’s a futile and noble effort by logical mind, stunned with emotions, “But she’s ok – right?” it’s all she can think of to say. Her voice is strained, pushing past the suffocating knot growing in her throat.

She blinks, eyes widening in sudden shock. It’s as if his words snap her out of whatever trance she had fallen into. The hum in her chest intensifies. Eva’s hand reaches out to steady herself on the counter. It feels cool beneath her touch, a stark contract to heat that’s risen inside her.

“You don’t care?!” she’s surprised and appalled at the same time. A snake indeed. Unfortunately, his venom has penetrated deep into her soul, he’s as much as part of her as the blood that pumps in her veins.

“For Arceus’s sake, Matias, she’s just a child,” Beyond saving? Probably. Just like Kanto. But Eva prefers to hold on tight to her delusions. Hope can be powerful.

Blade tense behind her, the empath feeling uneasy at the shift in the air of kitchen. His crimson eyes awkwardly glance between the two, suddenly all too aware of his own intrusive presence.

“Yes, a child,” obviously their interactions with Eris Halla have been quite different. Eva saw a lost child, one that is confused, still searching for what she lost, what was taken from her.

How could you blame her for what happened and what she has become? “She didn’t choose to be in Rocket they took her,” and her future, “She doesn’t know any different,” how could she? She was never given the choice. Even her time with them was fleeting and forced.

The last part stings and she physically recoils, taking a small step back. Eva cared; she always has. Life is precious, “You’re wrong,” but his life would always be the most precious.

Matias has some valid points, but how could a child truly choose when they barely had a choice to begin with? Seduced by the ones that stole her family from her, painting a reality that she came to accept. To her, Eris had an innocence about her that was absolutely worth saving. She was backed into a corner like a feral cat, forced to defend what she loved. Eva could relate. She wouldn’t give up on him, “That fucking cat is the only real family she’s had,” from the beginning. He protected her, watched over her. As much as she’d love to be considered Eris’s family, Renier would always trump her, trump even Rocket at this point.

“Are you truly giving up so easily?” Eva would never understand, she wasn’t there. She doesn't know what Matias went through becuase he didn't tell her. To her, Eris was here one day, gone the next. She’s never seen the side of Eris he has.

Blinded by seeing the good in people, she refuses to believe that Eris is just – gone, “She is absolutely worth saving,” you are worth saving, she says it with certainty, furrowing her brows and pointing a finger for emphasis, “That is what separates us from them,” Among many other things: Forgiveness, hope, devotion, honesty, faith, loyalty.

Matias gave so much. He truly did. And Eris Halla rejected him, even Eva, every step of the way. They should have seen the signs, but the Eris he describes is not the Eris Eva knows. She sees a lost girl, confused, searching for something she might never find. Eva sees a girl woken up in the middle of the night, sobbing, from nightmares that followed her from Kanto. Was Eris truly capable of something like this? Had Eris played Eva, taking advantage of her maternal instinct?

She can’t believe it, can’t accept the truth. Something changed. A seed of doubt has now been planted.

What if she actually killed Matias? Eva quickly glances at his back and the remnants of the hours she spent stitching it up. Eris came close. If Eris had actually done it, Eva wouldn’t be saying the same things. That thought breaks her.

Eva wraps her arms across her chest, retreating into herself as tears build at the corners of her eyes, “Is she really that gone?” Something changed, “D-Did we do this to her? Drive her right back to them?”

Did they truly do their best? Or did they do too much? Not enough? They certainly didn’t do something right for this to be the result. Perhaps she should have been around more while Eris Halla was here. Would that have made a difference?

Eva shakes her head, sniffing back tears. Giving up is something she doesn’t really know how to do. She’s stubborn, dedicated, and committed, “I – I don’t think I can,” Even if she wanted to, which she doesn’t. The sense of loss she feels from knowing Eris is simply out of their lives is deep and more painful than she imagined.

Despite wanting comfort, she finds herself shifting away from Matias as he approaches, giving him a wary look. The distraction of Eris hadn’t made her forget that he admitted to killing her ‘father’. It doesn’t settle well in her stomach, even if he was a Rocket. If Eris truly saw him as her father-figure, then her hate of Matias is sealed, and of Eva by association.
