Her own scars manifested in different ways. Nightmares. Panic attacks at the mere presence of Emboar. An aversion to human touch, unless invited by her own hands. A disconnection from her own body, as if it belonged to someone else entirely. [break][break]

The lust in Gavin's eyes was understood for what it was. A thirst for control and domination, one that could only be fully understood by someone who had squirmed like a worm under someone else's boot, desperate for a glimpse of sunlight as it burrowed deeper and deeper into the darkness.[break][break]

This distinct difference between them felt almost intrusive, a reminder that for all the ways in which she was like the man in front of her, in this one significant way they were not one and the same.[break][break]

One of them had the capacity for love, and the other did not. Who was the crueler monster between the two of them, indeed? It would have seemed an easier question to answer, a few hours ago.[break][break]

The wedding band on her left hand spun between her thumb and forefinger as she considered this, choosing ultimately not to voice the observation aloud. "The fires of progress," she managed to say at last. "Flames were where my late husband's house found its reverence, and power. I have only seen its capacity for destruction."[break][break]

Her eyes shut for a moment, witnessing an inferno of golden flames that scorched her path from every conceivable angle as she fled down the halls of Bortiforte Manor. The scar on her thigh throbbed with the memory as she opened her eyes with a stiff nod of agreement.[break][break]

"It is as you say. Everything depends on where you are standing."[break][break]

And where did Elisabeth stand, now? Her life in Hoenn had split into two parallel paths, the one she walked in the daylight as a civilian in Petalburg City, and the claim that Rocket held over her in the shadows of night.[break][break]

Sometimes it felt as if she were two different people: an echo of who she used to be, and the warped version of herself that reality had thrust upon her. Elisabeth had spoken as the latter here, with Cillian Quinn. That was the person she ached to remain, a lamb that had worn a wolf's pelt for so long that she had forgotten her fleece.[break][break]

The other part of her, well. How much of that woman was still alive and true, to begin with? A peace lily flourishing on a grave in Kalos came to mind, dismissed as quickly as it was recalled.[break][break]

"I will not make the mistake of underestimating you, Elisabeth."[break][break]

Gavin's compliment brought Elisabeth out of her internal dilemma, its sincerity evoking frank surprise on her face. How many times had being underestimated played to her advantage, in the past? Being perceived, seen as a threat, was new to her -- for even in Kalos, hadn't the papers considered it a mental break, and not a calculated execution?[break][break]

"Thank you." The two words held weight, followed by silence. "I have never underestimated you, Gavin. I assure you that I never will."[break][break]
