When Calem circles around the Unown, the pokémon turns accordingly, following the man’s movements and watching him as closely as he watches it. It’s almost as if it were amused by the situation, but then again, not even Mars can tell for sure if Unown are capable of feelings like those, and he owns over a dozen of them.

”It is an Unown, yes. I have seen some of their depictions in art, but I imagine you may know more about that subject than me.” There’s a polite smile, although his words are not entirely true. When it comes to Unown, the lengths of his research probably border on concerning. Still, there’s so much he doesn’t know…

”It’s interesting, isn’t it? That they appear in art from long before our records of written language… There’s no way of knowing which came first.”

As they talk, Mars watches the Unown, and in turn, the Symbol Pokémon soon directs its attention towards a Sinistea that appears from among the trees. Apparently, the Unown decides it doesn’t like the teacup spectre, because a HIDDEN POWER filled with dark energy is soon shot towards it.

Calem watches, almost amused himself, as the Unown assaults a Sinistea. A small laugh escapes him, hand lifted up to cover his mouth. His eyes even crinkle with mirth at the little show of violence. In the background, such violence is repeated by his Hatterenne. A Grumpig who wandered too close for a meal would find itself knocked unconscious before being secured in one of the pokeballs.

"It is a very hotly debated subject in some circles." While Calem didn't have such fervor for the Unown as Martín del Mar did, he did know his stuff with art and the community. Even if Mars already knows, he is happy to repeat the information. If, for nothing else, than to hear himself talk.

"There are records of Unown in common shapes from ancient languages... yet no surviving examples of those ancient symbols. Do you suppose they die out as our language dies out? Or just change so they can stay hidden? Why the need to look like our written languages?"

He hummed to himself. Soon following was a far more cursed question.

"Since they mimic modern languages would they someday change into... emoji...?"

Even if Mars wished to (and he certainly does not), there’s no way he would be able to quantify the amount of time he has spent researching Unown. Hours upon hours of reading paper upon papers and blog posts upon blog posts, no publication that takes itself seriously being seen as too insignificant to be worth his attention. Although, of course, anything with a peer review process is always preferable.

That being the case, he does know what Calem Pollet is talking about, but when hearing his theory, there’s inevitably a light laugh.
