the sight of the comfey reminds him of young Greyson Connors. he wonders how the gym leader is doing as it's been a while. maybe he'll need to pay the man a visit later this week.[break][break]

for now, matias watches with a sense of admiration as eva takes control of the situation. he takes a step back, allowing her the scene and the applause that follows from children, parents, and teachers alike.[break][break]

matias claps as well, and just for a moment, he forgets about all the problems that currently plague them.[break][break]

When it’s all said and done, the gymnasium applause is better than she expected for children. The teachers and parents seemed content too now that the room smells like a fresh field of flowers. The Comfey around her wrist unravels, snaking her way up to around Eva’s neck, “Nice work,” she praises, nuzzling the pokemon with her cheek.

Matias really knows how to put on a show. Eva shouldn’t be surprised. He had her fooled for a while.

“That when better than I thought it was going to,” she whispers, standing on her tippy toes so he can hear her. A reporter comes over, ushering them towards the Snorlax and the children gathering around the base of the pokemon.

“Oh! A photo op I guess, sure,” she shrugs and glances over at Matias.

matias leans towards her, making it just a bit easier for her to whisper.[break][break]

they laugh at almost anything. slip on stage? laugh. snorlax snoring? laugh. it's the parents and the teachers that are the more tricky crowd to crack. still, matias somehow manages this time. again, must be the great pr training he received.[break][break]

he glances over at the reporter, at the request, then at eva before shrugging.[break][break]

"sure."[break][break]

where he would've been enthused before, he feels...awkward? awkward. but there's not much he can do. so he smiles, takes her hand in his, and leads them over to the snorlax and the children for their photo.

Well, she couldn’t argue there. Kids could be quite easy to entertain. That, or they were screaming their heads off in a tantrum and nothing in the world could soothe them. Luckily, there were no tantrums today.

Awkward is good word, but it’s more than that. She’s feels like a liar, putting a false face on for the world while keeping his secrets close to her chest. It feels dirty and manipulative. No one can find out.

She smiles with a nod, taking his hand and let him lead her over to the Snorlax and children. They set up in neat rows, all huddling together to fit into the frame. She slips an arm around his waist, and smiles.

Once the photo op is done, chaos erupts. The children swarm them, asking questions about being an Elite 4, what’s it like batting all the time? How big was Groudon? Are they going to see it again? When’s his next tournament? Does he get an Silph discounts?

Eva also has her own string of questions that eventually breaks off into her lecturing about the Snorlax and some of its unique physiology. She even lends a child her stethoscope and lifts her up to listen to the loud, deep thrum of the beasts heart in its chest.

Then just like that, it’s over. And all the kids are shuffled back to their respective classrooms. They shake a few more hands then find themselves back where they started: Just outside the school’s entrance.

Eva turns to face him, “Thanks, not as impressive as you though . . . thanks for bailing me out,” honestly, she’s a bit embarrassed she wasn’t well-prepared. It’s very unlike her. She slips her hands back into her pockets and glances down at the sidewalk. The tip of her shoe moves to play with a small pebble.

“Evergrande, near my old place,” it’s not her old place, but there was some sponsored League housing available, although temporarily.

That’s a loaded question, and kind of catches her off guard. It’s a valid question though, one that needs to be asked. She’s asked herself this question more often than she should since she finished packing her small bag.

A longing gaze rises to meet his. She wants to be home, more than anything but, “I don’t know,” she responds quietly. It’s hard to be away, but it’s not easy to pretend nothing’s wrong. She’s had some time to think, but trust needed to be cultivated between them all over again. It starts with him apologizing, which is not likely considering his stubbornness.

The silence that follows hurts. She wants to grab him by the shoulders and shake it out of him. Give her something, anything, that shows he cares, that gives her some sense of hope, that convinces her loving him doesn’t make her a fool.

This question does come as a surprise. She can feel the tension rise in her shoulders, “I have,” she sounds ashamed despite having nothing to feel sorry for, “I ran into her in Lilycove. It was . . . awkward,” after a beat, she adds, “She’s so scared,” At least, Eva thinks she is. Her trust in both Eris Halla and Matias had been tested, and she still isn’t sure what to believe.
