their house in lilycove is now nothing more than a place for him to sleep. even as the door opens, it feels cold, empty, and void of the life and spirit that once existed. it had left with her but it still has not returned.[break][break]

It feels strange to step back into the house. It shouldn’t, but the newest memories bound within these walls involve deceit, anger, and frustration. She’s hesitant to cross the threshold, but with an easy breath, she does.

Despite the anxiety, it feels good to be home, especially as the curtains draw back and she’s bathed in the Hoenn sunset and a beautiful view of the beach and crashing waves.

“It’s good to be home,” she smiles, staring through the windows and off into the setting sun, almost forgetting why she’s here.

“Do you mind if I make some coffee?” She feels awkward asking permission, but it also feels strange just doing it, “I . . . haven’t been sleeping well,” Really, she hasn’t been sleeping much. “Thanks,” As they make their way to the kitchen, he’s reminded of dinner with his sister, and Eva’s reminded of her last moment here, pressing a bag of frozen peas against her cheek while he was forced to divulge his darkest secrets. Would this just be a repeat of last time? Now she wishes she didn’t want coffee.

Alright, two coffees. She pulls another mug out from the cabinet above her head. As the coffee maker bubbles to life, the kitchen is soon bathed in the sweet smell of fresh roasted coffee. As the comforting beverage brews, she turns to lean her elbows against the counter and face Matias.

“Oh, well, uh, that’s good I guess,” there shouldn’t be anything she doesn’t know, but here they are. She reminds herself to be open-minded and listen. Judgment sometimes comes too swift. She knows Matias is good, she’s seen it and experienced it. It’s part of why she loves him. There had to be a good explanation for his actions.

Before they continue, she does have to ask a question that’s plagued her. She’s raked her brain to reasons why he wouldn’t have been honest, and it always came back to one simple conclusion. He asked her the same question not that long ago, “Matias, do you trust me?”

Yes, the way he hesitates is very telling, and it doesn’t feel good to hear. She always thought she struck some chord deep enough to open him up. She was living a fantasy. If he can’t trust her, does that make her just like everyone else?

It’s a double-edged sword at this point. She regrets asking as soon as she says it. She already admitted to not trusting him, but she knows why she still loves him. Perhaps the difference is that she did trust him, fully, and she desperately wants to trust him again.

Eva doubts how far that trust stretches, but it does give her a sense of relief. At least she is different, and there is trust there. In typical Eva fashion, she’s naïve and hopeful. Maybe one day, if she’s lucky, he will trust her the way she trusted him, and in a sense, still does.

It’s hard to hide the small flush that rises in her cheeks. Standing up, she looks away, turning back towards the coffee and their mugs. A small, hidden smile peeks out from beneath her otherwise somber features.

She’s quick to fill the mugs and by the time she turns back around, the smile has faded. With both in tow, she moves around the counter to settle closer to Matias, “Here you go,” he’s presented with a piping hot cup of strong coffee, just the way she likes it. She perches up on a stool beside him, “Thank you,” For still being here. And for being honest.

“Alright,” she sighs, lifting the rim of the mug to her lips for a sip, “What is it you want to tell me?”

As Matias tells his story, you can see the color drain from her face. Her eyes widen slightly as she comprehends what that could possibly mean. She always wondered how it was so easy for Matias to rescue Melody. Now she knows.

Well, easy isn’t the work she’d use. He had to risk his own neck to bring her back to safety. It was selfless, but foolish. But Rocket has concrete evidence of his betrayal to do with what they please. And all this was before he killed Eris’s “Pa”.

Worst of all, he owes them a “favor”. And there’s no telling when or what that favor will be, “Matias that’s . . . that’s dangerous,” she assumes he hasn’t returned the favor, considering they still have the recording.

Eva nervously strums her fingers against the warm glass, biting her bottom lip as she reflects on that information, “What are you going to do about it?” He had to have a plan.

His apathy towards the situation is just as dangerous. It makes her nervous. She shifts uncomfortably in her seat, bringing both hands to the warm mug to find some sense of comfort. Her posture is stiff and anxious.
