a call to battle rings from beyond where the eye can see. the constant trashing of MUDDY WATER against his PROTECTIVE barrier drowns out lithe steps. matias’ backup is a green flash that gives the SWORD OF JUSTICE a run for its money.

“execute!”

the zygarde leaps up from behind their first line of defense. lanky legs contort as the pokemon twists itself in mid-air, maw open, poised to fire a SPRINGTIDE STORM at the swampert located below.

it won’t be enough to knock them out—not while in their superior MEGA EVOLVED forms—but the distraction will be enough to have them let up in the constant surge.

well behind matias, fernando is running to catch up, barely coming into view. the disparity in his arrival highlights just how fast the zygarde truly is.

MATIAS LOOKS TO HIM. he looks past him, onto the battlefield, where their attention is demanded.

“GRASS KNOT.”

the zygarde glows a bright green but the attack cannot be channeled until it lands. fernando knows this but says as much anyway, confident that his pokemon will use the split seconds between falling and actually landing to pinpoint its opponent’s position.

“four? five?”

fernando counts the enemies numbers to himself as he unlatches another pokeball, releasing his personal comfey in preparation for the battle to come.

“i’ll support you,” is the brief exchange he passes, already trying to anticipate virizon and kangaskhan’s next moves.

the GRASS KNOT was set to the MEGA SWARMPERT. and, when the zygarde lands, vines start to sprout from underneath one of them. plant life spirals out of control as the ground festers something more sinister.

they will know the LAND’S WRATH.

but the comfey around his wrist is more tactful than that. its affinity for manipulating plant life is second nature, born from the basis of its typing. the GRASS KNOT it summons starts to strangle out one of the sea trainers, preventing them from drawing more pokemon.

“one still.”

“TIGHTER.”

the GRASS KNOT around the sea trainer starts to constrict. fernando waits until he can see them audible struggle and wheeze before issuing the command to halt. not to dispel, but to stop applying further pressure.

only then does he feel satisfied with their inability to escape.

“well done.”

his compliment is honest but even that doesn’t get fernando to face his ‘brother’. then again, unless he has something to sell, matias isn’t the only one who isn’t sugarcoated with a fake exterior.

THE MOVEMENT IS AN ANNOYANCE he cannot shake. matias, for the limited time he’s known him, is not one for theatrics. there is no whimsy to his step. it’s purposeful. whether it gauge his own reaction or to be a pain in the ass still results in the same.

“it beats the alternative,” is his answer.

A NUDGE THAT MOVES NOTHING is a nudge that proves ineffective. just as fernando stands still so does his position in this exchange. in a test of ideals he does not compromise. not in front of those that cannot be trusted.

and who can he trust?

truthfully? no one. and as the multiverse has revealed, not even himself.

“there is nothing humorous about the sacrifice and unfortunate decisions we have to make.”

the lack of tact is not something he expects from matias. which, understandably, is surprising since he expects nothing from any of his ‘siblings’. but there comes a point when they cross the line.

it’s less about sympathy and more about principle.

which is why fernando starts to make a few calls so he can leave on his own accord.
