freya watches in dismay as their healing accomplishes nothing. no, not nothing. the pulses from her arrowhead die and she approaches the dragon cautiously, hands out before her. that yellow iris glimmers with pain and she sucks in a breath, anger twisting inside her. why sacrifice yourself to let us escape?

lyune shoulders past her, tongue forking over the dragon's cold scales. his tail flicks and the skin on the back of freya's neck prickles as her salamence outside give warning cries. it's coming. she raises a hand to lyune's side, teeth clenched.

and then he hums. it's soft, at first - almost like a purr. but quickly that sound rises in his chest until she can feel it thrumming over her own skin, giving her goosebumps that have nothing to do with the frigid air around them. the ice beneath him groans as he sinks his claws into it, hypnotic melody still growing ever-louder.

heat gathers around his maw, turning freya's cheeks red, and she realizes what lyune is attempting to do.

- - lyune's pupils pulse and he steps forward at the dragon lord's command, head bowed.

rayquaza exhales and searing hot flames engulf both dragon and tamer. freya starts, embracing what will be a swift death, but the flames billow around her harmlessly. her hands find lyune's side; energy ripples from him, glancing off of her. - -

"you gave us the power to escape once before," she whispers. "and now, we give it back." the mega stone wrapped in her braid flickers, power still spent and sputtering from lyune's own transformation. but she untangles it anyway, tears the black scale from her chest, and holds both as though in prayer.

outside, her salamence hiss another warning, but she does not hear it.

Melody braced against the cold wind, Cobalion quickly ending his coaching as he realized it was pointless to try and heal Rayquaza if they couldn't stop this snow storm keeping the ice healthy. [break][break]

Melody almost fell back from the gust of wind but Cobalion caught her just in time, she quickly pivots to mount Cobalion. "We either run or die fighting...what do you say Cobalion?" she asks wanting to see what he'd do. [break][break]

He drew his sword, the light from it emanating rebelliously against the cold storm approaching them suddenly. "I agree." she tells him as she sends out another pokeball. Her smeargle and returning her phione, she was still a child who hated fighting, "Whatever it is! It's coming fast! We either hide or fight!" she says as smeargles tries to boost it's own energy as it already had taught itself take heart.

There was precious little time left. He only understood Rayquaza's needs beyond healing after seeing the Doctor at work.

Slapping his own forehead, Doug produced three net balls from his sleeve.

Two Volcaronas and a Centiskorch appeared on the field.

"Help 'im get toasty, guys!" He commanded the fiery bugs, the trio moving in unison to assist Rayquaza.

As freya morningstar suddenly offered one of her Mega Stones, the youth stared in confusion before reaching into his hat, producing a Mega Stone of his own. He didn't know if it would do anything...

But if there was a chance it could help, he was willing to give it a try.

"This do anythin' for ya?" He asked bluntly as he wandered near the Dragon master, holding out the Orbeetite. However, at that moment...

"!" The youth suddenly turned on his heel sharply. "Something's coming!"

Garo's alert had rung through his head, loudly. A snow storm had appeared in the far distance, tearing through the remnants of the city towards them... and something sinister was hidden within.

Shit.

"Radar Squad- Prepare for Interception!" He ordered; his Orbeetle's moved into formation, the 4 non-mega evolved beetles spreading out in a cross-like formation around their Squad Captain, Garo.

Their minds synchronized, their psychic powers pooled together before it was channeled into the Mega Orbeetle, its eyes glowing like stars.

-The five Orbeetles are syncronizing their psychic powers and letting it be directed by Mega Orbeetle, Garo, into a super G-max Gravitas to try and stop/slow down the advance of the storm.
-Hopefully that does something.

The notion that they'd fucked up emerges as soon as the ice storm starts to pick up. Howling winds render communication extremely difficult, while ice and snow pelt the pillar as if in an attempt to swallow it. Even without knowing what lies at the center of the frozen tempest, Skyler becomes aware that they'd drawn it straight towards the ill dragon.

Not that Rayquaza looked like it'd be long for this world, but they'd had a small chance. Now, with advent of whatever foe had coated the surrounding world in gelid death, those same odds were looking awfully grim.

(Skyler would be pissed if she died on this world - that she landed on due to whim alone. She'd make sure to haunt John Sullivan for his role in it too.)

For now, however, she stands her ground and joins in the preparations along with everyone else. Tension lines the curve of her mouth and sharp eyes peer uselessly into the storm as her hand hovers over her pokeball belt.

Kingler is recalled, and a Gallade takes his place. By his side materializes an Urshifu, her beady black eyes quickly taking in the scenario. "Johnny. Arcturus. We have to defend," Skyler tells them both, fighting against strong gusts of wind to take her place between them. Around them and spreading across the hole that leads to the outside, blooms the translucent film of a WIDE GUARD. The Urshifu prepares a DETECT in case anything hurtles into the space.

While the captain has limited faith in what might result of... whatever freya morningstar 's attempting, it is better than crossing her arms and waiting for the ice to take her.

"If things go south, teleport us out of here," she tells Gallade on hushed words. She doesn't mean Rayquaza, or any of the others in their troupe. Hopefully, she thinks, it won't come down to that.

- recalls kingler, sends out both gallade and rapid strike urshifu (arcturus and johnny, respectively)
- gallade uses WIDE GUARD over the hole in the pillar
- urshifu uses DETECT in the storm's general direction, readying herself for any attack

They gather around the Rayquaza, providing possible life saving heat, “C’mon, Ponyta, you can do better than that,” she teases, stroking the filly’s warm fur. She snorts, her mane and tail glowing brighter as she puts more energy into her FLAME BODY.

Eva resumes her work, moving towards the serpent’s head to see it’s eyes peel open. Empty, weak, it breaks her heart, “Hold on . . . please,” she whispers before the Machamp’s frantic grunt and a growl calls Eva over.

The pokemon have stopped pounding away at the ice – and it’s clear to see why. Eva’s heart sinks when she sees the pokemon’s body frozen through. She reaches out to touch the beast’s scales, finger gliding over its cool, rough surface only to be pulled away sharply at the sharp pain of the Never-Melt-Ice.

In addition to the frozen flesh, Rayquaza is cemented to the Sky Pillar itself. Her mind twists and turns with possible techniques for removal and rehabilitation. None of them are quick. ‘I can’t fix this,’. And something is coming.

Something that would make their situation far worse.

Desperation sinks in before she can speak. The others start their preparations and freya morningstar goes as far as to offer the Rayquaza a Mega Stone. A burst of energy may give it temporary reprieve, but it won’t fix its ailments and it risks death lying here in the cold while a monster hunts.

“Syah, get ready,” the fighting-type nods and takes her place amongst the others, erecting a WIDE GUARD alongside skyler dross’s pokemon to reinforce it against the Ice Dragons assault.

[break][break]

“Blade, try to free it,” a series of PSYCH CUTS work diligently and precisely to cut beneath the dragon’s frozen flesh to loosen it from the stone. They’re running out of time, and so is Rayquaza. Even with Mega Evolution, it won’t last much longer in this hail storm, half frozen solid.

[break][break]

“Hoenn needs you, Rayquaza,” there’s desperation in her voice as she cries above the roar of the storm, “Don’t give up on us,” Eva stands beside the praying freya morningstar, an empty pokeball in hand. Getting in the pokeball would drastically decrease the progression of its injuries, perhaps enough to save it’s life while Eva figures something out, “Please, please come home with us,” the doctor extends her arm, the sphere placed just below the dragon’s snout.

They offer the dragon a choice: Die here, or let them try to save it.

a desperate gambit

THE STORM APPROACHES QUICK. Blades of wind scar the remains of the Sky Pillar. The defensive elements the party construes provide little solace. Hurricane gales carve inside, billowing past hair and scales. It is hard to open your eyes let alone speak.

As freya morningstar and Melody Miro tend to the ailing RAYQUAZA, Eva Morales's GALLADE cuts away at the ice. Over and over, PSYCHO BLADES clash against the frigid epoxy.

LYUNE, THE SALAMENCE offers itself in reverence. In sacrifice. The strain that begins illuminated by COBALION'S SWORD.

Suddenly, an enlarged claw of energy crushes through the ceiling. It cleaves stone and ice with ease, exposing everyone to the elements. From the storm, the terrible head of a KYUREM emerges, eyes glowing like dying suns.

Its maw is frozen shut. But it can still roar. And as it directs its body in a violent arc, a GLACIATE begins to manifest.

It is at this precise moment in time, the RAYQUAZA'S EYES OPEN TO THEIR FULLEST and Eva Morales's GALLADE cracks the ice. The RAYQUAZA slams its tail against the pillar's floor— and it smashes into pieces of iced jade.

With its tail severed, the warmed RAYQUAZA fires a DRAGON PULSE at the KYUREM, buying everyone time to escape. The RAYQUAZA would follow and fly out clumsily... as the KYUREM recovers. And recover quick, it does.

freya morningstar's SALAMENCE is still alive- but lacks the energy to remain conscious.

what happens in an instant will be burned into her memory as a lifetime. the earth shakes around them; howling wind scores their cheeks red and angry. it's a cold that digs its fingers into her bones. lyune's warmth beside her is her only comfort, until that too disappears. he collapses to his side as the monster converges upon them.

rayquaza writhes, tail slamming, and she nearly loses her footing. violently shaking hands fumble with lyune's pokeball; she hasn't breathed. only when his body is recalled into the ball, that she knows he is alive, does she exhale.

the world returns and she scrambles back. their plight is far from over. every breath is ice in her lungs and she's howling against the wind, "move, move, move!" to urge her companions on.

all three of her salamence outside lash out at the beast with draconic fury, swarming the beast like locusts. she rips two more pokeballs from her necklace, mounting the charizard she calls forth. ori, the other salamence - the smallest of her flock, but by far the fastest, waits for anyone who might need passage.

rayquaza does not stay to make a stand - it cannot. freya looks backward at her companions, at the salamence wincing against the force of the wind, and grits her teeth. she squeezes calcifer's sides and he takes off into the blizzard, after the dragon they've risked everything to save.

Kyurem smashed the ceiling above them, cobalion quickly cutting the stone with it's sacred sword to prevent the roof from collapsing on his allies. "FIRE!" she orders as Smeargle suddenly uses DRAGON ENERGY, a move sketched by the Regidrago, boosting its power slightly by the TAKE HEART it previously used but nowhere near the level of power she originally saw. Primarina unleashes a flurry of cherry blossom petals and power wind against Kyurem as she uses SPRINGTIDE STORM on the monster, hoping it'd do something but she knew it may not. She sends out her Noivern as Rayquaza suddenly comes to life and slams into the monster as well. [break][break]

Move!" she said as they had to go now, he leapt into the air and rushed to seperate slightly from the group "DONT CLUMP TOGETHER, DONT GO TO FAR! FIGHT FROM A DISTANCE" she called out to the group.

They're outclassed. He had already figured that out just from looking at the wasteland left in the wake of their opponent, and he still had underestimated it.

Or perhaps, he had overestimated himself.

"Spread out!" The youth commanded his troupe of Orbeetles as the frost giant shrugged off their attempts at slowing it down. "We must guard the team's escape! Heat crew! Cover Fire!"

With Garo powering down back to a normal Orbeetle, the squad of psychic bugs was swift to make its retreat, joining Rayquaza in its escape, assisting its flight with psychic power.

The Volcarona and Centiskorch blasted walls of fire into the icy dragon's path as the group retreated back, their trainer scrambling back to not leave them behind.

"We gotta get outta this winter hellhole, stat!"

-scrambles back. Garo returned back to normal.
-All Orbeetles are assisting Rayquaza fly with psychic power
-2 Volcaronas and a Centiskorch are blasting fire walls in the dragon's path

There is no time to think, only act. Their ticking time bomb explodes in a flurry of ice and rock, emerging from the frozen maw of a terrifying beast come to deliver death.

Urshifu jumps forward, COUNTERing the shrapnel with lightning-fast punches alongside Melody Miro 's Cobalion. Warbled commands from her companions echo back at Skyler, pushing her closer to the pillar's edge in an attempt to dodge wayward shards of rock and ice.

Well, fuck, her brain unhelpfully provides. Waking up this morning, this is definitely not what she thought she'd be facing.

"No shit!" She responds to John Sullivan 's words, awash in the red glow of a materializing Starmie. The short staccato of her command preludes a field of energy send towards Kyurem, GRAVITY weighting heavy both on the beast and the surrounding structure.

Every moment counts, she knows. Whatever Eva Morales had thought of doing to get them out of here, it better be soon. Now, preferably.

Around her belt, one specific pokeball rages within its confines with tidal defiance, but she doesn't reach for it. Not yet.

Recognizing the danger, Gallade does as it was bid earlier. Skyler recalls Urshifu and scoops up Starmie scant seconds before the Psychic-type approaches. A sharp nod has them Teleporting away from the scene and onto one of freya morningstar 's Salamence.

- whoop, here comes the ICY DEATH
- urshifu COUNTERs the initial shrapnel alongside cobalion
- starmie uses GRAVITY to try and 1) stall kyurem's approach and/or 2) get some of damaged structure to collapse
- skyler thinks about releasing kyogre, but ultimately decides against it
- gallade uses TELEPORT to get them onto one of freya's salamence and gtfo
- time to go, go go

The Kyurem’s scream is deafening. If it’s possible, the temperature drops further as the beast tears through the frozen stone. Haunting yellow eyes peer from above behind a flurry of sleet and snow.

Eva nearly jumpsout of her scream when the dragon behind her shifts. Emerald scales crack and the frozen tail of the beast is left behind, “Holy shit!” she mutters, staggering back but catching herself with a quick step. Draconic energy bursts towards the Kyurem, Rayquaza’s gift to them: time.

Don’t squander it.

“Return!” travel light. The Ponyta, disappears in a flash. The battle has already commenced, the pokemon of the others bombarding the ice dragon with attacks to drive it back.

Eva leaps onto the back of one of the many dragons, letting it carry them away from Kyurem and alongside Rayqauza as they clumsily make their escape. Wind, ice, fear, it’s all numbing. Her partially frozen fingers fiddle with her pockets. Everything is numb to the touch, but the jagged edges of Doug’s primal crystal are distinct.

Salamence are no stranger to Eva, she flies one frequently. She settles on the dragon and steers it towards the others, setting them in a close knit pattern, “Syah, Blade, go!”

As the crystal leaves her fingers, the Machamp bursts into light, growing to incredible size as it MEGA-EVOLVES. To protect their escape, the Gallade extends it’s arms forward, summoning it’s z-power to cast SANCTUARY around the group and their escape . . . hopefully back to their own world.

a desperate gambit

EVERYONE ATTEMPTS TO FLEE THE WINTRY WASTELAND. However, the KYUREM is swift. Not necessarily due to its own speed, but due to its SIZE.

It brings with it, the ever swirling blizzard that tears into the group and their Pokemon with icy shrapnel. Snow and shard, like sophic salt, besmirch their clothes and skin. Ice travels up the limbs in an attempt to ground them to this realm for good.

The RAYQUAZA eventually must halt its flight, for it does not have the energy or the body to do so. As the KYUREM gains on them, the party must carry it.

And when the KYUREM eventually moves in on them, its hulking, draconic body looms above them, desiring to devour. To complete itself.

It has already taken a taste of MOLTRES. A taste of RAYQUAZA and more.

But nothing can fulfill its appetite. Nothing can make it feel FULL.

John Sullivan's PRIMAL SHARD that remains in Eva Morales's pocket, pilfered perfectly at the start of their frigid descent, is pivotal. Although it is broken. Although it is imperfect. Perhaps, it is enough. Something the KYUREM does not understand.

As Eva Morales's MACHAMP MEGA EVOLVES and her GALLADE casts Z-MOVE: SANCTUARY, the KYUREM slams its icy claw against the barrier. For the quietest second, there is little effect...

But the RAYQUAZA stirs. Roars as a dramatic resonance rumbles from its body. Its MIKADO ORGAN drums and as a power emerges from its body to combine with the groups' efforts, the PRIMAL SHARD is activated for the LAST TIME.

A blinding light takes them all.

And teleports them back home.

...

...

The KYUREM rampages in its lonely winter. Roaring, it claws the empty space the group has left. Over and over, it spreads its GLACIATE to scythe what should've been its next meal.

But its persistence is rewarded. A CRACK begins to form, hovering in space...

When everyone returns, they are where they once were. The PRIMAL SHARD crumbles into dust. The MIKADO ORGAN is exhausted of all remnants of PRIMAL ENERGY too. As they ponder their next move, RAYQUAZA'S TAIL SHOWS THE SLIGHTEST SIGNS OF REGENERATING... as lizards do.

We are ALIVE?!

"CUT ME A BREAK!" Snapped the youth back at skyler dross as the group inevitably came together to protect the immobile Rayquaza, fighting for both their lives and the dragon's as their pokemon swarmed the giant frost dragon like flies.

Things were not looking great.

And just when it looked like the Kyurem would just crush them outright-!!!

The attack dispels harmelessly against the barrier, and yet Doug could still feel the whiplash reverberate in his chest. Or was that just his beating heart...?!

And then, Rayquaza's roar thundered across the wasteland.

"...?!" And just like that, light, and then warmth. Far too much warmth, after their time in that wintery hellscape. For a brief moment, Doug simply stood there agape, before his knees gave out under him, the youth falling on his ass besides Rayquaza with a loose jaw.

"Holy Shit." He muttered, gasping for air as his pokemon all hurried to his side, piling atop him worriedly as the youth processed what had just happened.

He had gone into the retrieval mission ready to fight Rayquaza if necessary... but somehow, what had awaited them on the other side had been even worse.

But...

Very slowly, the youth glanced over his shoulder to look at Rayquaza. No matter what anyone said, no matter what they had gone through...!

"Major?" He uttered as he plucked his Volcarona off his chest and moved to press them against Rayquaza, turning his gaze to Eva Morales before slowly giving her a thumbs up and a shaky grin. "Mission accomplished."

She looked around, with panicked eyes. That thing was going to kill them all in one fell swoop. No one was going to survive that massacre. She recalled her pokemon as she felt her black veins spreading as a response to her stress. She had to go, she couldn't let them see it. No, they wouldn't understand. She sent out her gardevoir and without a word, she was gone.

Suddenly, with the help go Rayquaza, the all too familiar vacuum of space and time rips them from their frozen nightmare and back to the Hoenn the know. As always, it’s jarring, but she’s become accustom to the brief vertigo that it leaves when gravity weighs back down on you.

It only takes a moment for the doctor to realize their back. Warmth spreads across her body like a wave. Her fingers tips burn uncomfortably but the sight of a undulating emerald serpent against a glassy Hoenn sea is far to distracting.

They did it. But surly not without consequences.

As dahlia goode would later say at the next AQUA meeting . . . they would find solution after solution after solution to deal with them.

“Mission accomplished, Captain,” she smiles to John Sullivan before cautiously approaching the Rayquaza. A calculating glance at the wounds brings her a sense of peace. The most subtle hints of regeneration can be seen at the raw tissue margins. It’s a start, but the dragon has a long way to go before it’s back to it’s rambunctious self, “You’re gonna be ok, buddy,” she gently pats the rough scales, already much warmer beneath the sun, “You’re gonna be just fine.”

Eva spares a glance towards freya morningstar, knowing this will be a powerful moment for the woman who not only survived the frozen world and Kyurem twice, but accomplished her goal to save the creature who had saved her. A debt repaid.
