His answers don't surprise her, not exactly. When he mentions family, Elisabeth's thoughts can't help but stray to her own. Not the Fiorellis -- for she was the last of them, and the lineage likely doomed to end with her -- but the family she had wed into: the Bortifortes of Kalos. According to some, she had caused their downfall, too, abruptly ending their ascent into the higher echelons of society with the death of her husband.

"Kalosian nobility puts a great deal of emphasis on family influence," Elisabeth said instead: an acknowledgment of the validity of such a mindset, if not an outright agreement on her part. "What would you do with yours, I wonder?" It was a rhetorical question, and her smile revealed her full awareness of it. Secrets and intrigue alike didn't lend themselves to being shared on a first drink with a stranger.

The spotlight of the conversation shifted to her suddenly, and Elisabeth blinked slowly, resting her chin on her hand as she assessed her answer. Politics seemed an unwise pursuit, in some ways; the more she evaded notice in that arena, the more successful she could anticipate being in the Rocket organization. She already, in many ways, was playing with fire by having a civilian persona that was not clearly indistinguishable from her criminal one.

Still, Elisabeth was a civilian. She had opinions. Aspirations, perhaps, or the hazy outline of them.

"It is difficult to be a person with a modicum of intelligence and not wonder at the structures of power that govern you." A hand settled about the drink on the counter, staring into the liquid for a moment to see a glimpse of her own reflection. "I suppose I don't do well, being under someone else's thumb. There is a part of me that prefers to be the one with a say over my own destiny."

She turned her bright eyes to GABRIEL BLACK, her expression perfectly pleasant despite the solemnity of the topic at hand. "Although I suspect I can trust your judgment in that regard will have Hoenn's best interests in mind."

it was a prickling thought knowing that, despite his best efforts, his family would likely fall from perch he'd settle them on. none of his children had an inkling for politics, or even the slightest care for the family's last name. he swallows the traces of pride that bristle at these thoughts, leaving her rhetorical question to be just that, despite the illusions of a future shattering in his mind.

as his own question makes waves, pushing elisabeth into deeper thought, he wrestles down the bartender with a lazy lift of his hand. as she rounds her speech up, the drinks arrives.

"then you, my dear, are one of the truly unique." the pad of his thumb wears circles into the condensate of the glass, layered fingerprints left in its wake. "many are more than happy enough living in the status quo — nothing wrong with that, i suppose. but, like yourself i imagine, i am not satisfied with mediocrity." he turns towards her, giving her a bearish grin. "if i cannot forge my own path, then i will tear the rest down to their foundations, and start anew."

gabriel reaches for a drink as the best interests of hoenn, and his alignment to them, are drowned in a bitter brown. it does pose an interesting question, however, one he doesn't let die with it.

"and, should my judgement lead to hoenn's fall?"

"Unique?" Elisabeth echoed, lifting her drink to her lips as she considered the validity of his observation; when she lowered it, the faint smear of lipstick marked the rim of the glass.

"You may have a point. Though those who are content being led blindly, I would wager, have never been led somewhere they don't wish to be. Or maybe," she said impishly, lingering on the last word as if tasting it, "they've never had a destination in mind."

Her dazzling smile left further implications unsaid as it met his grin. His question, on the other hand, was more probing. Challenging, almost.

This was a bit of a tightrope act, how to reply in a way that didn't offend nor patronize. It reminded her of intrigue of a different sort: of the cutting tongues of nobility, and the rise and fall of familial empires. The very topic they had briefly skimmed seconds before.

The blonde's emerald eyes met his, having at last resolved an answer. "I find you and I are of similar minds, Mr. Black. I have no issue dismantling structures that fail me, and doing what I must to build them anew. Should Hoenn be on the brink of collapse, whether it be due to you or otherwise, I like to imagine I'd be one of those seeking ways to reconstruct it, rather than see it fall to further disarray. The matter of fault is something that can be addressed later, after the fact."

Her chandelier earrings shifted slightly with the tilt of her head as she regarded him, twinkling in the light. "And you? What would you do, if you found you bet on the stability of white in Hoenn... only to find yourself facing the calamity of a black fate?"

he lets the answer die on his lips. civilization has proven time and time again that, those who would strike out on their own and bring disorder, are not dealt with kindly. not only by the powerful, but those who do not wish to see their stable world collapse.

"hm, an odd question." at it's core, as far as he could see, it was a fundamental argument of the 'league' vs 'rocket'. both were necessary for the region to thrive, as much as it brought conflict to their front door steps. unchallenged, the league could rule hoenn in any way, but then again, so too did that apply to team rocket.

his footsteps are surprisingly light as he makes his way out, his mountainous back disappearing beyond the doors. once inside the car he reaches for his phone, fingers tapping away on a small screen as the car pulls off.
