Of the few people Quincy knew in Hoenn, the Gilbournes were the most influential. Their bloodline traced back to the far-gone days of Hoenn's past, and until recently, they frequently held a seat on the council. Rumor has it that they lost it due to some scandal involving Rocket.[break][break]

Old blood fraternizing with the enemy? Even if false, it's a bad rumor to let float around. Quincy can't blame them for trying to smooth things over with a party.[break][break]

Capitalizing on their screw-up to make connections felt wrong, but only slightly.[break][break]

He moved around the crowded ballroom of the Gilbourne Mansion, champagne glass in one hand, the other in his pocket. They invited everyone they knew from the looks of it. More were arriving by the minute too. The Gilbourne's themselves were strangely absent. [break][break]

Planning some grand entrance, maybe?[break][break]

Arriving at the glass door to the courtyard, Quincy sipped his champagne and admired the pinkish-white flowers that covered the bushes outside. They almost seemed to glow underneath the moonlight.[break][break]

"Must have cost a fortune." he muttered to himself.

All the wealth surrounding Elisabeth Fiorelli here whispered of an era she had long believed over and done for her, one of clicking heels and whirling skirts dancing across marble floors.

Dressed as she was in opulent finery, she was but one living statue among many, maneuvering across the room and mingling among strangers bound only by their desire to impress, flatter, and beguile this gathering of Hoenn's most powerful and influential people.

The Gilbournes didn't know her past life as Countess Bortiforte, not exactly. They knew her as the immaculately presented florist who arranged their mansion in hydrangeas, roses, and amaryllis, each bouquet met to Mrs. Gilbourne's most exacting specifications.

The least they could do after enduring that was to invite her to their little event, no?

The thought amused Elisabeth more than slightly, and she hid her smile behind yet another glass of champagne as she ventured out to the courtyard. Taking a moment to breathe after feigning pleasantries seemed wise. Her stamina for such events had already been sorely tested, after so many months languishing in the lazy delight of her own solitude.

She reclined on a nearby bench, giving her heels a moment to rest as she enjoyed the sight of the budding flora nearby. Only then did she notice the silhouette of someone else come into view, his plans on evading the hustle and bustle of the event mirroring hers.

"Amaryllis," she commented aloud as she watched him study the blossoms intently. "Pink amaryllis, to be exact. Lovely, aren't they?"

Lips lingering on the rim of his glass, Quincy arched a brow as the woman spoke. How odd not to have noticed her sitting in the courtyard sooner. Beautiful women rarely escaped his eye. [break][break]

"Verily." he replied, stepping through the door and into the yard proper. He hovered near the bench, body at an angle, pointing toward her and the rows of amaryllis. [break][break]

"Do you know something of flowers, miss...." Quincy trailed off, waiting with a smile for her name.

She rested her chin on her hand, smiling up at him. "Elisabeth," the blonde said, the Kalosian lilt to her accent unmistakable. "Elisabeth Fiorelli, to be precise. Enchanté."

He'd escaped her eye in the interior of the event as well, despite being one of the more handsome and age-appropriate attendees. Elisabeth took him in slowly, tasteful in her appraisal of his features. What was it about tall, dark-haired men that seemed to pique her interest? You're so predictable, Elisabeth, came an internal sigh, which was dismissed as quickly as it came.

To his comment about her interest in flowers, she let out a breathy laugh. "Something like that, I suppose," Elisabeth conceded. "I'm a florist. Not a profession you expect at a sparkling gathering like this one, I'll grant you."

She leaned back on the bench, all languid grace as she said, "I'm afraid you have me on the backfoot, for you have my name and profession, while I know nothing of yours. That's hardly sporting, don't you think?" A dazzling gleam entered her emerald eyes, as if demanding a reply.

"Vous avez un beau nom, Miss Fiorelli." He hadn't spoken Kalosian in two years. A brief time to go without it, yet Quincy can't help but notice the sprinkles of rust in his voice, the words flowing sloppy but passable from his lips. Embarrassing. [break][break]

"Apologizes, that was a bit rough." he sipped his champagne. [break][break]

With the sense of being appraised, Quincy stood straighter (not that he was slouching before) and allowed his suit to do its job, highlighting his broad shoulders and slim waist. The black, pin-stripped suit cost a pretty penny. If it didn't help him look good, he'd be disappointed.[break][break]

"Nonsense." Quincy shook his head, "You find all kinds at fancy parties like this." especially when the hosts were desperate. [break][break]

He took a moment to examine her as she leaned back. Her long, blonde hair framed delicate, pointed features perfectly. The vine-like drapings ling the top of her dress made sense now that Quincy knew her profession. [break][break]

"You're right." he agreed, meeting her eye. "Quincy Cobalt." he extended a hand, "Construction worker."

A genuine sense of amusement sang in her laughter as the stranger hesitantly spoke Kalosian aloud, then promptly appeared embarrassed for doing so. "J'aime votre accent. Unova, n'est-ce pas?" Elisabeth replied, utterly endeared by the awkward attempt at a compliment.

What a harmless man it made him seem, for someone so well-dressed, presumably wealthy, and otherwise imposing. It relaxed Elisabeth somewhat, easing her into the pleasant warmth of casual conversation.

"Construction worker?" she echoed, eyebrows lifting with interest as she took his hand. Her own palms were soft, fragrant with rose perfume. "Well now, Mr. Cobalt, you must tell me what you build. Anything I would recognize?"

Elisabeth tilted her head at him, her loose golden ringlets shifting with the movement as she listened intently.

"It's that obvious?" he put considerable effort into removing that urban tang from his voice. But it was known to slip out, like when butchering another language. [break][break]

"So soft." Quincy noted, shaking her hand. Nothing like his own. His hands were rough. Their softness chiseled away from years of hard labor. The skin forever marred by the scars of callouses repeatedly healed and open. [break][break]

He lifted her hand to his lips, bending down to kiss the back gently. "Anything and everything." he lowered her hand, smiling. "But I specialize in Battle Towers." there's no small amount of pride in his voice. [break][break]

Nodding to the space next to her, "Do you mind?"

"Not terribly, no. It's subtle things, like the trill in the r's," Elisabeth explained with a sly smile. "Unovans struggle with Kalosian more than most, is all. Why? Do you dislike being associated with your home region?"

The gentle fragility of her own hands was deceiving. Elisabeth's many hours toiling in the soil of her gardens, weeding and tending to her plants, were fiercely combated by a daily regimen of lotions and perfumes. The florist's own vanity compelled her to upkeep it for herself, if for no one else.

That was not to say that she disliked the roughness of @quincy's hand, however. There was something sturdy in his grip, something that spoke of someone dependable. When he kissed the back of her hand, something like mischief sparkled in her green eyes.

"Anything and everything is quite a specialty," she murmured, but then the way he said 'Battle Towers' caused her smile to brighten. "Aha. And what is it about Battle Towers that makes you look so pleased with yourself, I wonder?"

At his polite request to join her here, Elisabeth wordlessly made space in answer, her gaze inviting him to make use of it.

Hand flattening his suit to his chest, Quincy sat to her right. He placed his now empty champagne glass on the ground as he did. [break][break]

"The opposite. I'm proud of my home. I learned a lot living in Unova. I wouldn't be the man I am today without those lessons." [break][break]

Those early days working in his father's company shaped him and gave him the strength to pursue his dreams and build his own company from scratch. Quincy grew silent, a far-off look overtaking steel-blue eyes. [break][break]

"Cobalts are steel." wise words from a man long gone echoed. [break][break]

"As for the towers," Quincy cleared his throat, shaking off the distance. "My father took me to one when I was younger. Watching trainer and Pokemon fight, wills clashing against one another, awed me. I've been obsessed every since."

Her own champagne flute was far from empty, and Elisabeth sipped at it leisurely as @quincy spoke, enjoying the mesmerising steel-blue of his eyes.

"Oh? That sounds fascinating. I have never entered a Battle Tower, as it happens. So I'll have to take your word for it, Mr. Cobalt."

There was something pleasurable in listening to a serious man relax, to witnessing him share his passions with all the excitement of someone younger and weighed with less responsibility.

"So why Hoenn, if you have such love for your homeland?" Elisabeth asked, placing her now-depleted glass by her side as she revisited this earlier topic of conversation. A hand brushed her blonde curls away from her bare neck as she turned to look at him, wafting the floral notes of her perfume as she did so: lily-of-the valley and honeysuckle.

"So you're an opportunist," Elisabeth echoed, no small amount of entertainment in the way she tasted this single word. "I suppose you're a man who sets his mind on something and simply goes after it, then?"

Ah, but @quincy had caught onto her typical game. How easy it was to bat the topic back to someone else over and over again, letting them unravel the spool of their own narratives while she kept her own thoughts tidily hidden from sight. Most men didn't even notice it happening, willing and eager as they were to speak of themselves at length.

Unbothered by this little repartee, Elisabeth mirrored his smile as he drew closer.

"We're all good at something. For me, Mr. Cobalt, it's flowers and gardening. I blame my mother for that."
