So, unless FERNANDO SILPH is lying to him, the League knows as little as Rocket does about all this. How disappointing. Unsurprising, expected, but disappointing still. Deep down, Mars had hoped he would learn something of value during this meeting.

Then again, there’s still time. All information can be of value in the right hands, and even if no more than crumbs, there is knowledge to be gained.

He decides to be honest.

”Yes. I did. Even if I had my suspicions that it might be as you say.” Suspicions, not certainty. Mars never assumes anything to be true unless he sees irrefutable proof. ”I imagine you probably want me to justify my actions, so I’ll explain my reasoning.”

That slight smile of his, the one that is so full of the charm that comes with terrible ease, is no longer there, and when looking at the councilman, there’s nothing but cold professionalism.

”Firstly, no warning was issued by the League not to interact with the Unown Report, so with the complete lack of knowledge of it we had at the time and given the way it had been distributed, there was no reason for us civilians to believe there was any harm in doing so.”

There’s still no apparent harm, but they have already discussed that much. He’s not the only person who has interacted with the Unown Report. Many still do so. However, Fernando is already aware of all that.

”Secondly, while I fully trust in the League’s abilities and have provided my support, I don’t make a habit out of sitting around and waiting, nor do I put all my eggs in one basket. I think you, more than anyone, can probably understand that. I have people who rely on me, and given that this Unown Report had been shown to hint at events that may affect the entirety of the region, I had hoped it would give us insight that may lead to preparing contingencies.”

And then comes the third and final reason:

”Lastly, when these “assassins” attacked the guests at the Star Soirée and therefore attacked me, they made this personal, and I’m a man who holds grudges and believes in knowing his enemy.”

That’s it. He does not mention, of course, his insatiable curiosity. His need to know. Nor does he mention the ability he stole. For, while those spoken aren’t his only reasons to be so invested in the Unown Report, they are as true as every other one of Mars’ reasons.

“PERHAPS,” fernando concludes, in some ways sated, in other perturbed. “but i mostly wanted to see your line of thinking.”

he puts on a smile that’s out of obligation rather than contentment.

“you’re not in any trouble,” he reassures after his explanation. “rather, we have reason to believe you may be in danger.”

his head tilts from one side to the other.

“i certainly hope not but your name appearing on the report is ominous enough. perhaps they’re onto you.”

he removes his phone from the table and back into his pocket. his hands replace the phone, cupped within each other as the conversation continues.

“if so, i would hate to think it was because of your gracious contributions to the report.” he pauses. “your valor is admirable and this syndicate is an enemy of us all. however, have you wondered if contributing to this report, this tool that they have place into our hands, is their way of having you do their work for them?”

As he sees it, he has said enough. Questions have been answered, explanations have been given, and ultimately, sharing anything else in regard to his true motivations and goals would only be detrimental to him. He has never underestimated FERNANDO SILPH, not even back when they met during the Hoenn Star Tournament, but he also has never trusted him.

”You might be right.” He agrees with ease, for the assumption that those who created the Unown Report might be using them to finish their work is one he too had made from the very beginning. Free labour. Rather ironic, is it not? ”But if that’s the case, then the painful truth of the matter is that I’m not the only person who has scanned Unown for the Report. Dozens of people have, according to my estimates, and even if I were to stop right here and now, we know others won’t.”

“INDEED,” is the upfront concession but fernando does not default to ‘all-or-nothings’. “however, your contributions have been vast and expeditious. should this prove to be a their intention, you are accelerating progress more than anyone else, or most of its contributors combined.”

he clicks his tongue.

“food for thought,” he mentions, all the well knowing that mars will more than likely not stop. such warnings had did little to deter balder or thomas. and to an extent, even their champion(s).

“their eyes were already on those well prepared for their plans,” he divulges with a certain amount of crypticness. “but i digress, do keep yourself safe, mr. del mar.”

he nods at his suggestion.

“that would be appreciated,” and more importantly, expected.

The sudden revelation is greeted with the slightest of frowns, more a gesture of confusion than one to express any other sort of emotion. So, FERNANDO SILPH does know much more than what he’s willing to say, doesn’t he? Is he perhaps bluffing? For what purpose? What’s his goal? If he is actually telling the truth, who the hell is he talking about?

There’s an obvious answer to that last question.

”I do always intend to stay safe, thank you. I hope you do the same. These are dangerous times, Councilman Silph.”

There’s a slight smile, never failing to be cordial. The danger may be even greater than what the League realises, but it’s not Mars’ responsibility to tell them of what’s to come. Their own officers and Elite Four had been present when the Lake Guardians had given their warnings, after all.

He has no reason not to believe the man before him isn’t already aware of all of that.

And yet, if he were, wouldn’t he have brought it up?

”That would be all, yes?” It’s calmly that he stands, a hand being extended towards the councilman to mark the end of their meeting. ”You know where to find me if there’s anything else you might need from me. It’s always a pleasure to aid our League.”

his caution is met with firm resolve. a final handshake ends their meeting and fernando allows the ceo to leave without consequence. like promised, this was nothing more than a probe. a chance to be proactive before disaster strikes.

any real trouble is store in the recess of his mind. cast dice that reveal their surface against the sum total of his own suspicions. ultimately, it does not meet the check, and mars escapes unscathed. however, doubt takes form. small and insignificant now—no more than a measly bug—but it takes form nonetheless.

and grow it shall.
