The night was starting to fall over Slateport, and a group of teenagers was gathering near a playground meant for smaller children. But with nowhere else to go these adolescent troublemakers gathered wherever possible. And were those gathered Team Rocket stood ready to whisper sweet words into their heads.

Tonight Johanna had been assigned the task, together with a person whom she had yet to see or meet. Though the sun was going down, it was still rather hot. Meaning that she for once wasn’t wearing a hoodie or something similar, rather only concealing her identity beneath a black mouth-covering mask. Besides the mask, she wore a black punk-rock crop-top with some rather generic purple line art upon it, as well as black short shorts and matching shoes. It was truly too hot and humid for anything else in the port city.

She had personally taken a seat on one of the swings on the Playground, as she kept a watchful gaze upon the teenagers which had conquered the Mankey-bar area. Her long twin-braided blue hair almost reached the ground behind her, as she pushed herself back and forth ever so slightly.

Some of the teenagers had taken to resting up against the side-bars, some were sitting atop of the whole thing, but all of them were slowly starting to light cigarettes and pretending to be cool. The task she was about to partake in seemed daunting from here. She hoped that the partner assigned to her tonight would arrive soon otherwise she might have to engage them on her own. She shuddered at the thought and prayed it would not come to that.

Well, this was a familiar site. One with much less rust and sand, but a familiar one, nonetheless. Ruby had spent plenty of her teenage nights in Pyrite's sorry excuses for parks, smoking the occasional pilfered cig and planning petty crimes against whatever poor sap her group had decided to target. At first, she hadn't understood why her superiors had ordered her and another rookie (apparently named Johanna) to come to a playground of all places for recruitment. But when Ruby looked at the teens who had laid claim to the Mankey-bar area and saw herself in them, she finally understood. She'd been in their position once, and look where she was now. It was perfect.

[break][break](And to think she used to sneer at those dumb old videos they'd played at school about how people got lured into crime if they weren't good little boys and girls.)

[break][break]Screw this humid air, though. Ruby was used to heat—she'd grown up under Orre's scorching sun, after all—but she still wasn't used to all this water. It should have been a blessing after the drought-plagued desert, but when it just hung in the air like this, all it did was make her clothes stick to her sweat-sheened skin. That was why she wore short sleeves, shorts, and sneakers, along with fingerless gloves and a black face mask with a grinning-teeth pattern. The less clothing that she had to stick to her, the better.

[break][break]She scanned the rest of the playground and spotted who she assumed was her teammate. Long blue hair tied into twin braids, just like the boss had described. She strode over to the girl, hands in her pockets.

Her attention had been on the teenagers, so when Ruby made herself known, Johanna was caught by surprise. Though she had at least learned not to jump at the surprise, she still looked towards the sound of Ruby’s voice just as if she had been jump-scared by the horror flavor of the month.

Once she had taken a second to calm down. She got off the swing and nodded. “Yep, that’s me.” For a brief moment, she wondered if it would be better if they switched to code names. But then she remembered their objective, and how nicknames might be weaponized against them by their teenage prey.

“I presume you’ll be my partner for the occasion?” She gave a brief wavey gesture towards the flock. They hadn’t noticed them yet or didn’t bother to give them their attention. “Do you have anything specific you want me to call you or?...” She trailed off, considering whether to call it a civilian name or some variation thereof.

Normally, Ruby might crack a grin at seeing someone so obviously startled by her appearance. It meant she was doing a good job of being intimidating. But the person who was supposed to be her partner tonight had reacted that way, and that wasn't exactly the best sign. Her grinning mask hid her frown, but the drop in her expression might have still been noticeable. Hopefully it was just a fluke.

[break][break]"Yep," Ruby replied, her expression relaxing a bit more... which wasn't saying much for someone with a chronic case of resting bitch face, but at least she didn't look disappointed anymore. It took her a moment to realize what Johanna's second question meant. She shrugged. "Just call me Ruby." She preferred to save her codename for more high-stakes missions. (And not because she was embarrassed at how unoriginal it was, dammit.)

[break][break]She glanced over at the teens. "This should be pretty easy. These kids wanna cause trouble? Then we'll give 'em some trouble to cause. So how we doin' this?" She assumed that Johanna was going to be the socialite of the duo. After all, Ruby had never done any recruitment herself before.

Even with the mask, Johanna could feel how the opinion that Ruby held for her dropped considerably. Nonetheless, Johanna was not about to let that stop her. Ruby obliged giving Johanna her actual name. Johanna merely nodded in response, showing she had committed it to memory.

Johanna “Yeah, let’s give them some trouble to cause.” Johanna paused realizing now that she had no idea how they would approach the situation. “Well, I figured we’d just go over there and ask them nicely.” Yeah, she hadn’t really thought it through, or perhaps she had simply never been a part of such a group, even if her clothing suggested otherwise.

“But perhaps you got a better idea?” She looked almost hopeful toward Ruby, since she definitely seemed like she would fit in among such a crowd.

Johanna's echoing of Ruby's statement had the redhead grinning. Maybe she was a bit on the timid side, but Ruby liked this girl's spunk!

[break][break]She barked out a laugh at Johanna's plan to ask them nicely. "Ha! Good one!" But that hopeful look she gave Ruby had Ruby's own expression drop into disbelief. So much for spunk. "Wait, you're serious? That's not gonna work! They'll just laugh in our faces if we do that." She sighed and pinched the covered bridge of her nose. Why had she been paired up with this rookie? (Okay, technically, Ruby was a rookie, too, but this girl was acting like she'd never done a crime in her life. Ruby counted that as seniority.)

[break][break]She thought back to her days in Orre and what had drawn her to a life of petty crime. Team Rocket was definitely bigger than those little street gangs that wished they were the big crime syndicates that dominated the region, but if Ruby was going to do this, she'd have to think like a teenager. Strategizing was far from her specialty, but it looked like she had no choice here.

[break][break]"Like I said, we wanna give 'em trouble to cause. So let's show them we're cool and see just what kind of trouble they wanna cause first. Just follow my lead."

[break][break]She fished through her pockets for her own pack of cigs. She'd told Jade she was going to quit, and she had been cutting back a bit, but she was glad she still carried some with her. Her fingers brushed over the lighter she carried, but she ignored it, instead patting down her pockets like she was looking for something. With an annoyed sigh, she strode over to the group of teens, one cigarette pinches between her fingers.

If only Ruby knew how right she was when she thought Johanna hadn’t done a crime in her life. But alas that was neither here nor there. Still, Johanna noticed the disappointment and annoyance. It was looks she was all too familiar with.

“Sorry… That was kind of how I was recruited…” That probably told Ruby more about Johanna than what she needed or wanted to know. An apologetic smile was sent in Ruby’s direction, as a sense of helplessness washed over Johanna.

And so she allowed Ruby to take the lead. Following timidly behind. She watched as Ruby fished out a cigarette. Alas, Johanna had no such things upon her person, in fact, she had never smoked before. Like a nervous Growlithe did she follow Ruby towards the group of teenagers.

It didn’t take long for the group to spot the much older pair of women as they walked toward them. A few fingers pointed in their direction, then a few comments were whispered in hushed voices among the group followed up by some snickering.

When Ruby announced their presence to the group, asking for a light, the leader of the group looked down upon them from his throne of Mankey-bars. Making no attempt at hiding that he was giving them the elevator look. A young boy no more than seventeen, well-built and with short well-cut hair, and confidence to match his looks. He was clearly the type to spend more time at the gym than in the books, and so were the rest of the group. Clearly, the group consisted of a bunch of teenagers with more brawn than brains.

“Light? Sure we got light. But who is asking?” He blew out a puff of smoke from his own cig.

Ruby had to stop and let Johanna's words sink in for a moment. "Wait... seriously?" Oh, she had to ask more about that later. Johanna had to be exaggerating, right? There was no way a Rocket came up to her and asked her to pretty please join their organized crime syndicate.

[break][break]But right now, she was a woman on a mission. She wished she had her nailbat; holding that thing on her shoulder was always a good way to get attention and make her look rough and tough. She'd just have to make do with what she had, like being completely unfazed by the snickering. She planted her free hand on her hip and met the lord of the metallic jungle's gaze with a firm one of her own.

[break][break]"Name's Ruby," she said. "What about you? King of the Playground?" She wondered if that would be taken as a compliment or an insult. On the one hand, it had "King" in it. On the other hand, it was a pretty childish thing to be king of.

Ruby’s attempts at intimidation didn’t seem to work, in fact, they gave the boy a chuckle. Why would the ‘king of the playground’ have to fear these mice? “Pfft, rather unoriginal, don't you think?" He smirked at Ruby. Though she lacked originality, he did enjoy the display of guts and for that, he would reward her with his name. "My name is Adrian.” He answered confidently, before taking a heave of his cigarette and releasing a puff as he sat upon his throne leisurely. As if her request had been but a barely noticed notion, did he gesture for one of the other boys to hand her the lighter, which he did.

Never once did his gaze stray from Ruby’s, not even to see if his subordinate did as he was told. So sure was he in the obedience of his people—a well-placed faith. “Now, let’s cut the crap. You two didn’t just go over here to ask for a lighter.” His eyes finally moved over to Johanna. While she didn’t avert her gaze it lacked the confidence that Ruby seemed to have in abundance.

“So, what is it you two want?” He didn’t move from his throne, though he bent a bit forward as if finally paying attention to them. His movements didn’t go unnoticed by the rest of the crew, some began to shuffle about. Mainly the few female members, perhaps seeing the two as a threat to their position or perhaps looking for a further their own agenda.

Or he could just laugh at her. That worked, too, sure. A small smirk rose to her mouth, and she shrugged. "What, you want me to call you King of the Mankey instead?" Regardless, it seemed that this Adrian respected her enough to give out his name, so she had that going for her. Apparently, the little taunts were working, just not in the way she'd expected.

[break][break]She lit her cigarette and handed the lighter back to the boy, already taking a drag. Then, she tilted her head up and blew her smoke into the air. "I like your attitude, kid," she said to Adrian. "Me and my friend here are part of a little group against useless goody two-shoes. And we're looking for new members. You guys seem like you like causing a bit of trouble, so we think you'd fit right in. Right?" She nudged Johanna with an elbow. It wasn't meant to be painful, but Ruby wasn't exactly a gentle person most of the time.

[break][break]Already, whispers were floating into the air with the cigarette smoke. Some were curious about what this group was. Some had their own guesses, though others said that was impossible—their leader had died and they'd disbanded, right? But all of them kept looking at Adrian, waiting for his answer.

Johanna felt the nudge from Ruby’s elbow. She straightened up and tried to look intimidating in response. But, she was definitely not as successful as she would have hoped.

Meanwhile, Adrian listened to Ruby’s offer. For a brief moment, he even seemed to consider it. But then a prideful smirk spread his lips. He grabbed the almost finished cigarette from his mouth as he began to speak. “And why should we join this little group of yours?” He gestured towards his merry band. Arrogance radiated from his eyes as he spoke “As you can see I have my own group already, in fact, let me return that offer to you. Join our group instead.”

Johanna halted herself from speaking up here. Luckily realizing that her words would surely agitate rather than help the situation, all she did instead was look to Ruby and hope that she had this under control.

Ruby glanced over at Johanna and had to resist the urge to facepalm at her pathetic display of intimidation. At least she tried...? Actually, Ruby wasn't sure if that made it better or worse.

[break][break]For a moment, Adrian looked like he was considering her offer, but his smug smirk immediately had Ruby on edge. She'd been expecting questions—what kind of idiot just accepted an offer like that without asking at least some?—but she hadn't expected that counteroffer. Ruby had to admit that was ballsy, especially if he'd overheard what his subordinates had said.

[break][break]Johanna looked like she wanted to say something, but she ultimately kept her silence. Ruby honestly wasn't sure if she even had this under control or not. She'd been drawing from her past experiences in Orre and basically bluffing her way through this whole conversation. She was surprised it had been working so far!

[break][break]Ruby chuckled. "When I said 'little,' I didn't mean 'little' like your ragtag bunch here. We've got a whole base with everything you could ever need. Even has a spa, if you're into that kind of thing. And you can make good money if you're willing to get your hands dirty."

Again Adrian pretended to consider the offer. But he had no intention of being controlled by anyone. Besides, he could smell the fear in the air emanating from Johanna. It was clear to him who they worked for, and if these two could get in. There was no way it was a place worthy of his presence.

“Y’know, Ruby you seem cool enough. Wasted over there, though. Can’t say the same for your friend.” Adrian spoke cockily. As he pointed directly at Johanna. He took a heave of his cigarette and blew the smoke into the air for a moment of pause. “So, Ruby, I am going to be nice and let you walk away from here now.”

Adrian turned his attention to Johanna. Retrieving a Pokéball from his pocket and started to play with it intimidatingly. “But you aren’t walking away from here until you’ve handed over your Pokémon.”

Johanna looked scared. It seemed these kids were intent on turning the tables on them. She hadn’t thought they would be ballsy enough to try something like that. But now, they all one by one found their Pokéballs and stood at the ready.

Ruby knew from Adrian's first words that he was going to reject their offer. When he pointed at Johanna, Ruby gave her fellow Rocket a side glare. You couldn't even act tough? she wanted to say. She shifted her weight to her other hip, already preparing a retort to Adrian, but then he pulled out a Poké Ball and addressed Johanna.

[break][break]This time, Ruby fully turned her face to her comrade. She wanted to tell the blue-haired Rocket to stand up for herself, to say something, dammit... but she stopped. For a moment, Johanna was someone else, someone much more important to Ruby. Someone she didn't want to see in Team Rocket no matter what. Yet here she was, clearly afraid now that these punks were on the offense.
