it's unexpected how interested he becomes in the topic once Felix Gallagher explains the goal to him. avatars were never a topic that particularly interested him.

[break][break] but perhaps that was the point.

[break][break] he remembers the days after the hoenn star tournament, when everyone was shaken by the sight of the justice trio appearing before the victors. siobhan burke , among many others, had felt slighted by the opportunity. how had people been supposed to know the kinds of successes that might have been in store for them? jayden, however, had not worried. he knew that his own fate was drawn in a line in the sand for him, somewhere.

[break][break] but ever since he had come back from kanto, things had been different. it was hard to explain — even to people who might have understood him, people like THEO BECKETT who expressed missing the rigidity and excellence of their regime.

[break][break] kanto was familiar but it wasn't home. neither was galar (how long had it been since he visited the region?). and hoenn? hoenn was filled with so many memories - both bad and good - that it was often difficult to make sense of it all.

[break][break] standing in the sunlight, the ex-beast winces as he brings his hand up to the light. caught in his thoughts, it was almost too easy to forget why he had trekked all the way up to mt. pyre to begin with. of course, it was a pleasant walk — one that brought the benefit of exercise, too — but also he wished to collect some additional samples. there were still crystablooms flowering along the earth, and he watches as his pokemon make quick work.

[break][break] his shiny gengar leans down to pluck the flowers from the earth and into the transporting bin, as his dragapult darts through the skies and drops them in front. jayden's gaze drifts to his drifblim, mischievous as always.

"whoa!" following a string of excited peeps, her altaria doubles back to make an unprompted descent. her pokemon is distracted by something, the way she disregards the girl on her back.
[break][break] annalise leans over her altaria and looks down the length of her leg, past her dangling sneaker, to the pokemon picking flowers below them. her chest warms — how cute. a man, perhaps their trainer or a florist, stands nearby, supervising the harvest. so this is what cotton candy is so distracted by? flowers? her altaria is a lady after her own heart, she thinks, putting a hand on her chest.

"heyyy," she announces her presence as she lands some yards away from the harvesting operation. on the ground, she can see much clearer — his pokemon are picking the prettiest flowers, their crystal-like buds reflecting the afternoon sun and gleaming in the inky-black surface of cotton candy's beady eyes. annalise barely has time to slip off her back before the altaria begins to strut closer, curiosity ruffling her feathers. "what kind of flowers are thooose?"

crystal flowers, attracts pokemon — she feels like she'll remember the name if she hears it, the vague memory of reading something like that on a ranger report is buried somewhere beneath the detritus of finals and procrastinated ten-page papers.

a wide shade is cast from the sky above him, and violet eyes lift skyward to see the sight of an altaria descending down. jayden is alarmed for a moment, only to realize that it is a civilian coming to investigate.

[break][break] his head tilts towards her as she cooes at his work.

[break][break] or rather, his gengar's work.

[break][break] "they call them crystalblooms," he says blinking. his gengar scoops a few more of the specimen into the bucket, seemingly unaware of the bubbly blond that has entered their space. "though, i'm afraid not much else is known about them."

[break][break] at least, not to his knowledge. in fact, it seemed that the frequency of them has seemed to dim as of recent — though whether that was a good or bad sign remained to be seen.

[break][break] there is a shadow in the distance, a gloom that is only illuminated by his dragapult using dragon dart to cast the intruder down before it can ruin their activity at hand. a pokeball is drawn their way, to minimize the damage.

annalise watches the gengar fill its stubby arms with flowers and drop them in the container with single-minded purpose. now that she looks around, none of his pokemon seem to pay any mind to the girl (read: her) interrupting their operations. her own altaria has forgotten about her as well, stalking around for unpicked blossoms.

"ah, that's it!" she snaps her fingers as the name strikes a chord in her brain. crystablooms. she had read about it back during her finals, but she can concede the notion that there isn't much else known about them. aside from their appeal to pokemon, but — between her altaria and the activity stirring on the concealed edges of the path, annalise doesn't think she needs to be redundant by saying it out loud.

"are you a —" what is a plant scientist called, again? "— botanist?" it sounds right, she thinks, but her voice lifts with lacking confidence in her choice of words. "or do you just like collecting these?"

perhaps it's the presence of his own pokemon that have kept wild pokemon at bay up until annalise henderson appears, or maybe not. it doesn't last for long, however, because a beldum appears.

[break][break] his gengar is the first to drop it's task first, belching a dark pulse towards the offending pokemon.

[break][break] violet eyes shifts towards her. "no," he says.

[break][break] "actually, i'm quite bad with flowers."

[break][break] it strikes him with a bit of irony — it wasn't all that long ago that he'd had to resort to aqua plants because the darkness of the sub allowed for little else. perhaps his move to sootopolis had given him more than a better appreciation for the sea.

despite being someone who looks like he's striking up quite a lucrative florist business, the man with the container full of flowers admits he's quite bad with them. annalise looks at the bin for a moment, then back up at his face. "oh."

the question swings her way. she's more than happy to make him feel better by talking about her own experience: "i love getting flowers, but i'm really bad at, like, gardening and stuff. like, i bring a plant home and it always dies, even the, um, thrives-off-neglect, desert kind."

"but," her eyes drift from his face, momentarily distracted by her altaria pecking at an orbeetle that has the audacity to try and get to close to a crystabloom she found. the beetle collapses in a heap of buzzing wings. "i'd really like to get into learning about native hoennian species. i'm a ranger so, like, ecology and stuff is really interesting to me!"

"i've never gotten flowers," he says. though he thinks back to the gossifleur he once got as a gift. "well — do pokemon count? i once received a gossifleur." the memory is a fond one — one that brings a brief smile to his face, but it's gone in a heartbeat.

his head tilts in her direction. "have you ever tried an aquagarden? they thrive mostly on their own. it's quite easy." though, also quite expensive. it was only through hours of research that jayden had even realized that it was an option for him and while he no longer relied on such a source now, it was quite optimal for beginners.

[break][break] the ex-beast's gaze drifts briefly towards the sight of a elygem getting too close to the patch of crystablooms. however a quick series of dragon darts ends the would-be assault. he looks away, back towards annalise henderson.

[break][break] "i'm not sure if these are a native hoenn species — in fact, they seem more intrusive than anything." his lips purse together in thought. "i'm quite interested in them too, though. it's why i'm collecting them."

[break][break] he blinks.

[break][break] "do you like being a ranger? pokemon are quite nice to be around."

[break][break] unfortunately, such a thing was a luxury he'd never been able to afford.

do pokemon count? annalise sucks the inside of her cheek between her teeth. she's leaning towards no, but the little smile that brushes his lips as he tells her someone gave him a gossifleur makes her swing toward yes. if it makes him happy, annalise is happy to concede with a nod and a smile of her own. "oh! a gossifleur is a super cute gift!"

"an aquagarden?" she echoes, voice brimming with curiosity. "is that, like, an aquarium full of live plants?"

the man breaks eye contact, acknowledging the activity buzzing around them with his wandering gaze. she lets herself glance towards her altaria during the lapse of conversation. she can't tell if she's playing with or fighting with the lampent that has shown up. they arrive at a ceasefire after cotton candy whips up a tiny hurricane that makes its blue fire flicker. she tosses a poke ball their way before things heat up again.

annalise turns her head back, listening attentively as jayden explains his theory that the crystablooms are an invasive species. she glances at the flowers in the container. wracking her brain, she can't recall these from her childhood. and she supposes there would be no ranger report on it earlier this year if they were just monotonous petalburg flora. [break][break]"hm, yeah, that makes sense." she murmurs contemplatively, then lifts her voice, "if you dooo find out anything about these plants, i hope you'll let me in on it! you seem like a smart guy so i'm sure you'll, like, uncover a few mysteries."

she huffs a breath out her nose, an almost laugh. his next question makes her face light up, a proud smile stretching across her face.

"i love it! it's been really rewarding to, um, advocate for pokemon, especially since a lot of them are getting displaced by, like, urbanization and natural disasters."
[break][break]
"plus, like, with all the shit going on lately, it makes me feel like i'm doing something, y'know? instead of just sitting in my room and waiting for the end, or, like, whatever is coming next." the sunshine in her voice clouds over, weighed down by the heaviness of her words. there's a troubled look in her eyes, there-and-gone as she rushes to the next topic.

"have you ever thought about being a ranger? — not that i'm gonna try and recruit you or anything," annalise pivots to the second part quickly, knowing how annoying it must be to think you're being forced into an elevator pitch. "but if you think pokemon are nice to be around, it's, like, a pretty cool career path. the only downside is that it's pretty physical work."

"similar," he agrees pulling out his phone. sure enough, there are photos of his aquagarden on the sub. in it, she would see a small aquarium stuffed with various plants and berries of which he had grown. "and here are some hydroponic gardens too." with a swipe of his thumb, she would see his latest project of growing some crystablooms in his home, though those held fewer success.

[break][break] he laughs gently. "well. i hope that fate would be so kind. i'm not looking for anything in particular."

[break][break] with the conversation shifted, jayden tilts his head as she speaks of ranger work. he hadn't really intended on seriously asking her — he had spoken about it in the way that co-workers ask how your weekend was. conversations full of empty promises and offers; those were the things jayden was used to when interacting with strangers.

[break][break] it was interesting to see the way annalise henderson spilled her heart open for him.

[break][break] "do you really think it's all over? the end of the world?" he purses his lips. "i feel like — that seems almost too easy."

[break][break] so many things had happened in hoenn in the years that he'd been here. between the slateport night market, the introduction of avatar, the alien megapolean race. it was hard to imagine that a simple meteor strike would end it all.

[break][break] "physical work has never bothered me," he says, before shaking his head. "but no — afraid work and school might make me too busy for it." he glances down at one of his pokemon who has padded over to him, an umbreon who looks up at annalise henderson with pleading eyes, as if looking for a pet. "i do enjoy my own pokemon's presence, though."

[break][break] his gaze is curious as it sets upon the ranger.

[break][break] "if the world is ending... what would you want to do before it did?"

[break][break] jayden had never considered it himself before. he wondered what someone else might think.

[break][break] the sounds of his pokemon gathering flowers and battling wild pokemon seem muted behind him.

annalise leans in to look at the pictures, ooohing at the thick tangle of plants inside his little aquarium. then he swipes to a hydroponic garden of crystablooms, though his yield in this photo doesn't look nearly as promising as his aquagarden. must be why he's out here collecting more. "wow, you really have a green thumb for this stuff!"

the mood sours as she mentions the end of the world. the league plans to warp the meteor into another dimension full of people, hostile or not. either the whole region has blood on its hands by the end of the year, or the plan fails and the region ceases to exist. she hates that there's no neatly-wrapped solution to this.

"mmm, maybe?" maybe it is too easy, like he says. "the league has a plan, but, like, i don't think they've had many, like, impending meteors to practice on. i wonder if something like evacuation is on commissioner goode's mind. y'know, just in case our chance of survival is higher somewhere else."

could other regions take on a tidal wave of refugees? would the meteor have devastating fallout that touches all four corners of the world? it makes her sick to dwell on things like this and the brief interlude to talk about her career is a welcome one.

"yeah, i totally get that," she concedes with a dip of her head. in front of her, she catches a glimpse of his umbreon's big, pleading eyes. holding her hand out to the dark-type, she lets it take the lead on accepting (or rejecting) the offer to scritch the top of its head.

annalise looks back up at the man, chewing on the question. what does she want to do? this is a question she's often avoided.

"i don't know," she begins, reflexively, before finding a thread to latch onto. "i want to try and do as much good as possible before the end. and i guess i'd want to tell all my loved ones that i love them and whatever else is on my mind before i can't tell them anything anymore."
[break][break]
annalise smiles, wistful. "and then i'll go home and be with my family. i haven't seen my parents in a while, but i - i want to be with them at the end."
[break][break]
"what about you?" she's quick to turn the question on him, her throat feeling tight. as if someone at hq can sense the growing discomfort, her xtransceiver pings. "oh shit — i gotta go! but i'll pick your brain next time i see you!"
[break][break]
annalise rushes over to her altaria who is pecking at a duosion that got too close to the crystabloom she's guarding. a few stabs at its gooey body with her beak makes the psychic-type fall into a puddle on the ground. annalise doesn't waste the opportunity, lobbing a poke ball at the duosion before clambering onto cotton candy's back.

"bye! nice meeting you!" she waves at the man, dimly aware that they never exchanged a single name between them, and flies off.
