The tiny little Masquerain was valiant, however with Bug-types there really was the issue of them being… squishy.

However, that didn’t meant to count them out completely! As the screaming flames came pelting at him, full-force, the only reaction to this was to lash out with the one move that he knew that could dampen the damage somewhat—

Thanks to the puddles that had formed on the muddy ground after the Drizzle had petered out, the Masquerain then used Water Sport to reduce the effectivity of Fire-type moves. While the Heat Wave would score a direct hit, the moisture build-up on his wings would allow him to weather through the pain—for now.

For now.

“Strong attacks don’t always necessarily mean a direct hit!” he called out from his side of the field as the Masquerain rose up again, ready to bring down tiny-sized hell on the next approach.

Masquerain takes the Heat Wave hit, however moves to mitigate damage via Water Sport!

Alexei Ivanov has genuinely good advice, but aaron is the type to beat his head against the wall until it gives way or he does. it worked against CIAN MAHER, so why wouldn't it work here?

even as the masquerain covers his body with water sport, aaron still can't see a reason not to spam the same move over and over. it's less effective, but it's not not effective.[break][break]

his xatu is the least expressive pokemon on his team, but she radiates an exasperated type of vibe in the breadth between the order being called and the searing heat hissing off the beat of her wings.

Realizing that the Xatu was going to be dying on the hill that it was on, the Masquerain knew there was only one choice remaining: take down the much-larger opponent from a safe distance!

He grit his teeth, because he already knew what was coming next—another loud, screeching, Buzzing noise from the Bug-type would echo out all around them.

I hate that noise! he thought as he closed his eyes against the irritating noise the small, fast and definitely furious wings were creating as the Masquerain dodged out of range from the flames—yet it was only a matter of time.

"fuck!" he grits his teeth against the grating sound of another bug buzz, hands pressed over his ears to try and muffle the sound. it doesn't do much, but it does far more for him than nothing, at least. his xatu, handless, can do nothing except brace herself against the cacophony.

her flaps grow weaker until she's forced to lower herself to the ground with a graceless stumble. before her trainer can demand another heat wave, her wide, unblinking eyes flash as she musters an attack of her own. invisible, psychic forces reach out around the masquerain. motionless from the arena floor, she tries to drive those forces together, like clapping one's hands together to crush a persistently annoying bug.

By now the Xatu had been forced to land—however there was a break in the stream of flames. Instead of another expected burst of heat, the Masquerain looked around, wondering what the Xatu was up to.

He never saw what was coming next—only a barely discernible shimmer of the air gave away that there was a Psychic attack headed the Masquerain’s way.

The loud shrieking was the sign that there was something attacking, and just like a swatted bug, the small dual-type fell to the ground before a red beam of light recalled the passed-out Pokémon.

“I never thought you were going to switch moves from Heat Wave, you know,” he began as he picked his way across the arena, making sure not to step into any of the puddles caused by the surprise downpour earlier. “Surprised me you swapped at the last second,” he added with a short laugh.

As he continued to approach the other, he’d already reached into a pocket of his jacket, and already palmed something small and cold. Once he was close enough, he would gesture for Aaron to hold out his hand.

“Switching things up every now and then actually works, you know. What if other Gym Leaders who you challenge catch you with your ‘stick to one’ move and counter it with Disable, for example? What would you do, then?” he asked the other quietly.

“That’s why it’s important to branch out into more moves, catch them off-guard when they least expect it.”

He then placed the small, cold metal object in the other man’s hand.
