Shoal Cave, north of Mossdeep, was one of the few areas in Eastern Hoenn that was reachable without a Water-type Pokémon, provided one could reach Mossdeep by other means. It was a unique place in Hoenn, as well: it was the only locale where Ice-type Pokémon were abundant. Stepping foot into the water-logged entry, she shivered at the dramatic drop in temperature from outside. It wasn't any colder than any other ice cave, but being used to tropical weather so long made the adjustment more harsh than it normally was.

The girl reached for Kiara's Poké Ball, releasing the lion cub to help keep her warm. Once they stepped onto a patch of ice leading to the cave's main tunnel, latent heat from the Litleo's body started to melt the ice beneath them. Shalin let out a scream as the ice cracked beneath her! A single strap on her backpack was the only thing keeping her in place, but the ice was melting quickly! Her belt had come undone as well, hanging from the opposite side of the gaping hole her weight created in the ice. She cried for Kiara to try to retrieve her belt, so she could at least get one of her flying Pokémon to catch her before she tumbled Arceus knows how far.

Kiara was able to retrieve Shalin's belt, though it was a long reach due to how far down the chasm she was hanging. When she reached for Flit's Poké Ball, the single strap she was hanging from gave way, never designed to hold that kind of weight. She tumbled down a slippery, cold slope that was somehow dimly lit the entire way down. Light had to be filtering in from somewhere.

The natural ice slide dumped her in a chilly yet spacious ice cave. Gleaming across the cave was an Alolan Ninetales. This was a Pokémon she had desperately wanted since their discovery on the remote islands. Unfortunately for her, all of her Poké Balls were hanging hundreds of feet above her, out of reach and out of sight. The majestic, blue fox did not appear to take kindly to the distressed explorer invading her territory, watching her intently with one eye and the only tunnel leading out of the chamber with the other. Was this the end?

Shoal Cave was a breath of fresh air for him. The deep expanse of the ice cold cave provided solace from the scorching hot temperature of the rest of Hoenn. Briefly, he wondered is the region was overheating because it was tropical or simply because a giant meteor was on its way to end them. Regardless, he simply had to have trust that the League would take care of it. If not, the end would be instantaneous anyway. [break][break]

Maybe a couple of super rich trainers with space suits would survive. Whatever. The only think he could really do was stay productive. That's how he earned his living, and how he kept his mind off dark and gloomy topics. He as here on research. Reginoal pokemon were regional for a reason, but somehow they'd started spreading outside of their natural ecosystems. While, not unnatural due to trainers and the capture and sale of rare pokemon, it's kind of funny how they're settling around Hoenn. Especially since they weren't exactly native. Were they fitting in? Or was an influx of alolan sandshrew and ninetails messing with the ecosystem? [break][break]

To check, he'd planned on gradually visiting such places he could find a concentration of foreign pokemon, the easiest being Shoal cave. Carefully, the man followed well tred paths deeper and farther into the cave, occasionally stopping to pick of a seashell or some salt rocks. He eventually made it deeper down, eyes adjusting to the light as he spotted a white blue Ninetails. He approached slowly, moving better than to storm its sanctum as he thought of a way to either befriend it or tag it. He had meant to pull out a couple of snacks to offer its brood of Vulpix when a scream broke through the stillness of the cave, pulling a yelp from even Viorel. Not long, there's a dramatic fall, a tumble, and then a young woman propped on the ground almost right in front of the Ninetails. Oh...how unfortunate. It seemed he wouldn't be able to tag any of the pokemon here today. Shame. [break][break]

"Are you alright?" he asked, catching the Ninetails' ire as well, though he didn't look back at the pokemon, uninterested in her wrath. He tapped a pokemon letting loose a giant red and purple centipede pokemon. "Trindle, please keep her busy." he asked as the Scolipede stopped nuzzling her trainer and locked eyes with the Ninetails before moving forward. Viorel for his part moved to go help Shalin

What a relief! Another explorer, and with a Scolipede at that, happened to be exploring the part of the cave she fell down to. Perhaps this wouldn't be the end for her, after all! "Not really!" Physically, she was only shaken up from the short fall and long slide down. Mentally, though, she was terrified of the Alolan Ninetales that looked like it was about to point its gleaming tails at her and aim a numbing wave of cold air in her direction!

Shalin heard the sound of a Litleo roaring from above her. "That you, Kiara?!" she shouted. While she couldn't see above her due to how thick the ice was, she couldn't have been too far away. She just had to distract the Ninetales long enough to escape without it being able to chase her. The fairy-type arctic fox made her think of Caprice, her Kantonian Ninetales, who was still pending at customs. That Ninetales was one of her favorite mount Pokémon for short distances, She knew there was no way she would outrun this Ninetales; she had to distract it, then get up the tunnel it was guarding and hide.

Without a Pokémon to defend her, she would have to improvise. Her paring knife was one of the few things she always kept on her when out in the wild. She needed it to prepare fresh meat in the event she was stranded for longer than her prepared food supply would last. It was never designed to be a weapon, but it would have to do. She clutched it in her right hand and stared down the fairy-type, who reared up high and charged at her alongside a volley of Ice Shards toward the Scolipede and the two trainers invading its space.

The resourceful girl was able to slide out of the way of the Ninetales itself, though the Ice Shards surrounding it sliced through her jacket and grazed her arms, leaving some cuts that would need to be treated when they were in relative safety again. When she rose to her feet, Shalin noticed the Ninetales' Ice Shard had so much force behind it that the wild ice-type was reeling from the impact!

She took the opportunity to serve as the ultimate distraction for viorel whitmore to fight back; the reckless explorer put her hands on the writing Ninetales' shoulders and pulled herself onto its back, riding the wild Pokémon against its will! As their foe finally succeeded in dislodging itself from the frigid wall, the makeshift cowgirl braced herself by burying her hands in the ice-type's fur and holding on with everything she had!

"Hey-" he began loudly, as Trindle moved to intercept the Ninetails only for it to rush after the fallen explorer. "You don't need to bait it-! Trindle is more than capable to defend us-" he said though it didn't seem the other girl was listening. The Scolipede instead was speeding towards the wild beast, trying awkwardly to find an opening to attack it without hitting Shalin. [break][break]

She blasted a TOXIC at it, poisoning the wild pokemon before chasing down Shalin and attempting to cut in between her and the rampaging Ninetails. Viorel frowned, backing away further before releasing his a Sizzlepede that immediately wrapped itself around his neck like a scarf. "Thank you, the temperature is dropping." Suddenly AURORA BEAM blasted out haphazardly, more intent on stopping Shalin the intruder, than Trindle the interloper.

The Alolan Ninetales' sharp claws cut cleanly over the ice's surface, testing the finesse behind Shalin's grip as the Ninetales bucked and writhed. While Ninetales did not have a lot of strength, they were masters of finesse. The rider let out a cry as though she was at a carnival, having the time of her life trying to stay balanced on the wintry fox.

After a few more seconds of flailing its rider about, the wild had to catch her breath. Shalin wouldn't let this breather go unpunished, stabbing the ice-type repeatedly with her paring knife that was just sharp enough to cut into her mount's soft fur. She couldn't get too many swipes in before their foe sounded a high-pitched shriek.

Expressing blind anger toward both Shalin for not dismounting and Trindle for her TOXIC spray, the Ninetales reared sharply, a sign for Shalin to grab as much fur as she could with both hands. The fairy-type reared suddenly, then jumped from its back legs to its front legs and kicked harshly, flexing its back right where its unwanted rider was sitting. Shalin hissed and squinted; that was one painful thrash! Ninetales were not known for their strength, but they were so flexible that they could focus that strength into almost any point on their bodies.

Desperate to fling Shalin off, the Alolan Ninetales started running around the snall arena in circles, firing ICE SHARDs while making wild turns. Her goal was to buy as much time as possible for the Scolipede's TOXIC to take effect, but this wild may have been better at dislodging unwanted riders than Shalin was at staying balanced on unwilling mounts. A second powerful flick of the Ninetales' back was more than enough to dislodge her and send her hurtling toward a wall of ice.

The battle is rough, Vioprel stayed hidden watching as Shalin tried to stay on the Ninetails. They really should be running. Trindle would be able to outrun the menace, but not if they kept antagonizing the ice fox. "Trindle!" he shouted as the Scolipede used MEGAHORN to shove aside the fox as she sped towards Shalin to help her up and drag her out of the way as an enraged AURORA BEAM slammed into the wall where the poor trainer had just been seconds ago. [break][break]

As TOXIC crippled the fox, Trindle tried to drag Shalin behind cover. This was a waiting game, they just had to keep away the rabid pokemon. Viorel peeked out his head as the Ninetails stalked towards the pair before frantically picking up a rock. He could see her pups, small Vulpixes in the corner hiding from the danger. He feels bad, but he knows he can't let Tringle and Shalin get mauled. [break][break]

Wit has flick of his wrist he launches a small rock towards the pups. It hits the wall but its enough to make the Vulpix flinch and cry. The Ninetail sees him drop down to pick up another rock before launching it at the pups again. This time, one hits and it cries out weakly. That does it for him. His target is screeching in fury, changing courses and running towards Viorel. He's running, slipping and sliding towards a large stalagmite as the fox send out deadly ICE SHARDS at his feet.

Shalin was having the time of her life until the Ninetales flung her off and into a sheet of ice. Her light frame impacted the wall with so much force that she heard a cracking noise followed by a sound akin to glass shattering. The Ninetales' Shalin-missile had caused the ice wall to collapse, revealing a hidden alcove where the broken shards of ice collected, one piercing Shalin's left shoulder as she collapsed in a mess from the impact.

The explorer loved struggling against wild Pokémon like that, whooping at the top of every fierce buck, swerve, and maneuver meant to wrench her off. Outside Hoenn, she had garnered fame for capturing certain wild Pokémon by riding them to exhaustion. Literally. The difference between this time and any other time she had ridden wild was she didn't have her Pokémon to save her when things escalated beyond her control.

She was in no condition to get back in the saddle, either; she wasn't quite sure exactly what she had broken, but she felt a particularly sharp pain in her right side. She felt useless...like she was at the end of her rope in this battle. It was a valuable lesson to her just how reliant she was on her Pokémon. She had done her job, and that was to buy as much time as possible for the poison to kick in. It was up to Vio to wear the weakened Ninetales out to the point of exhaustion. Shalin simply took cover behind what little of the ice wall existed, self-preservation kicking in.

Trindle, while a little annoyed, for the most part is alright with this situation, moving to cover for Shalin and assist her towards the exit. She is well aware of her poison coursing through the Ninetails' veins. Viorel could do this much. [break][break]

While not the most athletic, Viorel spent enough time in the wild running away form danger to at least be able to do this last bit. As the fox pokemon shrieked and scrambled after him, Vio is taking cover, popping up every time there's a pause in the AURORA BEAMs to sprint away. At some point he's simply throwing himself on the ice to slip and slide his way to cover. [break][break]

Eventually the dual type begins huffing and puffing. Panting as she chased him. Swerving side to side as if dizzy. Vio picks up another rock, as if to throw it. The mother moves to cover for her pups ,ready to take the little rock. The scientist meanwhile puffs up his chest before backing away slowly towards Shalin and Trindle's cooing. The Ninetails, sensing herself on the verge flees, picking up her pups as best she can and sending them away, all the while glaring at the humans that had invaded her domain. [break][break]

Once she's gone he let out a long sigh and turned to Shalin. "Hey there, are you alright?"

Wincing, Shalin managed to get to a sitting position well after the Ninetales and its family had vacated the ice arena. After bracing herself against the newly uncovered alcove's wall, she started to feel a bit better, having relieved pressure from whatever it was she had agitated. "Not really. Name's Shalin," she finally had the chance to introduce herself after the confusion of battle. "I'm the wildest Pokémon rider this side of Hoenn, but you may have known already," she weakly smiled.

The bruised girl slowly got to her feet, gritting her teeth as her side was starting to flare in pain once more. The sound of ice shattering followed by a thud drew her attention back to the ice arena. Near it center was the bag Shalin had lost! As she walked toward her properly and leaned down to reach for its strap, a hiss came from beyond her lips. "Does your Scolipede have the energy to at least get us both out of here?" she weakly asked. "I think I need to see someone at Mossdeep immediate care."
