In a way, Eva can relate to Illeana. She has found herself frustrated on more than one occasion for the same reasons. She’s gotten beat up a few too many times for her liking. They could have easily killed her and she’s luckily to be alive after those encounters.

In an unexpected turn of events, Eva smiles, laughs lightly even. She throws her head back as her weight shifts to lean into the back of her chair. The mug of whiskey rests between her hands on her lap beneath the desk.

“I don’t mean to laugh, Illeana, but you contradict yourself. You say you want to protect others, but you’re willing to harm those same people on your ascent?” Just her gaze shifts down to look at the woman across from her, “You’re either lying or you’re stupid. And I know you’re not stupid.”

and for the most part, she is contradicting herself.

the incessant need to protect herself, to protect others... it brings with it a sense of desperation that could very well get the people she cares about injured or worse.

and yet, she doesn't stop pursuing the path.

it makes her no different from the very people who made her feel weak, powerless, worthless.

she despises it.

"i would prefer to not hurt anyone."

a polite way of saying as long as they stay out of her way, perhaps.

"i don't believe i could still possess healing capabilities if my sole intent was to hurt those around me."

tapu lele's parting gift, while given from a cruel and whimsical god, is never taken for granted. she uses it for good, regardless of her own blind ambition.

eventually, she heaves out a sigh. her arms fold over her body. somehow, it looks more like she's trying to comfort herself than go on the defensive.

"i can't keep being the weakest link, eva."

the lamb for slaughter, the pawn, the means to an end.

"regardless of the rocket situation," she pauses, eyes staring at eva. they look distant, faraway, trapped in a paranoid memory. "sea hoenn was the last straw. being cut open by myself like a damn animal could have been prevented if i was just..."

stronger. better. someone other than herself.

Eva’s head snapes back down as her emerald eyes fix on Illeana. The furrows brows that shade them give her a rather unpleasant look. It’s not one many will be used to. It’s serious, frustrated, and angry.

“If you were what, Illeana?” she doesn’t give her much time to respond because she wasn’t meant to, “A monster like them? You can be strong and not be a monster,” the volume of her voice has raised slightly, a product of the growing disappointment.

“Just because you can heal those you hurt, doesn’t make it right. Being able to ‘heal’ doesn’t make you a good person,” if Eva knew more about Tapu Lele, she’d go on to make the point that the legendary didn’t always have good intentions as well.

[break][break]

Eva stands, reaching for the bottle to put it away, signaling the end of their meeting, “I’m exhausted with this conversation, Illeana. You should do some self-reflection and when you’re ready to talk again, you know where to find me,” and if she never knocked on Eva’s door again, Eva could infer Illeana’s decision. She hasn’t given up on her friend, though, not yet.

"better."

her tone is frigid like the atmosphere of snowpoint city. frozen, chilled, icy.

"if i'm a monster," she pauses, rising from her seat. her chin rises in defiance, barely concealing a festering wound eva digs claws into. "then so be it."

thoughts swirl, plaguing the mind until all she sees is a path with no redemption.

fine...

"i've done enough in rocket's cells, eva," she retorts. there's no warmth, no friendship... only a distance that continues to grow between her and those close. the foundation in each built bridge has been cracking for, perhaps, too long before she noticed.

and it's too late for her, now.

she's dug the grave. she'll lay in it, die in it.

the scientist leaves without another word, the scar from her sea hoennian counterpart winking at eva on her way out.
