Callan had just placed down his bag, having arrived about two to three minutes earlier than Elinor. He had not spoken much to her since the Darkest Day, and to be very honest, part of him was afraid to do so. That was a changing experience, something that motivated him, and when he cae out the other end, he wasn't entirely the same person.

Scope, that was the difference. The things he had felt before, outside of his daughter, felt infinitesimal.

But today wasn't a catch up or a date, he was here as a Gym Leader, whatever discussions could wait until afterwards. Nevertheless, as she entered the sliding doors, Callan's pupils dilated, if slightly, as he began to speak. "Hi Elly." A smile formed on his lips, "Congrats on making Council, dear."

Callan slowly walked over to his side of the field, unclipping the three Pokemon he was using for this challenge. "I'll be using these three for our challenge." As he spoke, the screens above their head against the walls showed the exact Pokemon used for challenger and gym leader of the match.

"The educational objective for this gym is to ensure that a trainer is able to be effective in a high-stress situation." Callan began, "The match will end either if I believe you have met the educational objective or all Pokemon either on the challenger or the gym leader's side faint. The assessment will be held then." Callan paused, observing Elly. Come to think of it, this was the first time they've ever battled, he was looking forward to it.

Callan unclipped a Pokeball from his belt, tossing it out to reveal the first Pokemon he would use for the battle.



"When you are ready, we may begin. Unless you have any other questions, show me how you handle your Pokemon."

When Callan entered, she felt the butterflies stirring in her stomach, fluttering about wildly. But she quieted them. She was here to challenge Callan, not romance him, that could wait. “Hi, Cal.” She sent him a warm smile. “Thank you! And congratulations on becoming a Gym Leader!” She spoke enthusiastically, even if she did try to keep herself somewhat professional.

With pleasantries out of their way. Callan began to fulfill his role as the Gym Leader here. She listened and watched. She took a moment to consider her choice of Pokémon. Given the ones she could see on his screen, the same applied to him. The choice was rather easy. Perhaps a bit too easy, though she would make it nonetheless.

Hands gently grabbed one of the Pokéballs from her trainer belt. She threw it casually into the air as it popped open revealing Mienshao. It quickly caught the Pokéball as the red and white ball fell, and handed it to its trainer.

“Thank you, Mien,” Elinor stated

The Mienshao respectfully nodded its head before turning its attention to Callan and his Pokémon. It did a few warming-up movements before announcing that it was ready with a happy yip. “Mien, I will provide support if needed, but besides that, the show is all yours,” Elinor informed. The Mienshao nodded and walked onto the field.

Mienshao would take the initiative. A blue ball of energy formed quickly in between its paws. Though it wouldn’t stay there for long, as the Mienshao sent the AURA SPHERE flying with a fluid throw towards the Obstagoon.

Callan knew he shouldn't have his emotions affect the outcome of the battle, but part of him would be lying to say he didn't want to battle here. He had to remind himself this was an assessment as much as it was a battle, and was underway already.

The Aura Sphere from Mien fired forwards, the bullet of pure fighting energy flew fast and true, a powerful same type attack bonus move that was quadruple effective against an Obstagoon. It was a good starting move, at a safe distance at a poemon that was typically used to close quarters combat.

Despite this, the Obstagoon did not move. An insidious aura rippled around it as it took the Aura Sphere head on, an explosion of energy as the bullet struck, to seemingly no effect.

Instead, the Obstagoon's eyes glowed red with a NASTY PLOT, having charged itself up by the time the Aura Sphere struck, it retaliated at nearly the same time the Aura Sphere struck, firing forth a wave of psychic energy, EXTRASENSORY forward at Elly's Mienshao.

NOTES:
+ OBSTAGOON (?) is unaffected by the AURA SPHERE and uses NASTY PLOT instead of dodging or defending.
+ OBSTAGOON (?) uses EXTRASENSORY on MIENSHAO

The Mienshao watched carefully. But when the attack struck true but seemingly did nothing. Both Mienshao and Elinor reacted with surprise. One might’ve thought they were looking at a mirror if they took the time to look at both trainer and Pokémon.

Surprised as she was. The Mienshao barely had the time to react to the EXTRASENSORY. It felt the heavy force of the Psychic energies slamming straight into it. Brought to its knees for a moment. For a moment the idea of giving up right then and there reared its ugly head in her mind. But like its trainer, it was too stubborn to just lie down like that.

But what could it do? Obstagoon was clearly not affected by its fighting-type attacks. Mienshao shook its head. There had to be some trick to it. Staying at this range was, however, not an option anymore. A shimmering white coated its body as it charged forward the QUICK ATTACK used to Zig-Zag charge at the Obstagoon, though at the last second before any potential impact, the shimmering white aura turned fiery Orange as Mienshao tried to punch the Obstagoon with the power of REVERSAL.

Like Mienshao Elinor was trying to figure out what was going on. It had to be obvious, maybe too obvious. Not because it was supposed to be easy, but because if it was that obvious an experienced trainer might not even consider it an option. And to be fair she had fallen into that trap already.

She watched as the Obstagoon didn’t flinch or even try to dodge. And when the REVERSAL hit it simply flew backward landing completely unfazed.

Mienshao was getting visibly frustrated. She couldn’t put a paw on it, but something about it seemed off, perhaps even lacking. But she wasn’t given time to think. Now aware that the Obstagoon was capable of psychic attacks, the Mienshao found it a bit easier to dodge it. Luckily in doing so it avoided getting knocked out.

“Oh, I get it now,” Elinor said, a smirk on her lips. Her eyes had glanced toward the display that the Gym used to show off each trainer’s Pokémon. She had noticed Callan’s roster, perhaps she should’ve been quicker to notice it. “Mien, U-Turn!”

Uncertainty vanished from the Mienshao as her trainer took command. Quickly it rushed towards the Obstagoon coating its feet in lime-green energy before trying to kick harshly at the Obstagoon. If successful the Mienshao would become enveloped in the red light of a Pokéball, quickly returning to its Pokéball to make space for a Lurantis.

Callan’s compliment gave rise to a short burst of blushing, but she quickly composed herself. This was no time to let emotions affect her. She kept her eyes on the match now, focused. She could not afford to be lax when Callan was her opponent.

Mienshao felt the hit connect, and saw the illusion crumble before it made its escape. Exchanging positions with Lurantis whom. Stretched in anticipation as it appeared. Its eyes then met with Obstagoon the opponent.

Obstagoon was the first to begin the battle. This time employing intimidation tactics. Its SCARY FACE made her knees weak, luckily her bladed arms weren’t spaghetti. Lurantis went straightened its bladed arms into the air, as its body began to glow a vibrant yellowish shade. But Lurantis did not move. Perhaps it was inviting Obstagoon to join it in close quarters or perhaps she was simply charging an attack, only she would know?

Perhaps she had played it too safe. She knew Lurantis tended to do that. Elinor tended to switch between the two either going hard or not going at all. It was a bit of a weakness of hers, and it seemed it didn’t pay off this time.

Elinor sent Callan a teasing smile, she was not partial to sharing information during this contest, nor did it seem like Callan wished to let the Obstagoon meet her upon the fields of battle.

The Obstagoon returned to its Pokéball sending some parting words of discouragement at Lurantis before it switched out with The Cinderace. She felt an inclination to comment open the usage of a Pure fire type in a Normal-type Gym, but she figured what documents he had signed specified it as primarily rather than only since the other two Pokémon had been of the normal type if only secondarily so.

Now, she had some options, switching to another Pokémon while possible seemed like a band-aid solution. And she hadn’t done much of any damage so she could just go on the offensive. Or perhaps that was exactly what she had to do, fight to her outs and not to a lessened loss.

While she was pondering her options the Cinderace valiantly jumped into the air. Lurantis had finished gathering the energies it needed. It swung what was now a giant sword of grass at the jumped-up Cinderace.

Elinor didn’t look surprised when the Cinderace seemed disinclined to dodge. She’d figured it out. Certain abilities allowed for type changes, perhaps this was why the Cinderace was here because it could potentially be a Normal type. “Luran, dodge!” Elinor commanded. Just in time for the Lurantis to let go of the blade mid-swing, allowing the blade to continue on its path, while Lurantis stepped out of the path of the STAB-Empowered ACROBATICS. Though stepping out of the way was probably mildly said, for the Lurantis literarily had to jump away just to be sure to not be graced by it.

“Am I right in assuming that your Cinderace is a Flying-type right now?” Elinor asked though she expected no reply, for she had given none when Callan asked.

Indeed, knowing its type did her no good. But it did mean that she had to be mindful of what moves this Cinderace knew.

"That is indeed a very good question." Elinor sighed, perhaps a bit too theatrically. I suppose there is no other choice. She thought as she watched the pebble turning into a blazing ball of fire. Lurantis wasn’t going to like it but. She retrieved it back into its Pokéball and sent forth Kaleo the Kommo-o.

The Lime-green and pink Dragon/Fighting type emerged just as the Pyro Ball was sent flying towards what had previously been the location of Lurantis. Now the Kommo-o occupied the space, and alas he had little time to set up a defensive barrier.

The Kommo-o raises its arms in defense of its face. The PYRO BALL hit him straight on, bathing him in the warmth of the fire. But did him no harm for his body was sturdy, some might even say his body was born BULLETPROOF.

Once the fire had dissipated, there was only one thing to do. It looked in the direction of Cinderace and smirked confidently. A low-key taunting growl escaped its reptile mouth. And then it charged at the Cinderace with its powerful legs. A sickly green energy covered its fists as it prepared to punch the Cinderace with a good ol' DRAIN PUNCH.
