It was mid-morning when Caleb arrived at the Iron Lady Forge, the cawing of hungry Wingull a familiar cacophony as they hunted Wishiwashi in the nearby bay. At his side, Comet stalked quietly, the clever Lucario a helpful companion when it came to investigating potential Rocket leads (he seemed to have an eye for the untrustworthy).

The building was utilitarian in nature rather than overly flashy; if this were a Rocket front of some kind, it was doing its best to remain somewhat nondescript, which could be a sign that it held secrets within. But sometimes it's the flashier places that are the most corrupt, the gaudiness meant as a distraction to hide what's really going on inside, Caleb mused, thinking of the Rocket casinos he'd left behind in Kanto. This building was anything but gaudy.

As Caleb entered the shop, he immediately noticed how well-organized everything appeared to be: he could see a few well-built display cases featuring various cutlery, pieces paired together in matching sets or comparable price points. A different case held more practical tools such as garden shears, industrial scissors, and hand-axes. And still another case displayed no metal at all: only wooden handles, the carvings beautiful and intricate. Farther back, he could see an entryway into a back chamber. This, he assumed, must be the actual forge, where one might find the tools of a blacksmith (and apparently also a woodworker) spread out on a large worktable, an anvil, and of course, fire. I'll have to ask for the full tour, he noted, seeing that the door to the workshop was currently closed.

In a corner of the shop, there was a counter with a register, and behind that counter stood a woman. She was solidly built, obviously carrying the strength of a longtime laborer and craftswoman, and yet, there was an undeniable grace to her movements. She had short-cropped bright red hair and, Caleb immediately noticed, an eyepatch over her right eye. Overall, she made for quite the striking figure.

"Aurelie Lefevre?" Caleb asked in a friendly tone, confident that this was the Iron Lady herself. "My name is Caleb Sharpe, private League investigator and officer of the law. I've come to ask you a few questions, but it shouldn't take long. I'm quite curious about this shop of yours." He flashed her a roguish grin.

[attr="class","monlyrics"]Time for some pointed questions
[attr="class","monbody"]Aurelie didn't usually stay in the front room of her workshop, which doubled as a waiting room and store for displaying and selling her merchandise. She usually preferred to work in the forge, losing herself in the ever-fascinating process of constructing blades, working on designs, or simply practicing her craft if she didn't have a particular commission or order to fulfill—all of which she found far more productive and exciting than standing around the front waiting for possible foot traffic to meander through her door.

This morning, however, she found herself sitting at the front desk sorting through a stack of order forms and invoices, with the embattled frown of someone who'd much rather be wielding a hammer instead of a pen. So many spreadsheets, so much addition and subtraction! When came through the front entrance, the red-haired smith leapt to her feet almost with relief, even though salesmanship generally rated nearly as low as accounting on her list of preferred activities.

Before she could say so much as "Hello, how can I help you?", the man forthrightly introduced himself and identified his position and purpose. Aurelie's single visible eye widened in surprise. Her mind still a whirl of accounts payables, earnings, and invoices, all she could think of at first was, I should be paid up on my rent this month! Is this about taxes? What is he investigating?

When he finished his introduction, she took a deep breath and gave a polite smile. "Yes, I'm Aurelie," she confirmed with a nod. "Good to meet you, Mr. Sharpe, and welcome to the Iron Lady Forge. Of course, I'm always happy to help out the League's officers in any way I can."

There was something strikingly familiar about the man, though she couldn't quite put her finger on it. Something about the build, the hair, the eyes... It made Aurelie suddenly glad she didn't have any commissions at the moment for combat knives or other weapons for Rocket members that this man could somehow stumble over. Not that she'd ever had many of those commissions to begin with, but for once she didn't regret that paucity as much as usual.

She resisted the urge to cross her arms and instead simply tilted her head to one side inquisitively. "Is there some trouble with something involving my workshop? It's not about my taxes, is it?" she asked, throwing a gloomy glance at the stack of spreadsheets covered in green, red, and black ink on the front desk behind the counter.

Taxes? Caleb found himself slightly thrown off by this assumption. "Oh, I'm not a tax auditor," he chuckled, amused. "Though it seems you could use an accountant." He followed her gaze over to the stacks of multi-colored spreadsheets, remembering the nightmare of being assigned desk work when he'd first started at his precinct - typing up incident reports all day - and how draining it had been. Doing one's own taxes sounded about as equally hellish.

"I'm far more interested in the work you do here - and who it's typically for - rather than the specifics of your financials. You're the blacksmith responsible for all of this?" He waved a hand idly at the display cases housing various cutlery and utility tool samples. He sauntered over to one of the cases as he finished speaking, Comet trailing dutifully after him, leaning over slightly to peer more closely at a particularly impressive Chef's knife. The blade was a well-forged combination of polished stainless and carbon steel, ending in a beautiful hand-carved full tang wooden hilt.

He turned back to Aurelie, unable to suppress his sincere admiration. "Do you take commissions?" He asked, partly because it was his job to get to the bottom of whether or not this was a Rocket front, and partly because he could really use a new utility knife.

[attr="class","monlyrics"]Time for some pointed questions.
[attr="class","monbody"]Aurelie couldn't help beaming with pride when she saw the genuine look of admiration in 's eyes as he looked over the wares in her shop. Coming around from behind the desk, she moved over to see what he was looking at and nodded knowingly when she saw his Lucario lingering near the san mai chef's knife. The blade featured an undulating, watery ripple differentiating the silvery stainless-steel cladding from the darker high-carbon steel core. She didn't normally carve or decorate her handles, preferring to focus on shaping and contouring them for comfort, but for some reason, she'd decided to continue the watery theme in this particular knife by chiseling a pattern of swirling waves along the red oak handle.

Definitely a pretty piece, she thought. And getting the stainless steel to forge-weld to the high-carbon was not as easy as I thought it'd be.

At his second question, the red-haired smith perked up readily with a craftsman's enthusiasm. "Yes, I do take commissions," Aurelie affirmed. "In fact, that's how I usually prefer to do business. Sometimes, customers come in and buy knives off the shelf, but what I really enjoy is having a client describe their needs and preferences and working with them to design their ideal knife, or knives. I love creating something that's truly custom and one-of-a-kind that fits the client's desires as closely as possible."

She pursed her lips as her mind drifted back to his first question. "And yes, this is my business. However, I would like to specify," she added, chuckling a little at her own solemnity and imitating pedantically pushing a pair of invisible glasses up her nose, "I'm technically not a blacksmith, but a bladesmith. Some would say it's a minor distinction, but I feel it's an important one to make."

Warming to her subject, she spread her hands wide. "You see, a blacksmith works primarily with steel and iron—the so-called 'black' metals. Historically, I think they usually made horseshoes, but they can also create tools, farming implements, utensils, sculptures, light fixtures, all sorts of things. Then you have things like goldsmiths, silversmiths, tinkers, all kinds of metalsmiths. But a bladesmith…" She paused to glance toward the knives on display.

"A bladesmith forges knives, swords, daggers, and other blades," Aurelie continued. "We make the blade, sharpen it, quench it, fit the handle to it, and often make a sheath or lanyard as well. It's not as much variety, but it never gets old either." She shrugged and smiled a little self-deprecatingly. "It's just a little more specialized, that's all."

Putting a finger to her lips, the red-haired smith mused, "As for customers, I've had a boba café owner, a few chefs and cooks, several people wanting camp knives or utility knives, a grooming salon wanting custom shears. Sometimes tourists wander in and buy a piece or two, too. I also offer sharpening services and handle repair or replacement. It's not a lot, but it's enough to get by so far."

She tilted her head up at him, struck again by a nagging sense of familiarity resonating from this man. She'd never heard his name before or run into him, she was sure, yet she felt like she should know him, somehow. It was enough to make her otherwise warm smile fade slightly as she asked, "Does that answer your questions, Mr. Sharpe?"

My, she is impressive, Caleb noted as Aurelie explained the difference between a common blacksmith and her preferred label of bladesmith. It was clear that this woman carried a great deal of pride in her craft, and had been doing this sort of work for many years - perhaps most of her life. As she spoke, Caleb tried to get a sense of whether or not she was lying to him: perhaps not outright, but by omission. When she listed those that made up her recent customer base, he looked for any signs of deception - a twitching at the corner of the mouth or a suddenly averted gaze. Nothing. Everything about her manner of speech was calm and collected, as natural as if she were speaking to a friend and not a private investigator. Perhaps she'll be able to call me a friend, after this, Caleb mused. If she's clean, of course.

"You've certainly answered many of them," He replied, watching as her smile faded ever-so-slightly. She doesn't want to be further questioned, he guessed. That could mean she was hiding something after all, or it could mean she was as frustrated as any business owner might be with an unexpected visit at the start of an already busy day.

Time for a different tactic.

"But say I wanted to commission something...different," Caleb continued, standing upright again, and moving away from the display cases and closer to the woman before him. He lowered his tone somewhat, and glanced at the door, as if checking to make sure nobody else was about to enter. He held out his hands, gesturing slightly as he theorized, taking on a slightly conspiratorial air. "Say I was...someone who needed to protect myself. Or, someone in a dangerous line of work. Say I was looking for a not just any old utility blade - " He met Aurelie's visible eye, scrutinizing every detail of her fine-featured face as he gazed at her. He wondered vaguely what was beneath the eyepatch she wore, and how she had received the injury.

" - But a weapon." Caleb finished quietly. His smile turned wolfish, with just a hint of a predatory glint to his cold blue-grey eyes. "Would you make a weapon for me, Bladesmith?"

[attr="class","monlyrics"]Time for some pointed questions
[attr="class","monbody"]When asked her if she would make a weapon for him and that strange wolfish look filled his eyes, those hauntingly familiar blue eyes, Aurelie felt like she'd abruptly swallowed a block of ice. The chill of shock and dismay spread through her chest as she remembered a darkened room, a groaning man bleeding out on the floor, and prowling toward him like a predatory shadow. Her stomach dropped a little when she recalled how she'd met Zev in the first place: when he'd commissioned her to make a pair of combat knives for him. Weapons.

The two men—the one in her memory, waiting for the man to die, and the one standing before her, waiting for her answer—they had the same eyes. And similar builds and hair, now that she looked closer. Yet, here one was a League officer, and the other was—very much not League-approved. They looked alike enough to be family, and they both definitely seemed very interested in weaponry, although most likely for very different reasons.

If they really are family, I bet that'd make for some terribly awkward family reunions and holiday dinners, Aurelie thought suddenly, unable to keep from smiling a little at the thought.

With that smile still lingering on her lips, she regarded Caleb with a raised, quizzical eyebrow. "No, I wouldn't," she finally said, making no effort to hide her consternation at his query. "You certainly aren't the first person to ask if I could forge weapons for them, and you probably won't be the last. It's a little different in your case because you are a League officer, and not just a general civilian. But..."

Now, she did cross her arms and gave a sigh. "To them, and to you, I'd say that—while I have made swords and axes in the past—I choose not to make them on commission for the general public. I don't want to be held legally or personally liable for whatever uses my creations might be put to, especially creations as inherently and intentionally dangerous as a sword or axe. Even a weapon that's originally meant for self-defense could be criminally misused in a way that I wouldn't want on either my conscience or my business record."

Fine words, and true in their own way, for she had certainly made this very decision when she'd first left Kalos, and for those reasons. Just because she'd later amended the decision to exempt Rocket members from her prohibition was something that a League officer didn't need to know at the moment.

"Then I would ask: What weapon could I make that would be equal to a strong Pokemon with whom you've built a good bond?" she went on, her tone turning wry. "In our world, Pokemon are almost always a more powerful weapon or self-defense than a mere blade, which can't even breathe fire, paralyze someone, or teleport away from danger. It's true that knives can be used as weapons, but I figured out long ago that even the best knife will pale in comparison to just an average Pokemon."

The red-haired smith sighed again. "So, in short, if you asked, I would say no. There's not much profit or future for me in making weapons for sale, and a lot of potential for unnecessary legal and personal burdens that I don't want." With genuine sincerity, she declared, "I hope to find success and maybe even fortune as a bladesmith who focuses on making tools for people that make their lives easier, that cut cleanly and smoothly, that don't dull or wear out for years to come. I want my business to grow, and endure, and change with the times, without ever losing sight of my goal to always make beautiful and useful things for the general public."

A little embarrassed by her long speech, Aurelie concluded awkwardly, "And I don't think that would happen if I said yes to your hypothetical question. So, I'd say no. And tell you to take your business elsewhere."

Time seemed to stand still as Caleb watched with intrigue as, for the first time since they’d begun speaking to one another, Aurelie’s general demeanor towards him had changed from polite indifference - a conversation between strangers - to something akin to recognition. It was in the slight widening of her visible eye, the way her brow furrowed nearly imperceptibly, a flash of shock, and then, strangest of all, the upturning of her mouth into an amused smile. A knowing smile. A smile that seemed to suggest an inside joke that Caleb was clearly the subject of, and yet, frustratingly outside of its meaning.

Whatever it was that she had just realized about him, however, it was something she seemed disinterested in sharing.

She’s lying by omission after all. But not about her business.

Attempting to hide from the uncomfortable scrutiny he now seemed to be under, Caleb shifted his body away from Aurelie, turning to look at the corridor that led to the bladesmith’s workshop. As she spoke, explaining her reasoning for turning down a weapons commission, Caleb attempted to untangle his mind from the mystery of why Aurelie might know him and focus once more on their conversation. Her tone was calm and her perspective logical: not wanting to be liable for injuries and crimes was a perfectly reasonable thing for a craftswoman such as herself to weigh when deciding what to create out of iron and steel and other such potentially dangerous materials. When she brought up Pokémon, however, Caleb’s chest tightened with a sudden disquiet.

”Perhaps Pokémon are stronger than knives and swords,” he murmured softly as she concluded her circuitous speech. ”But I myself favored blades once, precisely because I did not always enjoy forcing my Pokémon to act against others in violent ways.” He left his statement deliberately vague, but when he finally turned back to her again, he made no effort to mask the remnants of the grief he’d felt when he’d fled Kanto several years ago.

A weighty silence hung between them, then, until finally, Caleb exhaled softly; he hadn’t realized he’d been holding his breath. ”In any case,” he continued. ”If one did not want a specific Pokémon tied to a crime for practical reasons - perhaps burn marks could be used to identify the culprit, if a suspect was known to keep a fire Pokémon - one might prefer to use a knife or a sword to commit a crime. I have seen such injuries - such deaths - in the field, Miss Lefevre. Someone is making weapons, even if it’s not you. Anything you might be able to tell me about that would be most appreciated.”

[attr="class","monlyrics"]Time for some pointed questions
[attr="class","monbody"]"Ah, now finally we're melting it down and forging it," Aurelie quipped, a look of sudden comprehension dawning across her face as explained his reason for coming in to question her this morning.

Too wrapped up in her own feelings of understanding and relief to notice the momentary look of discomfort flitting across his features, she nodded ruefully. "Next time, please feel free to cut me off if I start rambling on and on like that! I see now why you were asking me about whether I make weapons at my shop. It is really quite...disturbing to think about knives like mine being used to hurt people on purpose, not just as a last resort."

And in her own way, she did mean that, for Aurelie had been quite unsettled to see Zev—the very man that Caleb reminded her of to such an astonishing degree—using the knives she'd made him to stab a man's chest. Years of only practicing against wooden blocks, dummies, or friendly sparring partners hadn't fully prepared her for the savage, no-holds-barred brutality of real violence. However, for someone in Zev's line of work, a knife probably was as effective as a Pokemon. That was why Aurelie had phrased her earlier statement the way she did; a Pokemon was unquestionably a "stronger" and "more powerful" tool for combat, but not always the best weapon.

Caleb had quite astutely picked up on that distinction, but he hadn't questioned her sincerity. That was good enough for her.

Looking up to meet his gaze, she paused for a moment as if pondering his request. "Well, I'll certainly let you know if I hear any rumors or news about something like that," she assured him. "But I should warn you, I'm still new to Hoenn. So, I haven't established enough connections yet to the local smithing and knife-making community to know who might be supplying weapons for criminals."

Sighing and shaking her head slightly, Aurelie contrived to look disappointed and saddened that a fellow practitioner of the bladesmithing craft could be involved in something like that. The pretense came surprisingly naturally to her. Growing up, Aurelie may not have had to bear questioning from the League, but she had had to answer to her parents about various acts of impulsiveness and quick temper that had resulted in smashed tools, upset classmates, or—in one case—many injuries and broken bones for someone she'd hated, giving her some experience in acting guileless and forthcoming under duress.

Then, remembering something else that Caleb had said, she brightened. "Hmm, but did I hear you say you were a fellow connoisseur of blades yourself at one point?" Aurelie inquired, breaking into a disarming smile. "That's always something I like hearing from visitors to my forge, even if they've come for another reason entirely. Unless you have more questions for me, can I offer you a short tour of my forge, if that's something that might interest you? Or perhaps just a new set of steak knives?"

When a somewhat discouraged expression came over Aurelie’s face at the thought of a fellow bladesmith such as herself supplying weapons to criminals - and at worst, murderers - Caleb felt the sudden urge to reassure her that things were not as bleak as he’d made them out to be. Remember why you are here, he chastised himself. If she’s the one supplying weapons then of course she will do her very best to appear put out by such reports. As the conversation had continued, however, sincere doubts had begun to creep into Caleb’s overall perception of . He’d entered her forge with far more certainty that she could be the person who had been supplying weapons to Rocket criminals recently; now, he felt torn between wanting to befriend her and feeling as if there were other secrets to be unearthed here, unexpected ones, ones he - frustratingly - could not fathom the contents of.

At her mention of his own interest in blades, he smiled somewhat wryly and shrugged, already prepared to embellish upon the half-lie he had already told. ”As I said, I have favored blades in the past - primarily for self defense - precisely because I am the sort of person who uses Pokémon as a last resort during combat with other humans.” Flashes of memories from the not-so-distant past invaded his mind then - torture chambers with permanent blood stains on the ground, the way it had felt to sink a sharp knife into a man’s chest (far more brute strength was required to kill a man by stabbing them than one might expect), and the look in Ambrose’s eyes when Caleb had –

Something tugged at his arm. Caleb snapped out of his reverie and looked down to see Comet staring up at him with a curious sort of expression. Everything okay? the Lucario’s dark eyes seemed to ask. He’d been so engrossed in his conversation with Aurelie that he’d forgotten the Pokémon had even accompanied him into the shop.

Caleb smiled sheepishly and continued addressing the woman before him, ”A tour of your forge would be most welcome. I admit, I am curious to see behind the curtain, so to speak. How does an artist such as yourself create such fine pieces?” He waved a hand in front of the nearest display case. ”Such knowledge would be kept with the utmost respect for your craft, of course. And who knows, I may commission something from you after all.”

[attr="class","monlyrics"]Time for some pointed questions
[attr="class","monbody"]Raising an eyebrow quizzically, Aurelie watched in patient silence as reiterated his rationale for preferring to use blades rather than Pokemon in combat and then had some sort of wordless exchange with the Lucario who accompanied him. While it was all certainly mysterious, she wasn't about to object, let alone pry. The more time he spent in gloomy-looking reveries dredged up by what she guessed were dark memories of using unwilling Pokemon or blades in past fights, the less time he'd spend questioning her about being a weapons dealer for Rocket. He could have his secrets, as long as she got to keep hers too.

When he returned to the present and accepted her offer for a tour, Aurelie clapped her hands cheerfully and smiled. "Wonderful! Glad to oblige you, Mr. Sharpe," she declared, turning around and beckoning for him to follow her to the door separating the shop from her forge.

As she pulled out a ring of keys and inserted one into the keyhole, she added laughingly, "And please, there's no need for such fancy words and vows. I'm no prima donna artistic genius whose creative ego needs a lot of coddling and flattering. The techniques and skills I use aren't terribly different from what smiths and knife-makers have been doing for centuries. I'm just lucky to have more modern technology and conveniences to work with. Ah, and here we are!"

She swung open the door and strode inside, tilting her head back with an expression of deep pride and satisfaction on her features. Then she glanced back at Caleb, and her smile took on a distinctly self-deprecating note. "I suppose it's not much of a tour, since it's just one room," she said wryly. "But I can walk you through the basic process and equipment, I suppose."

Walking to one side of the large, high-ceilinged room, she pointed out a high worktable next to bins with neat labels written with things like "80CrV2", "1095", "5160", "420", "440", "D2", or "leaf spring". "I start here by selecting the steels I'll use in a knife, depending on what the customer wants, whether it's hardness, corrosion resistance, edge retention, or affordability. If the customer wants multi-layer Damascus, then I'll stack several pieces of different metals together and weld them together for forging. I'll sketch out the length and shape of the knife here with pencil and paper. Then I take the metal and heat it up here," and she indicated one of the dormant propane forges, which looked like long, black rectangular tubes with three burners on top.

"Once it's heated to temperature, I'll square off the billet—that's the term we use for a metal bar we're working on—in this hydraulic press here," she continued, pointing to the machine in question. "I'll hammer the metal billet to shape on the anvil, here. This is where we start defining the different properties of the blade, like the point, the tang, any curvature in the blade, things like that."

She then described the process of grinding the blade to shape on the grinders, which she pointed out to Caleb along with the variety of belts, and then thermocycling and quenching the blade in oil. She mimed out the quenching process with a playful grin, her arms waving in the air as if to ward off an imaginary fireball rising from the oil. Then Aurelie talked about tempering the blade in one of her tempering ovens, meant to reduce the brittleness of the quenched metal, and then continuing to grind the metal to lustrous smoothness and sometimes incising fullers down the length of the blade to make it lighter while keeping its strength.

After that, she guided Caleb to the tall shelves containing handle materials, which ranged from colorful synthetics to a variety of attractive woods, animal horn, and leather. She didn't go into too much detail with handle-making but did emphasize that she worked hard to sculpt and contour the handles so that they were comfortable to grip and easy to hold onto, without hurting the user. "After all," Aurelie quipped, "we're trying to cut the thing on the other side of the blade, not the user."

This segued naturally into the process of sharpening the blade, and Aurelie listed the number of different edge geometries she normally liked to use, from the classic V-shaped edge to convex edges and appleseed edges to hollow grinds. "From here, the blade would be normally considered finished, although I do like to test it before I give it to the customer. That way, I know I'm not giving them an inferior or underperforming product."

She put her hands on her hips, trying to think of anything else. "Well, that's most of the process, I suppose. I hope I made it clear enough, and hopefully not even more confusing! Let me know if you have any questions, Mr. Sharpe."

"Crystal clear," Caleb murmured appreciatively when Aurelie asked if she'd been clear enough during her tour. So clear, in fact, that Caleb really was starting to think that this woman had nothing illegal to hide; after all, she had been more than candid in her explanations of her process, and his scrutiny of the forge room had turned up nothing overly suspicious. It was a beautiful working space, he'd noted - not because it was shiny and clean, but precisely because it was not. It was the sort of beauty one finds in a well-loved, well-oiled machine, the signs of constant use a testament to how deeply someone favors it. It was the sort of beauty found in calloused hands that toiled all day to put food on the table; the sort of beauty present in the most fundamental of elements: fire, metal, and wood. This was Aurelie's domain, and when she walked within it, she glowed. She didn't forge blades because she felt she had to, or because she needed to, but because she wanted to. It truly was an art for her.

"Only one question," Caleb smiled, as Comet sidled up to him, finished with his own sweep of the forge. "How much to commission a utility blade? Something an officer such as myself might use from time to time - hopefully not for self defense, but just in case. But more often for things like cutting through a tough material in a pinch. Maybe something where the blade can be hidden if needed - pocket knife or switchblade style? For safety of course, and transport." His casual, if sincere, tone of voice seemed to suggest that the interrogation part of his visit was officially over. Now he was merely a customer.

"Truth be told, Miss Lefevre," He continued. "You have impressed me, and I apologize for taking up so much of your time. The safety of Hoenn is of my utmost concern, but an investigation is never a pleasant thing for a business owner - and craftswoman - to have to endure. All the same, I appreciate your cooperation. It seems there is nothing amiss here." He briefly flashed her a pointed look, as if to suggest, last chance to come clean about anything I may have missed, but he didn't overdo it. She had been quite accommodating indeed.

[attr="class","monlyrics"]Time for some pointed questions
[attr="class","monbody"]Aurelie beamed with mingled pride and gratitude as she watched the understanding and admiration of her chosen vocation shining clearly on 's handsome—and eerily, unsettlingly familiar—features. He really did look like someone who truly appreciated a good blade—again, rather disconcertingly like Zev, a similarity that Aurelie was still having trouble reconciling fully in her mind. For the moment, though, she was glad enough to be able to search his face and see no lingering signs of suspicion or distrust as he looked about her forge.

And when it turned out he wanted to commission something from her, Aurelie's smile deepened with satisfaction. She made up her mind to do at least as good a job on his commission as she had on Zev's, if not better. This was a customer she wanted to have on her side, thinking well of her.

As he described his ideas and requests, she listened intently, reaching for a piece of paper to jot down some notes. "Ah, a folding knife!" she exclaimed, perking up with interest. "That makes sense for someone like you, looking for an everyday utility knife you can carry everywhere. I haven't made a great many of those," she admitted, rubbing her chin thoughtfully, "but I'm confident I can manage the thumb stud and locking mechanisms to keep the blade secured when you need it to be."

When he brought up wanting to cut through things in daily life, she nodded knowingly. "Probably some serrations near the guard too for sawing," she decided aloud, "and a sharp clip point for greater precision and for puncturing holes in things, like thick leather. Plus a good sturdy synthetic handle to reduce the risk of cracking or splitting on impact, with a pocket clip so you can attach it to a belt or pocket." She wrote quickly, recording her thoughts while he spoke.

When he thanked her for her cooperation and concluded there was nothing amiss in her workshop, she nodded somewhat absently, her mind already absorbed in the design process for the new knife. Thus, she entirely missed the pointed look he gave her at the very end, inviting her to share any information she'd been withholding. Only his polite words of explanation and apology sank in for her.

"No trouble at all, Mr. Sharpe," she replied agreeably. "As I said before, I'm always happy to assist the League's officers if I can. And I'm especially happy to be able to assist you with my own particular craft. It will be an honor to make such an interesting knife for you."

She pursed her lips in thought, looking back down at her notes. "I can't give you a full estimate yet, as I need to figure out what materials I have on hand and how much time I can spend on this project. I normally ask for a down payment," and she named her usual fee, "and I can get in touch with you once the knife is done and deliver it for the balance of the payment. We can take care of that at the front desk, where somewhere in that stack of papers is an order form that I can have you fill out and sign for me and I can copy for your records and so on and so forth."

Ah, the joys of business, she thought a touch wearily. Flashing a warm smile at Caleb for the moment, though, Aurelie held out her hand, seeking not only the gesture of agreement but also the opportunity to assess the size of his hands for the handle construction. "But for now, shall we shake on it?"

And they did.
