Barnaby would be correct to assume that Thomas wouldn’t be appreciative of assistance. He hated being treated as though he was fragile-- it was a large part as to why he was out here in the first place.

Even without his specializations, he felt this would always be true of him.

“Well,” he says, conspiratorily, leaning in as though he’s about to tell Barnaby a secret, “I do have 4.5 stars on Rate My Professor.” His grin is warm, eyes brightening in the gloom.

An errant Snom detached from the cavern ceiling, falling with a squeal, straight into Molly’s arms. The Gardevoir regards it with lowered eyelids, unimpressed; she eventually tucks the useless larva under one arm, for safekeeping.

Barnaby snorted. Or, more accurately, uttered some amalgamation of a snort and a laugh melded together. As the laughter subsided, his smile naturally lifted into a comfortable, amused grin.

"Is there no better validation than accolades given by burnt out undergrads?" He retorted, obviously teasing.

"Professor, hm? Where do you teach, Thomas?" Barnaby wasn't too familiar with the various academic facilities within Hoenn. He knew of Slateport University, but that was about the extent of his knowledge.

Elsewhere, Barnaby's VULPIX was sniffing at a suspicious hole in the icy ground. Suddenly, a head popped up, causing the tiny fox to flinch and jump backwards in alarm! Upon close inspection, though, it wasn't a head - but a DIGLETT! He growled at the thing and pounced, but was too slow; the Mole Pokémon was quick to burrow back down and appear from another hole nearby. Would it be able to deceive the little fox forever?

Thus began Castor's game of Whack-a-DIGLETT. Would he eventually prevail? It seemed unlikely. Perhaps with Gabrielle's aid, however...

Barnaby’s laughter peals off the damp, ice-laden walls, like the sound of bells. Thomas his own chuckle in turn, gaze casting downward, warmth in his throat.

“I like to think if I can bring them a little joy and ease,” he says, honestly shocked by how much he means it, “then my scholarly endeavors have been worthwhile. What’s the point of teaching if they hate the learning?”

The professor stint had been cover, a ruse-- one he had fallen into naturally, come to enjoy, pulled a part and assimilated into his real life, his being.

“Previously at the University of Hammerlocke. I was on sabbatical in Hoenn when the dome went up.”

There. The truth, for whatever it meant.

A wash of heated air graces them as Leslie embers a Cryogonal that had been lurking; Molly uses her telekinetic powers to detach a Pokeball from Thomas’ belt and secure the snowflake-shaped beast within.

Gabrielle had had enough of Castor's ineffective nonsense. The little VULPIX was getting nowhere; meanwhile, his would-be prey seemed to be enjoying getting the better of the fox. Seeing this, the PERSIAN aimed a well-timed HYPNOSIS to end the futile game. Noticing a SANDSHREW pop up from one of the nearby burrows, she hypnotized that one for good measure, too.

Barnaby barely registered all this, instead focusing his attention on the idealistic sentiments leaving Thomas' lips.

"I wish a few of my professors back in uni held your view of things." Some of those lectures had been as bland as unflavored oatmeal.

"Hammerlocke, was it?" His eyebrows perked at the name of the institution. "What a coincidence! I attended Hammerlocke for my graduate studies. Are you acquainted with Professor Thibodeaux? He was one of my favorites."

Barnaby paused, purposefully reining in his enthusiasm.

"Actually, you may not be familiar with him. I don't believe I've even asked what your specialty is."

“It’s a rather new viewpoint on things, from what I’ve gathered,” Thomas said with a wry smile and a shrug of his shoulders. “I had colleagues who absolutely forbid students water during two-hour lectures. At that point, I’ll admit I don’t know how much of it is focused on learning and how much of it is focused on exercising control.”

He cleared his throat as they came to the crest of a small rock pool, filled with salt ice-melt. A pearly white head poked out of the water and gazed at them. Molly waved a hand and the Dewgong drifted off to sleep, allowing Thomas to zap it with a Pokeball.

There was a mutual spark of recognition between the men. “Ah! Yes, I know Jethro. We co-chaired a lectern on ethics in journalism at one point. Very shrewd man.” His voice colored with fondness. “Though I fear he found me rather… conceptualist, at times. More fiction than fact. I suppose that’s why he’s a journalist and I’m a philosopher.”

Barnaby’s face lit up like the lights on Prism Tower. To see personal connections here, in a literal frozen cave of all places, was beyond what he ever hoped for when he first encountered thomas nightingale.

“Ha! What are the odds?” He replied through a surprised laugh.

“Professor Thibodeaux is quite the character. I’m not surprised he thought of you in that way, though. The man can be rather rigid.” It was something Barnaby respected of the older academic. He had his principles and he stuck to them, to a fault.

“What branch of philosophy? I assume ethics but I’d hate to limit you.” Barnaby asked with a grin, a spark of curiosity in his eye.

A philosopher on a frigid adventure, exploring a remote, cavernous island? It was something straight out of a Nietzsche poem.

Meanwhile, near the opposite side of the rock pool, a GRAVELER stood near the stone wall, unmoving in an attempt to camouflage from view. Gabrielle wasn’t fooled and, with a nod from Barnaby, she HYPNOTIZED this Pokémon too.

Barnaby wasn’t the only one wondering at the relative smallness of the world-- or perhaps just the comparative vastness of Hammerlocke University?

“It is important to stick to ones guns, for lack of a better phrase,” Thomas agreed, “though I do find that oftentimes sticking too much leads to lack of fluidity in other areas of thought.”

It would never stop being funny to him that he, a trained killer, was a purveyor of the schools of morality. “Ethics, yes,” he confirmed, “though I did dabble in logic, and even dipped my toes into the philosophy of the mind.”

The Camerupt was made slow by the crippling cold. Molly barely had to move to cast her hypnosis, and Thomas hit it with a Pokeball before it could hit the ground and risk a cave-in.

“My other degree is in literature. Jethro once insinuated I picked my areas of study because I greatly enjoyed the sound of my own voice.”

Thomas dipped and he dabbled and maybe even dallied in the vast pool that was philosophy, but that wasn't what stood out to Barnaby as his turn in the conversation waned.

With a short laugh he admitted, "That sounds just like something Professor Thibodeaux would say. I can almost hear him in my ear right now." To be fair, Barnaby actually commiserated with the observation; he too was greatly enjoying the sound of thomas nightingale's voice.

"Literature and philosophy go hand in hand. Did you teach both at the university?"

Just as the question left his lips, a brownish blur sped past them down the icy cavern. Luckily Gabrielle had quicker reflexes than he did; she put it to sleep, revealing the blur to be a TOEDSCRUEL.

“I did, yes,” he says, testing the stability of his footing as he steps down a level, ensuring he doesn’t slide on the ice-slick stone. “And though I greatly enjoyed it, there is only so long one can spend sitting on a shelf.”

He grins in the low light. “Despite my affinity for them, I am not a book, and age does not look quite so noble on me.”

They carried on. Thomas paid little attention to the Pokemon around them, caring more for the company.

“I’ve lectured on about myself. What about you?” he cocks his head, cheeks ruddy with exertion and cold. “What is it you seek in these grand caverns?”

Gabrielle rushed forward into a new area of the cave; it was more open, cathedral-like. She found a SEALEO to lull to sleep before investigating the rest of the area.

Barnaby paused mid-step, his head arching around the grand ice-encased cavern they'd just entered. Pockets of sunlight fought for purchase on the slick walls, giving the place an otherworldly feel.

"To get away?" He replied, contemplative, while still looking around the dimly-lit space.

"I have a very public-facing career. Sometimes it's nice to venture somewhere where there aren't any other people," A warmth in his voice accompanied a pleasant curl of his lips as he added, "Well, most of the time."

His eyes slid to connect with the professor's.

"It was nice meeting you, though, Thomas. Definitely a boon rather than a burden."
