maybe battling is fun?

annalise is on the edge of her metaphorical seat as her pokemon launch attacks in quick succession at Greyson Connors 's delphox. the magical leaves sink impotent teeth into a kicked up clod of dirt. she doesn't expect much from cotton candy's dragon pulse, but the light screen shatters and residual energy strikes the witch. [break][break]
her voice grows high-pitched with excitement and disbelief as she looks between greyson and the battle, "oh my god! we actually hit her?"

his encouragement across the battlefield is proof enough. annalise claps her hands together in delight. "we actually hit her!"
[break][break]
the mystical fire lances out, engulfing cotton candy. annalise's smile withers, eyes wide as her altaria comes down like a meteor. she calls out for the bird, takes a step forward, but a hurricane puts her out. her singed feathers look dark against her blue body as she gets back to her feet.

but annalise doesn't let cotton candy push herself. the altaria disappears in a flash of light, back to the safety of the ball in her hand. she risks a look up, past the wormholes tuna tears open to fire future sight blasts into, to read the look on greyson's face.

a houndoom approaches, sniffing around annalise's unguarded backpack. or it thinks it's unguarded before it's struck from behind by calzone. the dog gazes at him reproachfully, but another strike knocks it out before it can take a sneaky bite out of the dragapult.

"don't celebrate yet!" greyson commands, though he can't entirely keep the mirth from his voice. as troubling as it was to see her celebrate such a minor hit, the attitude was certainly infectious.

the altaria goes down in a swirl of flame and smoke, recalled quickly after. greyson frowns, but says nothing. delphox, suddenly in an advantageous situation, begins to churn a ball of shadow in-between her hands. she holds it, ready to fire, when—

Greyson Connors's right. she knows as much as she glances away, worrying at the charms on her acrylics with the pad of her thumb. if she truly wants this — to be a better fighter and a fiercer protector — she has to let go of the lead weight of fear she keeps carrying around with her.

her eyes find his delphox as he mentions, proud, the trust fostered between them. a little smile touches her lips as the fire-type snorts with deserved arrogance. maybe with a little trust (and greyson's help), her own pokemon can become just as capable as his.

"thanks," she says, face warm at the praise. she's never considered herself a particularly good battler because she's not a gym circuit girlie, but it means a lot coming from him. "and y'know ... you're totally right, i need to have more trust."

change is super uncomfortable, she realizes, but necessary.

"it's going to be a lot of work, but i'm going to try," she resolves with a thoughtful nod. there's hesitation in her face in the beat of silence that follows, but the smile on her face betrays her question before she asks it.
