Greyson Connors had promised he would help her get stronger, so here they are! annalise meets him a little ways outside fallarbor town, past the farming fields, and onto the bridge. well, actually, he meets her at the bridge, seeing as though she's a little preoccupied with taking a video to meet him halfway, legs dangling over the edge where she's sitting.

"oops," she says under her breath when she sees him walking up, pulling her legs up and jumping to her feet. dusting herself off, she beelines for the gym leader.

"hellooo mister connors!" she greets, giving him her sweetest smile as she links arms with him and leans into his side. "ready to show me how to be super strong and stuff?"

annalise follows the tilt of his head toward the tree, squinting her eyes to see the corviknight against the shine of sunlight against its blade-like feathers. "okay, yeah, sure!"

she fiddles with her belt, indecision visible in the way her hand moves from one ball to the next, then back after a moment of thought. she finally settles on one, unclipping it from her belt and releasing a dragapult. [break][break]
"calzone, could you keep a watch out for wild pokemon?" annalise asks the ghost sweetly. with a minute dip of his arrow-shaped head, he floats around the perimeter to keep any wild pokemon out of their makeshift fighting grounds.
[break][break]
annalise waves at the delphox that appears behind greyson with a thin-lipped smile, uncomfortably aware of how the fox's gaze seems to burn into her. two pokemon appear in front of her after a bit more consideration of the poke balls still clipped to her belt. [break][break]
her altaria, cotton candy, is a given for a lesson like this. while the bird stretches her wings, the meowstic beside her regards Greyson Connors and his delphox with half-lidded eyes, looking unhurried by the prospect of a battle.

"not gonna lie, i'm a little nervous," she admits, tucking a lock of hair behind her ear. greyson is a gym leader with tons of experience under his belt, but most of her battle knowledge revolves around suppressing angry wild pokemon.

a flash of teeth, reassurance for greyson that she's still determined to see this through — even if he crushes her in just a few moves. "but we're gonna try our best!"

amused, greyson watches annalise begin her preparations. he'd worried that she would protest a 2v1, but in the end she settles for the path of least resistance — good.

greyson couldn't claim to be the most competent, and certainly far from the most powerful, trainer in hoenn. but he and his delphox had worked exclusively together, their battle prowess above the average trainer.
[break][break]
from the water's edge a shadow stirs, but the territorial corviknight decends upon it like the reaper's scythe. when he pulls out the thrashing predator, azure hide covered in extensive scars, greyson quiets the distraction with a premier ball. not even bothering to address the action, he turns towards annalise once more.
[break][break]
"good, you should be nervous. it heightens your senses and makes you more responsive to your environment." he steps away, and off to the side, allowing the pokemon their battlefield. "but these now heightened senses, when unprepared, can also hinder you. force you to make decisions your rational brain otherwise wouldn't. you need to be able to control not only yourself, but your pokemon as well."

he nods in the fire-type's direction, her thin smile widening, truly feeding into the perception of a cruel, dominating witch. she CALMS her MIND, eyes slanted but narrow, as she takes stock of the two pokemon in front of her. anti-climatically, she opens off with a barrage of MYSTICAL FIRE.

annalise absorbs each word like a sponge, soaking up every word of advice as though that is all she needs to get better. she nods, crossing her arms against her chest, and echoes the end of his speech quietly. "control. right."

control over her mind and her pokemon during high intensity panic feels far out of reach when she thinks about it, but she tries to reassure herself that it would come to her in time. it had to — team rocket brooks no quarter in a real fight. [break][break]
flames burst from Greyson Connors's delphox. annalise hardly has time to think of one attack, never mind two.

"hurricane!"

cotton candy starts whipping up a storm on the first syllable, mystical fire drawn up into its column until it's a veritable fire tornado. tuna blinks, stretching tiny paws out in front of her. a shadow ball builds in the space between, its shape irregular as it pulses with dark energy. the feline fires it at the delphox. [break][break]annalise's altaria doesn't push the envelope, the hurricane never churns its way over to delphox, leaving nothing but a circular char mark in the ground when it dissipates.

"how'm i doing so far?" annalise asks greyson, sounding uncertain.

a larvitar emerges from a nearby brush, and greyson needs to hold his hand up to stop the bladed bird above from descending on it like an envoy of death. he caws in annoyance, shrilling enough to shake the tree. greyson ignores him, turning the small pokemon to watch the fight with him.

"but don't get too cocky."
[break][break]
tuna's SHADOW BALL is 'captured' by delphox's PSYCHIC force, holding it in an orb of shimmering violet energy. smirking, she begins to infuse her own SHADOW BALL to it, all the while compressing it further. the ball turns an even darker shade, wisps of shadows striking out in arcs of lightning.

then she sends it back.

when it gets near, the ball explodes outwards, blanketing the area in inky black.

the shadow ball tuna had sent out is captured within the delphox's psychic vice grip, compressing it down into something smaller and more volatile. smile withering, annalise calls out to her pokemon, "w-watch out, you guys!"

they don't need a verbal warning to see the chaos created in front of them. cotton candy launches herself into the air, but she's caught in the blast. for a few seconds, she spirals into a tailspin before snapping her wings open and fluttering to the ground. [break][break]tuna waves her paws to create a light screen, but the shadow ball shatters it like a scatter of tiny, shimmering glass shards. it blocks most of the attack, but the residual energy knocks the feline off her feet with a yowl. she uses psychic to get back on her paws, fur puffed up in anger, and conjures magical leaves that float around her like sharpened knives.

watching tuna act independent in her anger reminds annalise why they're here — she can't always stay on her back foot. [break][break]
"tuna, magical leaf! cotton candy, dragon pulse!" she orders, looking toward Greyson Connors for even a crumb of approval. her altaria takes to the sky again, her flight pattern irregular as a ball of dragon fire forms in the gap of her opened beak. a beam of dragon pulse cuts across the ground toward the delphox. seeing her opportunity to get back at her, tuna throws each magical leaf in quick succession.

and while all this goes on, calzone finds a jangmo-o watching from a distance. he manifests beside the little dragon as the fight heats up, wordlessly sharing a moment together. the jangmo-o leaps to her feet in excitement as the shadow ball explodes, making the dreepy chitter with amusement.

greyson's face twists, eyebrows raising slightly, lips cast downwards — not bad. the combination of attacks was enough to keep any pokemon on their backfoot, even his delphox. that didn't mean she was being harried, however.

a pulse of PSYCHIC churns loose clumps of dirt, and an exertion of her will places them directly in the path of the MAGICAL LEAVES. each one embeds inches deep into the thick cuts of soil, momentum lost.

meanwhile a flick of her wand summons a LIGHT SCREEN. it was smaller than the one annalise henderson's pokemon had conjured, but a view of it from the side could speak to the thickness of it. it crumples still, beneath the onslaught of a DRAGON PULSE, but what remains to strike the delphox was significantly weaker.

"that was good!" he calls out, hands cupped around his mouth, "keep it up!"

delphox throws a rather flippant vortex of MYSTICAL FIRE at the altaria, sharpening her gaze in the direction of the two pokemon.
