It would be the first of hopefully many Rocket excursions that Summer would have with Casey Fincher, now that he was a member of the team. Honestly, going off and performing dirty deeds and such wouldn't be as lonesome, thinking back to him living a mundane life away from violence and harm.

Part of her secretly harbored a sadness that he wouldn't have that safety net and security anymore. But, if he was placed as her partner, she had less worrying.

Though the guilt would be heavier should something happen to him.

Summer wore all black, her skirt sheer though her neck was covered by a thin turtle neck. Perhaps to hide a few marks in case she needed to come across as professional in some setting. The jacket she normally wore with this outfit was abandoned at home, since the heat was already biting enough.

"I don't understand why they insist on sending me out on these ghost hunts. It's not like I enjoy this," she said bitterly, rolling a Poke ball in her hand as a sigh left her lips.

Would she admit to Casey that she was afraid? Absolutely not. But he knew her well enough that she was probably not a fan of ghosts.

The trees of Fortree were towering and dark, the night beginning to set in. She looked over at him, wishing that they could've just stayed home.

"Are you ready?"

Casey could sympathize with her regret, had she vocalized it. Instead, he spent the past month straight out of the hospital picking any fights he could. He was restless, and ready to die if it meant life no longer passing him by. Why, he sure hoped that ghosts were real, and that they could try to jump him and see what happens.

He had his hair worn infront to obscure his face, not so much matted as it was teased with a brush and slightly too much conditioner. He had on a black v-neck shirt with all his jewelry, and black jeans with a white belt. He wore thick-soled gym shoes, with laces as thick as his fingers.

With Summer complaining about the mission, Casey turned his head and smiled at her. He needed to reassure her, somehow. “It’ll be fine. We’ll just go in there, fight whatever’s in there, and get out. It’s not like we’re gonna stay the night.”

Casey smiled, looking up. The faint light of the moon pushed through the trees, but that led their shadows to grow longer as the night dawned on them. Why, he’d jump at the chance to fight a Gengar in these conditions. But right now, he tilted his head, and tried to diffuse the tension. “It’s okay. You can hold my hand if you get nervous. If you need a little night-light, you can hold my phone.”

Was he making fun of her? Sure. But in earnest, he pulled out his phone again. An electabuzz themed alternative to the Rotom Phone, with antennae and a striped pattern on the back. Casey offered it to her in an outstretched hand.

"We better not stay the night. I swear to Arceus, if it becomes some sort of fucked over sleep over..."

The idea was enough to make her shudder. Sleeping outside, in the trees, with no protection. And with the possibilities of ghosts nearby. Sure, they were there to clean out this base, but who could tell if there was much of a base to begin with?

Summer wasn't all that optimistic.

Not to mention...

"I'm not scared. Why would you think that? I just don't like ghosts is all."

Summer would cross her arms indignantly over her chest, only for a few moments before she decided that, while she wasn't afraid, she wanted to hold Casey's hand. Because she wanted to feel his presence beside her as they walked further into the forest, the light from his phone swaying as she held the phone in her hand.

"I went to POG Bank the other day. I put down some money to expand the business and for our house in Dewford," she said, trying to distract herself from the eeriness around them.

The idea of a sleepover in these conditions was exciting. He just hadn’t packed for the occasion. He smiled a little, thinking about the two of them having to share a sleeping bag. Waking up the next morning and grilling whatever they could catch over a bonfire… When Summer reached for his hand, he clasped his hand in hers.

He then had the nerve to poke her back, as if the two of them were being snuck up on. He snickered, but then in the corner of his eye he noticed something. A big teddy bear, worn down by the weather. No doubt left behind by some child.

He pretended not to notice, at first. He had to address her. “I dunno. I just think… this is exactly like when a couple goes to a horror movie so they can hold eachother. And that it’s not a big deal.”

Casey slowly let go of her hand, moving to inspect the discarded bear. “That’s great. I’m glad you were able to put down another housing deposit.” He still had some lingering doubts. Two houses. Who knows who’d be coming and going. He was so close to just caving and calling Trish. But then, the bear craned it’s neck to look at him.

The bear started to twist, before turning inside out. Out came a Banette, grabbing him and screaming. Casey was stunned, and in that instance, it used Screech, leaving him drained. He fell onto his back, heart pounding but his limbs hadn’t the energy to move yet. A pokeball rolled out of one pocket, and Incineroar popped out to run interference.

Summer, of course, didn't notice the teddy bear. If she did, she refused to acknowledge it in hopes that it was just an average run of the mill stuffed animal, sitting there abandoned.

Her fingers tightened on his hand, giving him an almost disapproving squeeze.

"What, you think we fit the trope of two horny teenagers who are looking to become exhibitionists in the woods?" she teased.

Summer watched as he approached the bear, now finally acknowledging its presence with a hint of disgust. It was creepy. It just felt like it was watching their every move, dirty and probably infested with worms or insects from sitting outside. She wanted to warn him to be careful.

But she didn't want to be some annoying mother.

"I think I will hand over the mansion in Mauville to knox prescott and samuel carter. Let them use it as they please. Maybe use it as a central base for the company, if it comes down to it? But my intent is to let them keep it, since we won't be living there. I don't want-"

Summer's sentence cut off, as the bear twisted. She jumped, letting out a small scream from being startled, as the BANETTE grabbed ahold of Casey. She fumbled quickly for her own Poke balls, Surtur, Frigg, and Loki emerging.

"NIGHT SLASH, Frigg! NASTY PLOT, Loki. Surtur, just do anything!" she said, barking orders like a mad woman.

The little squeeze of her hand around his made him laugh a little. Maybe she just didn’t appreciate his little joke? They had to move on, before the day broke. Clearing out the forest so some grunts could move in unopposed was number one.

He bit his lip, and shook his head. It was so hard not to laugh when she was like this. And he was sure her brother would be there needling her too, if he had the chance. “Look. I’m just saying… we snuck upstairs and did it at a party, with easily a hundred people in attendance.”

The mention of the mansion changing hands left him with mixed feelings. He walked through the snow to sit down and talk to her in that thing. But, it was staying in the family, so to speak. He smiled at the idea. “It’s been a while since we’ve seen them. Have you like… talked to those guys recently?.” But he wasn’t one to talk, having lost track of not one, but three cousins of his. Melody was in the Elite Four, and he’d have to work his way up the ladder to be worth her time. The other two? Just gone, like he was all those months ago.

Casey could barely stand, but he managed to roll over onto his stomach and watch the battle.

Night Slash worked like a charm, sending Banette reeling back. It leapt into a tree, trying to counter with Sucker Punch in anticipation of the next attack. It was clearly panting though, and wouldn’t be able to withstand another hit. While Casey was stunned, a Kecleon that’d disguised itself as tall grass made off with his shirt. The two wild pokemon were working in concert to prank campers. Incineroar jumped in and grabbed Kecleon, having noticed this a second too late.

Incineroar opened with Cross Chop, nearly totaling Kecleon. However, with it taking on the fighting type, the two engaged in that classic pro-wrestling setpiece where two contenders slap eachother across the chest until one relents.

Summer snorted, shrugging her shoulders.

"Well, not like anyone noticed we were gone. We just didn't make sure we looked decent when we got back. That's why Andres got the punch he deserved."

Stupid Andres. Always ogling her breasts and her body.

"Talked to Sam and Knox? Yeah. I work with Sam on a daily basis. He works for me now, essentially. He's working himself thin to prove a point to Knox, and Knox is being stupid as fuck about it. And my brother is just..."

Summer made no further comment on him, since their fight still made her boil.

Another attack would make the BANETTE faint, thanks to Loki's NASTY PLOT. However, it seemed they weren't out of the woods yet.

Literally and figuratively.

The temperature seemed to drop, chills spreading down Summer's skin, as an eerie laugh echoed in the woods. She looked around, drawing closer to Casey, when she noticed that her shadow had changed. A GENGAR was there.

"Fuck."

Surtur's flames lit the area with bright blue, revealing the culprit who seemed to wince back from the light. And the onslaught of attacks from her Pokemon began.

The mention of not being noticed had him nearly say that he was good at being ignored. But he held his tongue.

Casey glanced aside, and thought for a second. “…I’d do it again too. I hate to say it, but I’m itching for a fight.”

The mention of the two of them fighting had him concerned. He had to set aside any lingering doubts, and try to stand by her. Casey was still stunned, but he rolled over onto his back again so he could muster deeper breaths and talk. “It’s a long-shot, but what if he and I talked? I’m… kinda like that too sometimes. You’re lucky to not have to see it. I’m sure we’ll see eye to eye on something.” But he hadn’t met knox prescott yet. He was just going off of everything he’d heard. But with his new lease on life, his stubborn nature, he could probably handle another guy like him.

Casey tried to stand, eventually sitting upright and giving up there. That screech sure turned his muscles into jelly for the time being. But he’d bounce back, with enough time and whey protein.

Incineroar gave up their spat, using Fire Fang and knocking Kecleon out. The orange light flickered, letting the two see around them a little better. Casey then noticed that they’d been followed yet again. A chill ran up Summer’s back and she flinched. Casey almost wanted to yell “Only I can do that!”

With the three Pokémon between them, Gengar was on the ropes. Incineroar climbed a tree, then flashed orange. It did a Flare Blitz, here interpreted as a classic spear-tackle to pin the escaping Gengar. He held it down, and whistled for the others to jump in.

Summer looked over him, the muscles that he had developed and worked on from many work outs and training.

"I definitely say you win. No one would stand a chance," she complimented, with the slyest of smirks on her lips.

She wondered if he'd go to another Soiree with her, if there was ever another one. The thought was nostalgic. Go for the formalities but stay for each other.

His idea wasn't necessarily a bad one. She just wasn't sure if her brother would listen to him. Had Knox formally met Casey? Sure, she had mentioned him several times to him, before the accident and after, about how she loved him and then about how she missed him. Perhaps it was time for a real, proper introduction.

"If you could somehow get through to him, it'd be a miracle."

The attack on the GENGAR seemed short-lived with Casey's INCINEROAR taking charge. It was beaten down easily by the tam of Pokemon, allowing Summer to catch her breath and kneel beside him.

"Are you okay? Can you get up?"

She felt nauseous, and her head hurt. But to hell with that, if his old injuries came reeling back to haunt him.

The thought of giving into his feelings, of leaving behind a mess felt good to ponder. When this side of him came out, he couldn’t help but shed a tear. Casey was too far from home to lay down in the water at Meteor Falls and calm his nerves.

Casey looked back to Summer, and smiled. He craned his neck to look up at her from the ground. “…Maybe that’s not the right thing to say. I just… don’t want life to keep passing me by. But… thanks. For what it’s worth, I get so turned on when you get all fired up.”

The conversation took a turn. Knox had to be one bad dude to get her all worked up like this. But Casey had a twinkle in his eye, catching the faint glow of the moon through the treeline on his face. “I need to atleast try. I can’t help but think that we’d get along.” Casey smiled, winking at her. His hope was that he’d get to see that dream of his again, with everyone happy and safe, and able to set aside time for getting together. He thought this, blissfully unaware that Danny and Serena broke up already.

Casey tried to stand, but his leg buckled, sending his head into the ground. It took all of his core strength to not vomit, upon revising this unique kind of head pain. His necklace, bearing a green mega-stone pendant, made a sound as it glanced off a rock, sparing him a blow to the solar plexus from Mother Nature.

With the battle over, Incineroar stomped over. He then hefted Casey up, and gave him a shoulder to lean on. Casey smiled at Summer, and offered her his hand again. “I’ll make my way out soon enough. What I need you to do… is get some rest. It’s been a long night, and I’m worried about you.”

Summer reached down, to touch his cheek gently, and offered a kind smile. One that she reserved only for him.

"As long as I can help it, I will not allow life to pass you by. I swear on my life," she said, her voice soft.

And all of that was followed by a chuckle and a tiny bit of a blush.

"Don't tell me you're getting riled up right now. We're busy finishing this mission, babe."

When he stood and fell, Summer tried to rush over, to protect his head from being hit hard. She knelt down, her skirt dirtied by the ground as she reached for him.

"Casey! Are you alright?"

But there he went again. After his Pokemon lifted him, he urged her to take care of herself. That he was worried about her. Summer felt her heart crack as she looked at him, slowly rising from her spot on the ground.

"I'm not going anywhere without you. You can't stand or walk. You just hit your head. Casey, I'm more worried about you! Please don't send me away."
