[attr="class","monlyrics"]Keep your heart an open shrine.
[attr="class","monbody"]It was her father's birthday today. While Aurelie had never been particularly devout, her father had made a tradition of taking his family on the morning of his birthday to visit the shrines of the legendary Pokemon that he had most admired and leaving offerings and prayers every year. Why he wanted to do it, Aurelie had never quite understood. Was it to ask for their blessings, or to hope to attract the great Pokemon's attention, or simply to harmonize himself with the elements and aspirations that the Pokemon represented?

When Aurelie had asked her father, he'd simply replied, "Because it's important to me." And perhaps, that was the only reason that anyone needed.

Though she hadn't kept in contact with any of her family since leaving Kalos, she journeyed today to Mt. Pyre, where she had heard there was a notable shrine to Heatran. Heatran had been one of her father's especial favorites because of its dual nature of fire and steel: the two elements that metalworkers identified with most. Even though her father was an ocean away, keeping up his beloved tradition and visiting the shrine in his honor made Aurelie feel somehow closer to him. And if leaving incense at the shrine brought her good luck or peace of mind as well, then that was all to the good.

And thus, the red-haired bladesmith found herself huffing and puffing as she followed the trail along the side of the mountain, passing by the many gravesites for which Mt. Pyre was best known. Consulting the map that she'd printed off her computer, she estimated she was only a few minutes away from the Heatran shrine, which sat atop a rocky outcropping. She took a deep breath and readied herself for some meditation and self-reflection at the shrine, holding tightly to the bundle of fragrant incense that she'd brought as an offering.

However, when Aurelie finally climbed the last few feet of the outcropping, meditation and peace were the last things on her mind as she took in the shrine. As expected, there was no roof to the shrine, only four soaring crimson pillars to mark its four corners, and there was the statue of Heatran in the center on a steel plinth, surrounded by candles and flanked by open firepits to give the impression of the Pokemon being engulfed in flames. What she hadn't expected, though, was the ugly graffiti messily spray-painted all over the plinth and pillars, as well as missing chunks taken out of the pillars and paving stones too. Some of the candles had been stolen, and coal from the firepits, so that the flames that remained shone dimmer and weaker than they should have.

Aurelie clenched her fists at her sides and gritted her teeth. Even for someone as uncommitted as she, this desecration of a legendary Pokemon's shrine was shocking. She knew her father would be livid to see it. Since he isn't here, though, I'll have to be the one to do something about it, Aurelie resolved. Taking out a Pokeball, she released her Sealeo and directed it to use its WATER GUN to try and cleanse the graffiti off the pillars. As the Sealeo sprayed the pillars with water, she followed behind to scrub vigorously at the pillars with a clean cloth.

And if any of the vandals who'd spray-painted the shrine and torn pieces out of it returned today... She fingered the knife sheath at her belt and smiled grimly. She'd show them that fire and steel weren't just abstract elements to be revered.

[attr="class","skullbody"]Isaac was never much of a superstitious person. However, the League-Rocket conflict was doing a lot to make him start reconsidering. From running into a strange Mew-Man of freakish strength, to finding several Pokemon previously considered myth under the care of a child, to encountering a very avatar of Xerneas' power on a mission as mundane as a casino robbery, the significance and power of legendaries was becoming very, very clear to Isaac.[break][break]

Were they all divinity as powerful as Arceus? Probably not. Hell, Rocket was in possession of at least one Pokemon . . . drone . . . Thing that rivaled, if not equaled, their power. But they clearly had far more power than other Pokemon, and an immense will of their own to match. The idea that the balance of the region could be tipped by the whims of a Pokemon was as fascinating as if was mind of terrifying.[break][break]

And then there was M.A.G.M.A. While not all of the organization's ideals sat well with Isaac, they were right about one thing. There was a power in the unknown. The best way to prevent it from catching you offguard was to give it the proper levels of understanding. While their scope had broadened to encompass Megas, Z-Moves, and all sorts of anomalies, Legendary Pokemon were still a key focus of the division. If he could bring his knowledge to the table, perhaps he could earn some brownie points with them.[break][break]

Naturally, Mt. Chimney was Isaac's first instinct. As a dweller of Lavaridge, he (she? It varied so often in the tales) was a name commonly invoked, right after Entei, Volcanion, and Groudon. Perhaps it was that small town religosity at work. Perhaps it was the fact that they lived right next to a volcano that they were very, very interested in not bring incinerated by. Isaac was starting to wish he had paid attention more. But this would be his second chance.[break][break]

Or at least, it would have been, had the shrine not been ransacked. Big, ugly glasses and an oversized nose were doodled onto the statue of Heatran's face. Tags proclaiming "Almighty < Meteor", "So much for legends", and "If the gods are gone, can we have their stuff?", among other things, were sprayed all over the temple. And anything sufficiently valuable, as well some things that weren't, had been haphazardly snatched up. Only broken alcohol bottles and empty rattlecans remained in their place.[break][break]

"C'mon, Dhelmise," Isaac said. "Let's clean up these guys' act." The massive anchor hovering before Isaac bobbed once, then began polishing the desecrated shrine with a swirling whirlpool. Not only dod it buffer off some of this grafitti, but it also started sucking garbage towards the Dhelmise for easy disposal.[break][break]

Did Isaac know that, at this very moment, someone was doing the same thing from the other side of the statue?

[attr="class","monlyrics"]Keep your heart an open shrine.
[attr="class","monbody"]When she heard 's voice coming from the other side of the shrine, Aurelie flinched in surprise. Thinking at first that the newcomer was one of the vandals returning to continue defacing the shrine, she whipped her knife out of its sheath and whirled around to face the newcomer, preparing to try to intimidate them or fend them off if she had to. Then the words he'd spoken aloud registered to her mind, and Aurelie stopped herself, realizing that perhaps he wasn't a vandal after all.

Oddly, considering she hadn't been particularly stealthy, the newcomer apparently hadn't noticed her or her Sealeo at all. Even more oddly, she couldn't help thinking he looked familiar, though she couldn't remember his name or where they might have met. Lowering her knife, she took a deep breath to calm herself before deciding to find out for sure what he was doing here.

"Hello there," she called out, narrowing her single visible eye at the young man. "Are you also here to protect the shrine? If so," she added, with a faint approving smile, "you and your Pokemon seem to be doing a good job so far."

She kept staring at the young man, still feeling like she had run into him before. It had just been in passing, but she felt as though fire had been associated with that meeting as well, strangely enough. Fire, and dusk falling, and a big crowd of people, all standing around together...

"Wait a minute," she exclaimed, as it all clicked together. "This is going to sound strange, but were you at that bonfire beach party in Slateport City? I feel as though I remember seeing you there, with a blond girl." Cygne, that was the blond girl's name. She'd had her arm wrapped around him, if Aurelie's recollection of the evening was accurate.

If it really was him, then this made for a rather astonishing reunion in a very unexpected place. A big public summer party at the beach was one thing, but a small lesser-known shrine to a legendary Pokemon... She hadn't thought she would run into anyone else here at all, let alone someone she might have met before.

[attr="class","skullbody"]Of all the things Isaac expected from his visit to the shrine, getting jumped by a woman with a knife was pretty low on that list. He flinched back a little as he was suddenly being held at knifepoint, eyes darting over to his Dhelmise. The anchor's ominous hovering sped up a little, a pair of Power Whips snaking out from the algal colony on its back.[break][break]

And then the woman's knife lowered. "It's okay, it's okay, she's cool," he told the Dhelmise in response, the Power Whips retracting back into its body. Isaac sighed in relief as everyone started to deescalate. "Yeah. We wanted to take a look around here, but we didn't expect the whole damn place to get ransacked. Seems like people are really upset at the whole meteor thing, huh?" Not that he could blame them, but c'mon. Take that shit up with the League, not Heatran.[break][break]

Wait. Hold on. Yeah, yeah, now that Isaac wasn't being held at knifepoint, he had a chance to process where he'd seen this woman before. Of course! How could he ever forget someone so distinctive looking? Not like everyone showed up to a beach bonfire with bright red hair and a badass eyepatch. "Yeah! Yeah, you were totally there!" Isaac said, perking up a little at the recognition. "You were one of Cygne's friends, right? Though I kinda feel it was less a bunch of her friends and more a group she just dove right into chatting up." A soft, fond sigh came from Isaac. Yep. That was his Cygne, alright.[break][break]

"Small world, I swear," Isaac said, the smile on his face warm. "Your name was . . . Aurelie, right?" There were so many names being thrown around that he was having a little bit of trouble matching them to faces, but with how distinctive Aurelie was he was quick to catch up. "Good to re-meet ya. Though, shame it's in circumstances like this."[break][break]

While the humans were busy chatting, Dhelmise continued powerwashing his way across the shrine. "Protect's a pretty strong word, considering I'm just kinda cleaning things up around here," Isaac said. "This shrine's gotta be pretty important to you, huh?"

[attr="class","aurelie_lyrics"]Keep your heart an open shrine.
[attr="class","aurelie_body"]Of all the things that Aurelie had expected to do while visiting a Heatran shrine, tidying it up might have been around the middle of the list, but accidentally confronting someone at knifepoint would have been near the bottom. She really hadn't meant to put at knifepoint, but when she'd drawn her knife and spun around to face the unexpected intruder, it'd turned out he had been standing a lot closer behind her than she'd realized. To her, it had only been taking a few steps forward with the knife in her hand; to him, it must have felt like suddenly being assaulted by a mugger.

He'd reacted to it all surprisingly calmly, though. Aurelie doubted she herself would've been able to recover so quickly and start chatting so cheerfully with someone who had just pointed a knife into her face. Well, if he was able to let go of the misunderstanding so quickly, she could do worse than to follow his example.

"Yes, I'm Aurelie. Good memory! You and Cygne both," she replied. Both of them had instantly identified her after only having encountered her once before. Maybe it was just because of the eyepatch, though.

"And yes, it really is a small world," Aurelie agreed, taking a step back and letting the newcomer and his Pokemon continue with their efforts on the other side of the shrine. "And yes, I wish we had run into each other again under better circumstances too. This is definitely not as fun or laidback as a summer beach party, that's for sure."

A small, sad smile tugged at her lips. "I'm sorry for reacting so poorly when I heard your voice, but I thought perhaps you were one of the people who'd done...well, all of this." She gestured to the ravaged shrine around them, still being diligently hosed down by his Dhelmise and her Sealeo in tandem. "I'm not really a serious worshipper, but I feel like a certain amount of respect and decorum is expected in a place like this, you know? I suppose you could say it put me a bit on edge, so to speak."

She bent to pick up a discarded beer can, grimacing in disgust when she noticed it was still half-full. "I'm all for people blowing off steam, especially when we're all feeling a sense of impending doom, but that's why people throw beach parties. Going far out of your way to wreck a quiet little shrine on a mountaintop is just..."

Trailing off, Aurelie shook her head in displeasure. With her head turned to one side, she suddenly saw a flash of movement out of the corner of her eye, and her grip on her knife tightened. She tensed, trying to listen past the splashing of cleansing water from their two Pokemon.

"There! Did you hear that, just now?" she hissed to the newcomer, Cygne's friend. "I think maybe there's some people coming this way. At least two people. They're laughing and...hooting to each other? And whooping? Not very nicely, either."

Keeping a firm grasp on her knife hilt, she started to walk toward the shrine's entrance, not wanting to jump to conclusions like she had with the newcomer. One hand hovered over the set of Pokeballs she carried with her. "'Protect' might be the right word for what you might need to do in a moment," she quipped, peering around the entrance toward the mountain trail, "assuming these people are here for something besides leaving an offering to Heatran."

[attr="class","skullbody"]Phew. So he did have the right name. Isaac sighed in relief. From what he remembered (because god knew it was a haze of booze, well wishes, and flickering flame), she seemed like a nice person. "Hey, hey. Don't even sweat it. It's not like-"[break][break]

No, he was not saying she wasn't the first person to hold him at weaponpoint. Even if it was true, it wasn't like Aurelie needed to know that! "-you knew who I was. Pretty sure if I was standing in the ruins of something I cared about, I'd be itching for some payback, too."[break][break]

It didn't help that it was clearly less some good old fashioned rage against the heavens and more some drunken louts looking for a chance to make a mess. Ugh. What ever happened to the good old days of getting biblical with it? People should be climbing mountains, tearing their shirts off, and demanding to fight both Arceus and the meteor at the same time. Not this amateur shit.[break][break]

And sure enough, here come the amateurs. Isaac strained as Aurelie did, motioning for Dhelmise to cut the waterworks so he could hear better. "Alright, moment of truth," Isaac whispered. "Either these guys are some dumb kids we can scare straight. Or they're some asshats we'll need to teach some respect. Got any bets?"[break][break]

Strike that first part. One of these guys had more hair in his beard than Isaac would ever grow in his entire life. Yeah, no kid gloves for these guys. They were clearly already piss drunk, singing a hymn to the Weather Trio in a way that could only be charitably described as such. Clearly they didn't remember any of the lyrics, so half of it was "na-nas" and "da-das" and the other half were . . . colorful improvisations. Isaac hadn't ever heard anyone call Kyogre a soggy old c-word before.[break][break]

"I mean, it sounds like they have plenty of offerings to me," Isaac pointed out. "You know. If stale popcorn and flat beer are your idea of an offering." Isaac gently held the release button on two of his Pokeballs, slowly and quietly prying them open. A Rookidee was now perched on Isaac's head, and a Honedge nestled into the groove of his palm. "So. How're we gonna do this?" he whispered, joining Aurelie in lying in ambush.

[attr="class","aurelie_lyrics"]Keep your heart an open shrine.
[attr="class","aurelie_body"]When the would-be hooligans appeared in front of the shrine, Aurelie bared her teeth in a grimace and nodded in agreement with . Judging from the songs they were singing and the unpleasant way they were eyeing the shrine, as if they were debating between urinating into the firepits or knocking over the statue, the three of them absolutely needed a good lesson in respect. She took a quick moment to admire his Honedge, given her long-standing appreciation for the Sword Pokemon, before reaching for her own Pokeballs.

A simmering anger rose within the red-haired smith, filling her with fire and energy. If Aurelie had stopped to think about it, she would have realized how willful and irrational her anger was and how much it was tied up in her affection for her father, with whom the Heatran shrine was inextricably, emotionally linked. Damaging the Heatran shrine wasn't actually equivalent to attacking her father, but in her increasingly heated thoughts, it was.

But she was too angry to stop, let alone to think about it. She flashed a grim, humorless smile at Isaac. "Who needs a plan?" she said brashly, not bothering to lower her voice as he did. "Let's give them a taste of the fire and steel they've come to mock, and see how they like getting burned and bloodied for their troubles."

With much less subtlety than Isaac had used, she released a Flareon and a Delphox in quick succession and beckoned them to follow her. Her head held high, she strode forward into plain view of the three troublemakers.

The approaching men barely had time to blurt out, "Hey, what's going on? Who are you?" before Aurelie snapped her fingers and pointed forward. "Monsieur, madame, set them on fire, if you please," she instructed her Pokemon.

Twin jets of flame, one coming from about knee height and the other at about shoulder height on Aurelie, quickly shot forth toward the trio of weaving, gaping troublemakers. One of them managed to jump out of the way, but the second wasn't so lucky, as his shoes and right pant leg caught on fire from the Flareon's FLAMETHROWER. The heavily bearded man dropped to the ground and began rolling about frantically, batting at his feet to put out the fire and yelling in pain.

The third man, however, not only dodged the flames but also stepped forward, his thick features contorted with fury. Pulling out a Pokeball of his own, he released a pebbly, tough-looking Geodude. In remarkable—and rather hilarious, if not for the hostility of the situation—unison, he and his Pokemon both balled their fists and cracked their knuckles as they stared threateningly at Aurelie. The red-haired smith gulped as she looked at the man, a few inches taller and at least fifty pounds heavier than she was, and gripped her knife tightly.

However, her voice was steady, if a little softer than before, when she spoke up again. "Go away," she said simply. "Climb back down the trail, sober up, and go home. You aren't welcome here."

[attr="class","skullbody"]Okay. This seemed like a simple enough plan, honestly. Get in there. Rough up some Pokemon. Startle some assholes. Shoo them away so they didn't come back. Cut them up and burn them- wait, okay, what?[break][break]

Maybe Isaac didn't hear right. He had just been a dramatic bastard about wrestling Arceus on a mountaintop. Surely, Aurelie was just turning up the theatrics too, right? She wasn't about to just execute people for being public nuisances![break][break]

Oh. Oh, she just asked her Pokemon to burn someone alive. Today had just escalated. A lot.[break][break]

Yeah, no. Isaac wasn't going to be burying people behind a shrine today. It was time to scare the piss out of these guys before they overcommitted and got themselves incinerated. One of the three was already neutralized, hit by a glancing blow of a flame and clearly too busy patting himself out to fuck with Aurelie any further. But the others were still gearing up to fight back.[break][break]

Isaac whistled over to Halberd, who nodded and eyed the trainer that had dodged away from the fire. The man had just gotten a Pokeball in his hand when Halberd dive bombed him, snatching the Pokeball in his talons. Immediately, the man did a double take, shouting for the bird to get back here with his Pokeball. It was almost goofy, watching him running around in circles, jumping, and flailing his arms to try and get Halberd down. It sure didn't help that Halberd kept dive bombing and pecking at him to stop him from getting any ground.[break][break]

The second man would find Dhelmise looming over him like an angel of death. A pair of Power Whips stretched out from the algal colony, beating down on the man's leg repeatedly. It couldn't be further from graceful or gentle, but it was at least getting the done. Soon, the burned, brutalized man was left staring down an ominously hovering anchor. His words caught in his throat as he tried to say something, anything in response. But Dhelmise only answered his conversational efforts with more ominous hovering.[break][break]

Fuck it. He'd deal with the leg pain later. For now, with soot-riddled pants and wild, fearful eyes, the bearded man turned tail and ran, screaming.[break][break]

The third man actually squared up, facing Aurelie and her knife with nothing but his fists. He was gutsy. He was big. And unlike the other two, he'd actually managed to fish out a Pokemon. Nevertheless, Aurelie stared him down with a steely determination. It was admirable, even if Isaac was half concerned that she was about to stab a hole through the man if he didn't back down.[break][break]

Still, rock and ground. That was a mixture that could be trouble. Maybe Isaac'd need to even the odds some. He stabbed Luck and Pluck into the ground, the flame of the shrine's torches sending his shadow stretching outward. It stretched, contorted, and quivered like some sort of serpent, before rising from the ground behind the Geodude. The shadow was every bit as sharp and dangerous as the Honedge's actual edge.

[attr="class","aurelie_lyrics"]Keep your heart an open shrine.
[attr="class","aurelie_body"]Aurelie let out a whoop of approval as Isaac and his Pokemon swooped into motion, menacing the one who'd already been singed into running away and then snatching away the other man's Pokeball right out of his hands before he could release the Pokemon inside. What clever ways to disable them before they could even start to make trouble for us, she marveled. Internally, she maintained that her own method of scaring them away using her Fire-types—and giving them some burns and wounds they'd remember for a long time while she was at it—was a lot more direct and straightforward. But in the end, effectiveness was all that mattered.

As for how Isaac dealt with the belligerent third man with the Geodude, Aurelie could only watch wide-eyed and astonished. It was easy for the red-haired bladesmith to forget that a Honedge wasn't just a Steel-type Pokemon but also a Ghost-type, until she saw things like this sinister, shadowy sneak attack. She wondered if that shadow was the manifestation of the souls that the Honedge had absorbed, or something even more esoteric.

With an effort, she wrenched her gaze away from the creeping shadow. She mustn't give anything away to the Geodude's trainer, who was now fixated on her knife with a nastily speculative look on his face. Raising the knife, she reached into her memory for knife fighting techniques and whipped the knife through the air rapidly with flashy, diagonally slanting slashing motions, keeping his attention focused warily on her weapon and not on Isaac or his Pokemon.

His Honedge's shadow attack struck the Geodude from behind, causing the Pokemon to bellow loudly with surprise and pain as the shadowy sword edge sliced into its rocky form. As the Geodude whirled around toward its unexpected attacker and its trainer lunged toward it with a concerned gasp, Aurelie swiveled to face her Delphox. Inexperienced though she was with Pokemon battles, she sensed that this was an opportune time to follow up with a decisive second attack.

"Use your Psychic power, please," she whispered to Fiametta. "Flames won't help, but a mental punch just might."

Nodding in acquiescence, the Delphox swirled its wand-like wooden branch in the air and launched a strong telekinetic force at the already-reeling Geodude. The Geodude crashed backward, nearly colliding with its trainer. For the first time, the large man seemed to notice Isaac and gaped at the sight of the Honedge beside him. The man's throat worked silently as he seemingly contemplated the prospect of a two-on-one battle just for the sake of messing up the Heatran shrine.

"You guys are crazy! I can't believe you're doing this," he roared indignantly at the two of them, shaking his first and acting for all the world as if she and Isaac were the thugs.

Well, perhaps I really am one, Aurelie reflected wryly. It was a strange way to think about herself. Still, she lifted the knife again and arched an eyebrow at the man, silently inviting him to try her patience.

[attr="class","skullbody"]Isaac could feel himself being watched, almost appraised. And he could tell that Aurelie was liking what she saw. He shot a quick, cheeky grin over his shoulder her way just before she wrenched her gaze away from his Honedge. What could he say? It was nice being appreciated.[break][break]

And Aurelie sure brought forward a lot to be appreciated as well. Her methods were direct and blunt, but they were undoubtedly effective. Her imposing presence had shaken the third man into dropping his guard and ending up wide open for attack, and her own Pokemon's Psychic had easily taken out two birds with one stone. If Isaac was water, tricky and flexible, then Aurelie was clearly fire. And you did not want to fuck with fire.[break][break]

But these two had. And for that, they'd pay the price. "I dunno. You're spending your time ruining someone else's hard work and tribute just 'cause you're scared shitless," Isaac pointed out. "That seems a bit crazier, if you ask me. Or maybe just kinda sad. Hard to tell which."[break][break]

The man looked equal parts ashamed and offended. He balled up his fists, glaring daggers at Isaac but receiving only a cocky grin in returned. His buddy chose that time to chime in. "You really gonna take that from some shitty little twink?" he asked before taking a bird right to the face.[break][break]

"He's right. You don't gotta. You could always just deck me in the face and be done with it," Isaac said. He tilted his jaw at the man in offering. "Right here, just like that. Course, I can't promise my friends'd care for that. Human or Pokemon. And what would it accomplish, anyway? Just another tantrum? Taking your powerlessness out on whoever lets you get away with it?"[break][break]

"Guess you could just keep doing that, til you're out of toys to break. Or you could knock it off and try doing something worth a damn for a change. So, what's it gonna be?"

[attr="class","aurelie_lyrics"]Keep your heart an open shrine.
[attr="class","aurelie_body"]Nigh-forgotten in the confrontation now that had stepped forward, Aurelie's jaw fell as she listened with mounting astonishment to Isaac's speech, or lecture, or whatever to the drunken, belligerent would-be vandal. She found herself wishing a little that she could take notes. Or, more accurately, she wished she could take these notes for her teenage self, for the young girl who would get angry at others and used her fists—or weapons—as weapons, rather than words. Maybe if she had been as handy with words as she was with a hammer or knife, she would have ended up with fewer regrets—and fewer scars in both body and soul.

She touched the edge of her eyepatch with a small sigh, but didn't waver in her watchful stance. With the two remaining men staring at Isaac like they couldn't decide whether to take him up on his offer to deck him or to slink away in shame, now was not the time to mentally wander down memory lane. She certainly appreciated Isaac's equating the would-be vandals to scared babies throwing a tantrum, but she wasn't sure they'd take it too well.

Isaac certainly seemed like someone who knew how to talk himself out of trouble, though. He kept that cocky grin in place as he stared challengingly at the two men, looking completely ready for anything that they might throw at him. Aurelie could tell that was unnerving both remaining men far more than her knife, or even her Pokemon attacks. Maybe that discomfort would be enough to ultimately tip them over into just walking away.

Finally, the big man who had summoned the Geodude took a long step toward Isaac, balling one meaty fist loudly into the palm of his other hand. Then he drew back that fist and let fly with a forceful whooshing punch, just barely catching Isaac right on the tip of his chin. It was enough to rock Isaac back on his heels, prompting Aurelie to raise her knife in readiness for another attack.

That attack never came, though. Apparently satisfied with that one hit, the man lowered his fists to his sides and glared contemptuously at the shrine behind Isaac and Aurelie. "Screw it," he growled, sounding both irritated and unsettled. "It looks so fucked up already that it's hardly worth the trouble. C'mon," he said to his buddy, who still had his arms up around his face to ward off Isaac's Halberd, "let's leave these two losers and do something fun."

Aurelie let out a breath she hadn't realized she'd been holding as the two men slowly turned around and headed back down the mountain trail. Once she couldn't see their outlines anymore through the thin mist, she decided to sheathe her knife, figuring she'd waved it around threateningly more than enough today. She searched the ground around her feet, looking for the bundle of incense she'd brought here but tossed to one side when getting out her Pokeballs.

"You okay?" she asked Isaac, glancing over at him. With a wry chuckle, she added, "That was quite some speech you gave those guys just now. Like a really badass version of the classic 'I'm not mad at you, I'm just disappointed' parental reprimand."

[attr="class","skullbody"]Isaac rolled with the punch as the man's knuckles just barely tagged him on the chin. It wasn't a genuine attack. If anything, it was the last little expression of frustration you always saw when someone knew they were outgunned. It was the end of the line, so he hit something to vent out his anger and feel like he was still in control. And then he was gone.[break][break]

His friend had left, too, following in his buddy's footsteps. If anything, he just seemed relieved to be getting away from Halberd. A shame he left something behind in the hustle. Isaac looked at the Pokeball that Halberd brought him, then cupped his hand to help project his voice. "Hey, jackass! You forgot this!" Isaac called, winging the Pokeball towards the retreating man. The resulting THUNK! of metal on flesh was honestly a little satisfying. Isaac could see where Aurelie saw the appeal.[break][break]

At the mention of his speech being badass, Isaac smirked a little. "Heh. I tried," he said. "Though maybe I should've given your method a shot. I think the point of a Honedge would've been better for getting them to help clean up around here. But, hey. At least I gave them something to think about when they sober up."[break][break]

Right. She asked if she was okay, huh? "I'm okay. Trust me, I've been through way worse than some shitty little slap," he said. Had his eyes and smile always looked so tired? Or was it just a trick of the light? Whatever the case, as soon as he blinked, he was right back to normal.[break][break]

Isaac gave Aurelie a brief look up and down. Physically, none of these asshats had gotten close to her. But she seemed a little rattled by the whole exchange. It was clear that this shrine was important to her, and the lack of respect being shown from start to finish was sticking in her craw. "How about you? Doing alright?"[break][break]

[attr="class","aurelie_lyrics"]Keep your heart an open shrine.
[attr="class","aurelie_body"]Aurelie couldn't help but snicker when threw the second would-be vandal's purloined Pokeball back at him as the man retreated, smacking him right on top of the head with what she would've agreed was a highly satisfying thud. Serves him right, she thought spitefully, and probably less than what he deserves. Her smile deepened with relief when Isaac reassured her that he was physically fine and certainly none the worse after the first would-be vandal's melodramatic punch.

When Isaac tried giving her a quick once-over while asking if she was all right, though, Aurelie's smile faded. There weren't many times when she felt grateful for her eyepatch, but whenever someone tried the old penetrating-stare trick on her, she rather appreciated having only the one eye that they could gaze into to ascertain the deepest workings of her innermost soul. Wiping her face clean of expression, she let Isaac's brief scrutiny pass right through her. It must be nice, she thought, to think you can glance at someone you just met and tell exactly what they're thinking and feeling.

To his question, she answered politely enough, "I'm doing fine. Just glad they didn't come any closer to the shrine—or to us, for that matter. You got it far worse than I did, and it probably was only that little because you gave them such a sharp talking-to."

Dropping her gaze back to the ground, she noticed a faint glint from the corner of her eye. There it was—the incense that she'd brought with her to burn as an offering! The golden ribbon that tied the fragrant sticks together was what had caught her eye. Beckoning for her Pokemon to follow her, she walked over to pick the aromatic bundle, before heading back inside the shrine to Heatran. It was what she'd come here for, after all.

"You coming to pay your respects too?" she asked Isaac on her way inside, her tone light and easygoing. "Feel free to join me if you are, or to do whatever you came here to do."

Though her Sealeo and Isaac's Dhelmise had done very well at cleansing the graffiti away and tidying up the interior, the shrine itself still looked dim and unimpressive with the unlit firepits and candles. "Thanks for your good work," Aurelie said gratefully to both Pokemon, looking back toward the entrance where the Dhelmise loomed outside, "both of you. Now, Ignace, Fia, can you help?" she quietly asked her two Fire-types, indicating the guttering firepits.

Her fluffy Flareon trotted forward immediately to exhale a single fiery breath that immediately kindled the nearest firepit, the Delphox seemed to sigh reluctantly for a moment before setting alight the other firepit with her wand-like stick. Bright, twisting columns of flame leapt into life from both firepits, glowing in hues of scarlet and saffron, throwing off showers of golden sparks into the air. Stopping short of asking her Pokemon to ignite the candles, Aurelie instead lit each candle one by one in the firepits' flames before replacing them around the central statue of Heatran, until at last the statue atop its steel plinth shone in the light of dozens of flickering flames. Then she gently tossed the bundle of incense into one of the firepits, where it burned with a rich, aromatic smoke redolent of sandalwood, frankincense, cinnamon, and cloves. She stood before the statue awkwardly, unsure if she should kneel or not, and bowed her head.

"Give your blessings to my father today, Heatran," she whispered respectfully under her breath. "May your flames and your strength always inspire and strengthen him, today and all the days of his life."

[attr="class","skullbody"]"Far worse, indeed. My poor chin is never going to be the same," Isaac joked, turning up the mock pain in his voice. His eyes were big and sad as he dramatically rubbed his chin.[break][break]

It was funny. Perhaps if him and Aurelie compared notes, they'd realize that they were but two sides of the same coin. Aurelie dulled her expression to avoid others prying into her emotions. Isaac, on the other hand, leaned right into the absurdity. After all, if he treated any struggle or setback like a farce, what reason would anyone have to inquire further?[break][break]

As Aurelie asked about Isaac's reasons for being here, he simply shrugged. "I was actually coming here in hopes of learning more about legendary Pokemon," he said. "The myths, the stories, the history. What they've done, and what they can do. How people see them. How they're revered and feared-" He cast a baleful glare at the ruined temple. Were revered and feared, at least. "But after what's happened here? I think I should pay my respects, too." Arceus knows poor Heatran probably needed as many of those as they could get his hands on.[break][break]

At the mention of good work, Isaac smiled softly. "Thanks for yours, too. You've been good to this place," he said. The place still looked like a bit of a mess, but between Aurelie's protection, the Pokemon's cleaning, and now the lighting of the firepits, it was starting to come together once more.[break][break]

With the sound of Pokeballs hitting the stone floor, a few new arrivals joined Isaac's side. A large, older Aggron helped set any toppled statues back into place, while an Alolan Dugtrio zipped across the room to rhythmically bounce logs back into the firepits. The final Pokemon, a Bisharp with a scarred eye, stood guard by the door to keep an eye out for any other troublemakers.[break][break]

Their combined efforts helped finally put the room back together. Now it was Aurelie's time to shine, and shine she did. Each candle she lit cast another bit of light along the Heatran statue's metallic facets, the statue practically glowing by the time she was finished. The incense drowned out the smell of ash and cheap beer, and for a second this run down little temple felt like something truly beautiful. Isaac may not have been the spiritual type, but seeing a temple in full swing like this? Yeah. He could totally get it.[break][break]

He copied Aurelie's motions to the best of his ability, Kiryu promptly copying his copying. The rest of his Pokemon either lacked the body type or the inclination, leaving just a man and his Aggron standing by the flickering flames. Was he supposed to say something? Or was he just supposed to think? He really wished he had the time to peep at some of this shrine's texts first.[break][break]

Fuck it. "Heat treats the steel, right? Breaks it down, shapes it into something new, and then makes it stronger than it ever was before? Well . . . I brought lots of steel here with me. And you're never going to find better steel, anywhere. So, please. Lend them your strength. Help them become the Pokemon I know they can be. And help me, too, have the strength to do right by them. For all they've done for me, I want to make sure that I'll never, ever fail them. Is that okay? Oh, and, uh . . . go with Arceus and all that. I guess?"[break][break]

Poor guy. At least he was trying!

[attr="class","aurelie_lyrics"]Keep your heart an open shrine.
[attr="class","aurelie_body"]Aurelie smiled at as he and his Pokemon—a rather impressive number of Steel-type Pokemon, in fact—all chipped in to help clean up and reorganize the Heatran shrine. She had to admit, the shrine was looking significantly better now, thanks to the combination of their own efforts and their Pokemons' hard work. Of course, the shrine certainly had seen better days, and there was no doubt that a lot of valuable relics and wisdom had been lost from the ravages of time and more than a few troublemakers like the ones that she and Isaac had chased off today. Still, knowing that she and Isaac had helped rather than worsened the shrine's condition was a satisfying feeling.

While Isaac paid his own respects to Heatran, Aurelie politely wandered away out of listening range to give him some privacy. She had never been the spiritual type either, but she figured it was always rude to eavesdrop on someone else's sincerely spoken prayers. Leaning against one of the pillars, she let out a long sigh as the day's events—climbing up the mountain trail, scrubbing graffiti, threatening the three would-be vandals, and illuminating the shrine—started to take their toll. I'm getting too old for this, she thought dryly, running a hand over the left side of her face.

When the sound of Isaac's voice dwindled to silence, the red-haired smith glanced over at the young man. I wouldn't have figured him for the scholarly type, she thought as she slowly drifted back toward him, but I suppose it kind of makes sense. He certainly seemed to prefer using words instead of violence, and lecturing people seemed to come easily to him. She grinned. Maybe in a few decades, with some grey in his hair and a pair of glasses on his nose, he'll be Professor Isaac. Who knows?

Her shoulders sagging wearily, she flashed another, more rueful smile at Isaac. "Well, it's been an interesting day that we've had together, but also a long one," she admitted. "As good as it is to meet a fellow protector of shrines and hater of incompetent bullies, I think all I want right now is a hot shower and a nap."

She paused for a moment and then added, "But I hope that you do eventually find whatever deep lore or ancient myths about with the legendary Pokemon that you were after. That sounds like a fascinating research project to be pursuing. I wish I could help you with that too, but I wouldn't even know where to begin to look! But I'm sure there will be other places where you can learn more about Heatran and the other legendaries, somewhere out there in the world."

With the faint chuckle of someone who knew her joke would be funnier to her than to anyone else, Aurelie held up her hand generally in the air a couple feet before Isaac's face and lightly flicked her fingers toward him, as if sprinkling him with holy water. In a pretend deep voice that she fondly imagined sounded something like a priest bestowing blessed benedictions upon a follower, she intoned, "May Arceus bless your endeavors and bring you good fortune, child. And also lots more cool Steel-type Pokemon. And also, make sure you hydrate, because driving away troublemakers is thirsty work!"

Then she smirked and turned away, holding up a hand to wave goodbye. "Until then, take care of yourself, Isaac. It was good meeting you today," she said in her normal voice. "I hope you find what you're looking for soon enough."
