Locke double-checked the line of his old rod, making sure it wasn't in danger of snapping on the first bite. His Pikachu also sniffed at the geriatric fishing pole from his shoulder, visibly dubious about its effectiveness. Surely they'd get fish faster if he just zapped the water-it might even quick them right away!

But Locke wasn't just looking for something to eat. Even though they felt more confident of their chances in the fishing competition than any other, that was no reason not to practice as much as they could beforehand!

…But they could also use the extra food right now.

The yellow mouse hopped from his trainer's shoulder onto the pier beside them, cheeks sparking and glowing with anticipation. A little slack, one more tug, and-

A gloved hand broke the surface of the water, clutching tightly to the end of the line while the rest of the Mr. Mime slowly emerged behind. The electricity faded from Chu-Chu's cheeks as all three stared at each other with blank expressions.

Locke let go of the handle, allowing both the line and the attached mime to sink below the water once again.

"L-Let's wait for something else..."

The line pulled taut again, and Locke wasted no time in tugging back.

"Here we go!" he called to Chu-Chu, who readied himself again-this time electricity coursing down the length of his body and up his tail, where it gathered into a crackling Electro Ball.

"Hit it right as it comes out!"

The Pokémon broke the surface with one final pull, silhouetted against the sun as it soared overhead. Chou-Chou tossed the buzzing orb upwards, revealing the Marshtomp in full before engulfing it in a devasting electric shock.

Locke prepared a Pokéball to catch it as it dropped onto the pier-but the ground-type simply stood up, singed and smoking, but otherwise unfazed. It looked between the courier and Pikachu, before reaching a flipper up to its mouth and pulling out the now-empty hook with a pop. It dropped the end of the line onto the wood, saluted them for the free meal, and hopped back into the sea.

Something tugged on the line again, but this time he and Chu-Chu just gave it a nervous stare. They were two for two on the weird encounter counter-what could possibly be waiting for them this time?

The line tugged again, and with a nervous gulp, Locke finally picked up the rod. It didn't give as much of a fight as the last two, but that only increased the tension as it allowed him to slowly reel in the catch, until-
