"Phew!" Julia sighed out when the Rillaboom came to a stop. "That was a great move, Captain!" Chester's outer heads looked at her and squawked their offense. "Hey, come on, you know you did great, too!"

[break][break]Chester's dramatics aside, there was still one big issue: Just what had made this Rillaboom so aggressive? Julia had never heard of one acting like this before, especially not to the point of causing two entirely separate troops of other Pokémon to lash out, as well.

[break][break]Something pressed on her shoulder, and Julia turned to see it was Spot's front paw. The Lucario was staring into the trees, eyes glowing blue with his aura sight again.

[break][break]"What is it?" Julia whispered. It couldn't be another attacker, could it? How many angry monkeys were in this forest?! But when the bushes rustled and parted this time, it wasn't an angry Pokémon leaping out at them. It was two little Grookey, looking worriedly between the dazed Rillaboom and the Rangers. One slowly approached the Rillaboom, chittering softly.

[break][break]"Ohh," Julia said softly. "I think this Rillaboom was trying to protect its babies."

[break][break]From their places in and at the bases of the nearby trees, the Passimian looked on, realization and curiosity seeming to cross their features. Or maybe Julia was just imagining that. Either way, they seemed pacified for now, making no move to attack again now that they were all awake.

the ranger captain reassures her dodrio as well, understanding the squawk with ease as he has a few pokemon similar.[break][break]

after a bit of investigation and help from her lucario, the cause of the aggression is found, and lance nods his head as he surmises:[break][break]

"huh. maybe the rillaboom mistook the passimian's playing as an act of aggression."[break][break]

he looks over his shoulder, eyeing the group of passimian.[break][break]

"you gotta calm it sometimes, you know?"[break][break]

when he turns back, he notices one of the grookeys stumbling forward only to bump into julia's leg. it peers up with wide eyes, then wraps its arms around her leg in a hug.[break][break]

"one seems really fond of you."

Chester's middle head twittered happily at the praise from both his trainer and the Captain.

[break][break]At Lance's scolding, many of the Passimian drew inward, clearly embarrassed. One, however, stepped forward, carrying her own child on her back. Seeing another parent seemed to calm the Rillaboom a bit.

[break][break]"It could have been the Primeape, too," Julia said. "Though that miiiiiight not have been playing." She gave what remained of the Primeape a side glance. They started to hoot and raise their fists, but twin glares from Chester and Spot had them backing down, still looking angry. Julia didn't see any children among them, but she could only assume they'd be angry, too.

[break][break]Julia perked to attention at the feeling of something bumping into her good leg. She looked down to see that one of the little Grookey had stumbled over to her and was now peering up at her wide adorably wide eyes. And then it hugged her leg, and she felt like melting.

[break][break]"Oh my gosh, you are so cute," Julia nearly squeaked. She looked up to make sure the Rillaboom wasn't going to charge her or something. It still looked wary, but it didn't look like it was about to rush at Julia and try to bash her head in or something, so Julia slowly bent down to pet the sweet little Grookey. "Aww, I wish I could just take you home with me."

[break][break]Seeing its child being treated so gently softened the Rillaboom's gaze and posture even further.

[break][break]"I guess that's mystery solved, then," Julia said to Lance. "I just hope these guys can start getting along a bit better so we don't have another incident like this."

the odd thing is julia could take the grookey back with her right now and it would be no different than any other trainer capturing wild pokemon. it's just the world they live in, and though he's caught his fair share of wild pokemon, it is something to get used to.[break][break]

"i hope they can get along too. we'd have to come back otherwise."[break][break]

he gives the two groups one last look before turning his back to them.[break][break]

"that's mission done, then. let's head back."
