The desert seemed a strange place to be stationed as a Ranger. Talia was used to her work focusing on the plights of people -- protecting them, assisting them, and being at the center of the lifeblood of Hoenn itself. The plight of Pokémon, however, was just as essential to her duties.

So it shouldn't have surprised her, she reprimanded herself, that she was here for a matter like this one.

"I heard sometimes Rocket poaches here for snakeskins," Talia said to her companion as her topaz eyes scanned the horizon. The arid heat drew droplets of sweat on her brow, and she wiped them away, determined to focus. "It's no wonder the Pokémon here are getting aggressive, if so."

One more sin in an ever-growing list of Rocket's wrongdoings, she thought silently.

Julia's travels, both as a budding trainer and a Ranger, had taken her all across Hoenn and its varied environments. She was used to spending her nights under the stars, away from civilization and most people. Yet she'd rarely ventured into Route 111's desert with its searing heat and blinding sandstorms. Now, she was here on business with a fellow Ranger she only knew in passing, Talia Celes.

[break][break]"Yeah," Julia said, a rarely heard venom lacing her tone. She didn't like being angry like this, so she flashed Talia a determined smile. "But that's why we're here: to stop them and protect those Pokémon."

[break][break]She resisted the urge to wipe the sweat that had been pulled from under her skin. As gross as it was, it was apparently important for staying hydrated out here. Julia had brought plenty of water, but you could never be too careful.

[break][break]She lowered her voice to a whisper: "Oh, I think I see something." In the distance, the sands shifted and morphed over serpentine movements. If that wasn't a snake, it was doing a real good impression of one.

The slithering movements rippling under the desert burst forth in a flash of gold-and-ruby grains of sand, revealing an Arbok spitting venom from her fangs.

Wild as she was, the snake didn't seem intent on attacking either Talia or Julia Davis, at least not yet.

Fanning out the frills of her neck, the Arbok hissed loudly, and several small Ekans peeked out from the ground behind her. One by one, they fell into place behind the mother Arbok, their beady eyes all focused on the two women that had invaded their territory.

"It looks like we stumbled on a nest of them," Talia whispered, turning to her companion.

On the one hand, this was a good thing. It meant they could keep an eye on more of the snakes at once.

On the other hand, a mother Arbok was unlikely to enjoy having two strange trainers on her doorstep.

"This isn't quite how I imagined this going."

The good news was that they'd found a snake. Actually, they'd found several snakes! The bad news was that the mama Arbok was not happy to see them. That was to be expected, given the poaching problem in the area, but Julia hadn't expected a protective mother on top of that. That was a recipe for a lot of defensive anger. Luckily, the Arbok was just doing threat displays for now, but they'd have to tread carefully if they didn't want things to go south.

[break][break]"It's okay," Julia whispered back. "We've just gotta show we're not a threat."

[break][break]She wished she had a snake Pokémon of her own to show solidarity, but the closest she had was a Huntail, and she wasn't sure that would quite work out the same way. Sending out a Pokémon might be seen as a threat, anyway, so Julia chose to save that for if she needed to defend herself. Instead, she crouched down into a squat. Making herself seem smaller would make her seem less threatening, right?

[break][break]"Hey there, mama," she said softly enough to not be a threat while still letting her voice carry over the dry desert winds. "It's okay, we're not gonna hurt you." She knew most Pokémon couldn't actually understand human speech outside of a few commands, but she hoped her earnest feelings still got through to the mother.

Talia watched with silent appreciation as Julia approached the Arbok and her children, seeking to calm them rather than attack. As a Ranger should, Talia agreed to herself.

The snake peered at the crouched Ranger with a wary gaze, before letting a forked tongue slither out in warning. Something in the meekness of the gesture, however, seemed to satisfy the Arbok as she curled in place, letting the little Ekans gather around her.

"She seems to have decided to trust you," Talia said approvingly. The blue-haired woman then glanced about herself, frowning slightly. "I wonder why they were so restless, though? Perhaps something in the area has..."

A SANDSTORM kicked up out of nowhere, and Talia shielded her eyes from the sudden assault of gritty sand that flew in all directions.

Behind them, a masculine voice chuckled darkly. "Seems like we found a few other snakes in this nest," the new arrival sneered, turning to his companion.

Rockets. Two of them.

The Arbok hissed loudly, curling around the Ekans protectively at their approach.

What was presumably the father of this brood dangled limply from one of the criminal's arms, its treasured snakeskin gleaming in the sunlight.

Julia relaxed the nervous tension she didn't even realize she'd been holding, relieved that the Arbok trusted her. "Yeah, thank goodness," she said quietly. She had the same thought as Talia: Why were these snakes so restless? Julia had seen plenty of parent Pokémon protecting their progeny, but this Arbok seemed even warier than that. Talia was in the middle of making a guess when a sandstorm suddenly kicked up. Julia, too, shielded her face from the sand being flung around.

[break][break]There was a voice behind them, and Julia immediately felt bad vibes. From the way the mother Arbok reacted, this was probably the source of her temper. Julia rose back up to her full height and spun around, glaring. Okay, it was mostly squinting because of the sand, but there was a lot of anger behind it, especially when a purple hide caught the sun. Another Arbok. Was it dead or just fainted? She hoped it was the latter.

[break][break]"So it was you!" Julia shouted above the storm. "Leave these Pokémon alone!" Argh, gross, all this yelling was getting sand in her mouth. She fumbled through her pack for her Go-Goggles. They wouldn't cover her mouth, but at least now she could see a bit better.

[break][break]"Well, jee, when ya put it that way, I guess we've gotta let 'em go," the second Rocket said with so much sarcasm that Julia could practically see it dripping from his mouth. "Toxicroak, take care of these two!" The Toxicroak that was sent out croaked in challenge, making its poison sac inflate for a moment.

[break][break]Unlike with the innocent wild Pokémon, Julia didn't hesitate to use force against these poachers. "Let's go, Moony!" She tossed the Lunatone's Poké Ball out, and Moony emerged silently, staring down their opponent.

Grains of sand blurred Talia's vision, but the Toxicroak and the trainers themselves were unmistakable in the chaos.

The SANDSTORM posed less of a problem for her companion, however, who covered her eyes quickly. Goggles. What a smart idea. Why hadn't Talia thought to pack such a thing? She mentally filed the idea away, just as she had Eva Morales's suggestion for more potions in her pack.

"Cease immediately. This place is under the Rangers protection," Talia shouted, and again, the Rockets laughed.

The venom sacs on the Toxicroak began to bulge, but Talia acted faster. Her Dragonair released in an instant, the pale white glow of a SAFEGUARD coating herself and Moony in preparation for whatever poisonous intent the frog intended to hurl their way.

The sludge of its TOXIC faltered as quickly as it came, coating the sand beneath the Lunatone in useless purple spots.

In the aftermath, the unforgiving elements pelted her Dragonair and the Toxicroak both with dust and rubble.

"Nice move!" Julia cheered as the Safeguard protected Moony from the poison. "Moony, hit 'em with Confusion!"

[break][break]Moony's eerie red eyes flashed, and the sand-filled air in front of them began to waver like a desert mirage. Colorful lights popped into existence in front of the Toxicroak and then flew at it, knocking it back with telekinetic force. Between that and the sandstorm pelting it, it went down quickly.

[break][break]The Rocket grunt recalled his Pokémon. "Don't just stand there, you idiot!" he snapped at his partner. "Help me out here!"

[break][break]The other Rocket fumbled with his Poké Balls in a panic before managing to toss out a Krokorok. The first one sent out a Weavile.

[break][break]"Ice Shard that Dragonair!"

[break][break]"Krokorok, use Crunch!"

[break][break]Three chunks of ice flew at Talia's Dragonair, and the Krokorok ran at Moony, baring its fangs. Yet in a flash of light, its target vanished, and its teeth instead sank into a Lucario's blue fur. Spot glared at his opponent and growled, barely fazed by the attack.

"Thanks," Talia gasped out breathlessly, looking to her companion with a grin. "You, too!"

Her excitement came too soon, however. The ice shattered against the Dragonair's skin, and Lyra recoiled visibly, the pain from the blow worse than Talia would have liked.

"Come back, Lyra!" she called, and the Dragonair vanished into her Pokeball. Shortly after, a new Pokemon took to the field -- her Flygon, Navi. This time, the SANDSTORM bounced off her Pokémon harmlessly. "Navi, they hurt your sister. Show them why that's unacceptable."

Fixing the Weavile with a furious glower, the Flygon raced forward with SUPERPOWER, her sudden burst of strength and adrenaline pelting the Dark-type mercilessly. In the aftermath, the Ground-type seemed slightly less powerful than before, but the damage had been well worth it.

The Weavile fainted, to its trainer's acute distress.

"How are you doing?" Talia called over her shoulder at her companion, concern evident in her voice.

Julia grinned back at the compliment. Her thanks would have to be silent for now, though; they had a battle to win.

[break][break]"Spot, Aura Sphere!"

[break][break]"Krookodile, watch out!"

[break][break]The Krookodile unlatched itself from its opponent and scrambled away as Spot gathered aura energy between his front paws. His eyes flashed an electric blue before firing the sphere, which honed in on its target and knocked the Krookodile over.

[break][break]"Doing great!" Julia called back in a cheery voice.

[break][break]"Come on, Krookodile, get up and use Earthquake!"

[break][break]"I don't think so! Spot, Vacuum Wave!"

[break][break]As the Krookodile pulled itself to its feet, Spot summoned what looked like a whirlwind around his fists, then punched it toward his opponent. This time, when the Krookodile got knocked down, it didn't get back up.

[break][break]"Dammit!" The Krookodile's trainer kicked up some sand in his frustration and recalled his Pokémon.

[break][break]"You've got another Pokémon, right?" the first poacher asked, panic evident in his voice.

[break][break]"No, I only brought Krookodile 'cause we were gonna be in the desert all day!"

[break][break]"You idiot! Now what are we gonna do?"

[break][break]Ooh, this was Julia's chance to do something cool! She pointed rather dramatically at the poachers and said with a confident grin, "You're gonna stay right there 'cause you're under arrest for the poaching of wild Pokémon!" Spot looked at his trainer for a moment before crossing his arms and glaring at the poachers to back up his trainer. Even if she was being a dramatic goofball.

Was Julia Davis being a dramatic goofball? Probably. But was it working? Surprising well.

Outnumbered and outplayed, the poachers lingered awkwardly as they attempted to navigate the shift in their situation, before engaging in a tried-and-true maneuver: ESCAPE.

"Not so fast," Talia called, her Flygon summoning an EARTHQUAKE of its own to neatly pin the two men in place between several large rocks. "That should keep them busy," she murmured under her breath, somewhat astonished at how well this had gone.

This was new, this teamwork business.

She liked it.

"I'll call for back-up to capture the poachers," she said, bringing out her mobile phone. "Um, are the snakes doing okay?"

In all the chaos of the SANDSTORM, they'd vanished out of her peripheral vision. But with her goggles, perhaps Julia was faring better.
