Vs: Callan Young

It happened about a week after the darkest day, his turn arriving sooner than he had thought. Challengers were numerous and waiting times tended to be considerable in Hoenn; a miscalculation on his part.

The man marching through Lilycove Harbour looked the part of a busy precinct detective, loose tie swaying in the seaside breeze as hurried towards the gym with the look of a man in need for time.

As he arrived at the revamped warehouse, he flashed whatever reception there might be a badge and ID, identifying himself as Gwyar Wledig, senior officer and Deputy Chief of Sootopolis PD- otherwise known as the challenger.

The gym was new, barely furnished, the warehouse's interior still looked very much like a warehouse, with a coarse ground of sheet concrete for the tiling to be placed inside. There were no bystander seats, no stadium items, just a rough paint of a Pokemon battle arena between a large, empty expanse of a field.

The receptionist outside was a Ranger, who immediately recognized Gwyar's badge, saluted the officer and let him through. Callan was already standing by his side of the stage, and on his arrival, offered a formal smile. "Hello, Gwyar right? I remember you from Sootopolis." The large beam of energy rippling from his Aegislash was hard to miss.

Needless to say, he had a good estimate that the challenge would be good between the two.

"Welcome to the Lilycove Gym," He began. "I'm Callan Young, the Gym Leader. I started this gym precisely because of Sootopolis. And a need to make sure that we're going to have trainers that are more well equipped to deal with the chaos of the coming events."

"I will be using these two pokemon for your challenge." Callan unclips two pokeballs from his belt and tosses them onto the ground.

If he had any thoughts on the somewhat quaint but functional battlefield, he did not share them, instead nodding back at the Gym Leader, rock superstar and fellow Darkest Day Survivor, Callan Young.

"Likewise, Mr. Young." The man said as he approached the battlefield, holding out his hand towards the gym leader. "A pleasure to properly make your acquaintance."

You know, without the world coming to an end around them. Not yet anyway, they still had a couple of weeks from the meteor.

Gwyar fell silent as the gym leader launched into his proper welcome, and by the end of it, his only response to the man's question was a simple shake of the head.

His pokeballs flew out of his pockets a moment later.

A Gallade and an Aegislash took to the field, standing parallel to Callam's own the humanoid taking a moment to stretch his limbs in preparation for the battle while the sword simply hovered in place, regarding their opponents blankly.

The Gallade finished with a grunt before finally turning to his partner, tilting his head.

The sword finished regarding their opponents and turned back to look at the Gallade, her blue eye gleaming as she seemed to nod at him.

"We are ready." Gwyar said.

The Gallade held out his arm towards the Aegislash, and her flowing violet fabrics lashed out in response, enwrapping around the humanoid's limb before flowing up until it was embracing him like a vest, the sword and sheild dragged towards him until one each rested on one of his hands.

The violet fabric fluttered behind him like a cape as he raised the shield before him and held the sword under his shield-arm, settling into the stance with practiced eased and covering his sight of the enemy- but not the Aegislash's.

"... Begin."

The armed Gallade launched forth at blistering speeds, a gleaming sheen of steel flowing across the shield's surface as he drove it towards the Spinda's face, attempting to check it across the warehouse while lashing out with the blade towards the bird, unleashing a crescent moon of psychic energy at it.

Callan accepted the handshake, "The same goes for you Captain. Let's begin the challenge."

had seen the twin pokemon in action, but only now when he had a bit more time to assess it did he realize the ismple brilliance of the pairing. By proximity and by wielding the Aegislash, Gwyar had managed to reduce the attacking Gallade's weaknesses while simultaneously covering for one of Aegislash's very own, it's speed. As Callan watched the cape furl around the Gallade, his index and thumb slowly pinched around his chin.

The battle begins with Gwyar's combined Pokemon launching an assault on both of his. First, the Iron Head, second, the Psycho Cut. Mere moments in between both attacks. But before the combat engages, the Staraptor's INTIMIDATE activates, reducing both Aegislash and Gallade's Attack.

Callan's Spinda's reaction is immediate. It is a small, fragile thing capable of much destruction, and in this regard, it was targeted often for its small stature and rather harmless looking appearance. But it was not without its defenses, even if it was soft as and cuddly, it'd stand proudly in the way of a Blacephalon explosion.

Spinda's instinct proved true, as the steel shield moved towards it, the small hare's HYPNOSIS wave floated forwards from its eyes, like epileptic waves of light. As the Aegislash's sight and target was the Spinda, the wave would undoubtedly make contact with the Aegislash, should its course forward continue, unless another move were to be used to prevent it from falling asleep. The Spinda would then leap up and absorb the Aegislash's shield strike, the damage is less significant as it takes a raw strike, still managing to deal some degree of damage to it.

Meanwhile, the Staraptor moved, as it aimed to intercept the Gallade's movement. It was closer to the Spinda than the distance travelled by the Gallade. As it moves to intercept at an angle, taking the PSYCHO CUT, it charges through with a reckless BRAVE BIRD from the side, aiming to tackle the Gallade while the Aegislash's shield was otherwise pre-occupied with the Spinda. The damage it receives is not insignificant, though thankfully it is softened by INTIMIDATE earlier.

+ INTIMIDATE activates! The Attack of Aegislash and Gallade is reduced by 1 stage!
+SPINDA uses HYPNOSIS on the incoming AEGISLASH! It will take less damage from the IRON HEAD and AEGISLASH will be ASLEEP for 1 TURN, if it connects.
+ Staraptor charges GALLADE with BRAVE BIRD, it takes moderate damage from PSYCHO CUT!

Vs: Callan Young

Spinda and Staraptor; Gwyar observed them with keen interest. Staraptors, he was much more acquainted with than Spinda, having only encountered a few in serious battle while working in Hoenn.

It would be a good learning experience for Gawain and Galatine.

Galatine's eye feels heavy as they close into the Spinda. It's too late to realize what the little guy's doing until the effect's already underway, the hard steel of the shield connecting not as solidly as intended.

As the Aegislash falls asleep, Gawain stared, not at the repelled Spinda, but at the incoming Staraptor, lips set in a tense, thin line, eyes wide open and unflinching as the distance between them disappearing in the blink of an eye— along with the Gallade.

An unconscious shield is popping in front of the Spinda yet again in that very same second, encompassing most of its sight as it flies towards, backed up not by consciousness but by superhuman strength, the Gallade hiding behind his companion's large, comatose frame while trying to hammer the smaller Pokémon across the warehouse.

TL;DR:
-Aegislash fell asleep.
-Gallade used Teleport. He popped out of Staraptor's way and around Spinda instead, swinging his unconscious partner at its face.

Callan watches as Gwyar's Gallade avoids the attack with a well timed teleport, repositioning itself out of Alto's way and right into a counterattack against the Zenos, the warp catching the small hairball by surprise as the brunt of the shield slams into the tiny hare's body, sending it flying into the air as it launches at a wall, hollering as it does.

The Brave Bird missing, the Staraptor circles, flying backwards in a semi-circle arc to catch the tiny rabbit in a tuft of its fur instead to lessen the blow of a hard body. It was a good thing it was not a striking move, nevertheless it did still do some damage, reduced by INTIMIDATE, to the Spinda's body who had previously been struck by raw damage previously. It's stubby hands grabbing hold of Alto's feathery tufts, it rides the bird as it swoops back down for another BRAVE BIRD at Gallade, as Zenos performs a SKILL SWAP on Alto, swapping INTIMIDATE for CONTRARY, imitating its bird companion as it screes courageously into battle, lower the ATTACK of Gallade and Aegislash further.

By now, Aegislash should be beginning to stir back awake, if it was not already.

+ Spinda is struck! He takes some damage and is sent flying towards a wall!
+ Staraptor swoops after missing and prevents Spinda from taking damage hitting a wall!
+ Staraptor uses BRAVE BIRD again on GALLADE!
+ Spinda uses SKILL SWAP on Staraptor! Gaining INTIMIDATE and swapping CONTRARY to Staraptor!
+ Spinda's INTIMIDATE drops Gallade and Aegislash's attack to -2!

In Hoenn, it was usually about raw power. The strongest and most illustrious trainers gathered rare, mythical, legendary, shadow, luminous pokemon, strategy falling off by the wayside in the face of overwhelming might.

With that in mind, Gwyar could only clap, his opponent proving much more strategically minded than he's come to expect, bringing him back to the old days of the Galarian Major League.

Certainly The bird comes charging in again, its rider bellowing loud enough to rattle bone.

The Gallade raised Galatine in response, eyes gleaming a deep purple— and stomped his feet into the floor, cracking the pavement beneath him as he dug into place and braced, standing their ground.

A loud crash rings through the warehouse as Galatine's shield receives the Staraptor's blow, the ground beneath them crackling and splintering further as the inertia pushed back against them— before the shield suddenly grew terribly heavy, a sheen of steel rolling across its surface as the Gallade angled it down and shoved, attempting to ram it and the Staraptor's face towards the pavement in a violent, heavy motion.

The Gallade looked the Spinda with his glowing eye, and whispered into the back of its mind: sleep.

TL;DR:
-Gwyar is impressed. Actual tactics, wtf
-Galatine was hit by Brave Bird! It wasn't very effective.
-Galatine used Iron Head on Staraptor— trying to shove its head towards the pavement violently.
-Gallade used Hypnosis on Spinda.

It was a good combination. Callan thought to himself, against a single opponent, his Staraptor would have a clear advantage, but the combination of the use of Gallade's mobility alongside Aegislash's incredible offense and defense meant that when combined together, it was a devastating unit capable of facing multiple opponents.

Even as the combat moved on, Callan had been thinking of ways to handle this situation where his primary attacker was at a huge disadvantaged from the excellent combined typings. Needless to say, Gwyar's strategy was well thought out, which was why he had forced Callan to create a sudden change in momentum earlier, rather than later.

Staraptor's talons struck against hard steel, the Brave Bird's talons would collide, creating a shockwave that shattered the ground from its inertia, but it would do les against the incredible bulk of Aegislash in it's Shield stance. At worst, a fifth of the damage, at best, a quarter. The recoil sends some damage back towards Alto, who's damage began to accrue from the previous Psycho Cut it received. An Iron Head from an Aegislash, even with it's attack power cut down significantly from the twin Intimidates, was a dangerous thing to receive.

Callan raised his hands up in the air, as Z-energy coalesced between himself and Zenos, his Spinda. THe Spinda launches into the air, clapping once as the IRON HEAD came to forward to shove against the Staraptor. The Aegislash's shield instead finds itself blocked by air, as a flash of orange swirls across a seemingly invisible dome, glowing orange swirls like the shape of Spinda's eyes dotted across an invisible arc, as BOOGIE WOOGIE activates, blocking the shield and absorbing the hypnotic light from Gallade's eyes. With it's reality warping powers, the Spinda swaps its own parameters with that of the Aegislash's BLADE FORME. In doing so, it falls to the ground, unmounting itself from Staraptor's back.

BOOGIE WOOGIE: spinda erects a barrier that defends itself and nearby targets. spinda can swap stats and boosts with anyone whose moves touch the barrier.

In the ensuing black in midair, Alto manages to slip past the Iron Head, after Gallade utilizes its Hypnosis, as it passes through Spinda's BOOGIE WOOGIE barrier into a CLOSE COMBAT, beak dive aiming straight for Gallade's center of gravity in an attempt to send it spiralling into a wall.

+ Spinda uses BOOGIE WOOGIE to defend Staraptor and itself from IRON HEAD and HYPNOSIS.
+ Spinda swaps stats with Aegislash's BLADE FORME!
+ Staraptor uses the opening created by the barrier to slip under the Aegislash and use CLOSE COMBAT on Gallade

Galatine could feel herself become... less herself. A lot less. Was that why an excessive Z-move had been used? Had she been hit with severe inhibitions?! Alerts rang up like throbs from the pommel to the palm of the Gallade.

For his part, all Gwyar could see was the gym leader activate his Z-band, using a Z-move to block a regular attack.

Probably not a good thing, so best to respond in kind.

His own arm rose in the air, the keystone embedded into his mega gauntlet and the Galladite embedded into Gawain's collar synchronizing together as primal energy sparkled around them.

A shockwave rocked the warehouse as the primal energy overflowed from the collar and swallowed the Gallade completely, coalescing into a black shell that obscured the Gallade as the gym leader's Staraptor's rocketed towards him.

Its powerful beak punched through the dark egg and shattered the front to pieces. Those pieces spread outwards as a disc launched out of the egg towards the Spinda left behind at high speed— and produced a barrier in its path, blocking it from interfering.

The back of the dark egg was blown out as a large shockwave spread out towards the galarian knight, his coat and hair flapping wildly as the scene obscured by the shell was revealed.

A beak was pressed firmly to the gut of a newly changed Gallade, his arm extended from when he threw out the Aegislash.

The Staraptor's blow had definitely landed— but the Gallade had stomped his feet into the floor and rooted himself earlier. He had not flown away.

Despite the angry red bruise and lascerations now in his stomach, he was not about to waste the chance. Not even centimeters away from each other and with Galatine blocking the Spinda from interferring, the Mega Gallade extended arm fell in a blur of speed to snatch onto the Staraptor's wing and lock it in place.

His other came swinging up towards its stomach with a powerful psychic wave, a metallic bang ringing through the battlefield as the ceiling above was deeply dented by the shockwaves of the swing alone.

tl;dr:
-Aegislash doesn't feel like herself. This is IDENTITY THEFT!!! >:CCC B ut hey, now that they've switched stats, she's technically become a little faster. Silver linings... ;-;
-Gwyar sees Callan use a Z-move. He mega evolves Gallade in response! I think based on the forum mechanics, his stats debuffs are restored to base?
-The dark eggy effect thing is used to briefly obscure the Gallade and the Aegislash.
-Staraptor punches through the egg; Galatine is thrown out at high speed.
-Galatine uses KING'S SHIELD to create a broad barrier, to prevent Spinda from interferring next.
-Gallade clamps onto the Staraptor's wing with one hand and swings a PSYCHO CUT into its stomach with the other.

Alto's CLOSE COMBAT connects as Gallade mega-evolves on Gwyar's command, shown by the bright flowing energy from his mega-stone. The impact of the close combat, typically, leads to the reduction in the defenses of the Pokemon using it. However, with CONTRARY active, Alto's Staraptor gains renewed vigor, drastically improving its physical and mental defenses as a result.

The disc shatters, the resultant light obscures Callan's vision of Alto briefly, though it fades. Gwyar's MEGA-GALLADE gains a bonus to all stats in addition to a base power increase, the two INTIMIDATES are mitigated as a result. Galatine's KING'S SHIELD holds firm, blocking SPINDA from being able to act this turn.

Callan watches as the egg shell fade, Alto's wing is grappled by the Mega-Gallade, as it axes down with a PSYCHO-CUT. "CLOSE COMBAT." It would be a trade. Alto's claw shoots up, twisting itself free from the Gallade's grip as talon swings against blade, sharp, psychic energy lacerates into the Staraptor's arms and legs, cutting him to approximately half his health, improving due to CLOSE COMBAT'S paradoxical increase in defenses thanks to CONTRARY.

Regardless, the Staraptor shifts backwards to account for his opponent's newfound strength, in a swift motion, its talons swip against the PSYCHO CUT taking damages as it somersaults backward, using its wings to land. Callan assumed it was almost time to finish up, he had seen all there was to see in this match to make an assessment, now it was just a matter of the conclusions in the next two or so bouts.

The knight lifted a digit to his temple, humming.

Even if confident, leaving its ally to fight against a freshly Mega Evolved opponent seemed too reckless for one as capable as the gym leader.

Hypnosis. Skill Swap.Z-move. Inaction...

BANG!

Gawain did not move to follow the retreating bird— but he did move.

Flashing across the field with his newly empowered speed, his arms flashing with psychic force as he lashed out at different angles, launching violet crescent moons at the flier. By now, he had realized that trying to engage the opponent at close range benefited them more than it did him.

So the warrior zoomed across the battlefield, launching scythes of psychic force while in motion before leaping into the air and firing.

"Galatine." For the first time since the battle began, the man spoke. "Do mind the Hypnosis."

A strange order. Nonetheless, the Aegislash seemed to understand, fully sheathing itself into its shield before impeding the smaller pokemon's path with its body, slowly bringing out its 2 'arms' up.

-Gawain is doing zoomies and using Psycho Cut.
-Gwyar is big thonking.
-Aegislash is standing there. Menancingly!!!

"Okay, that's enough!" He calls out, clapping his hands together twice. No sense in prolonging a battle that he knew had more than tested the capacity for battle.

Once Gwyar's Pokemon were returned to their pokeballs, Callan would walked towards the center of the stage and hand the challenger his badge. A deep slate blue gem with gilded lining. "Congratulations Gwyar, that was one of the best challenges I've seen in my time as a gym leader." He replied, "the use of a Gallade and attaching an Aegislash as a partner to him was brilliant. I think I will use this tactic, going forward, I especially enjoy how well Aegislash covers the weaknesses of Gallade wit hits typing, which made what was once an advantage for my Staraptor into a very difficult situation. That was well thought out."

Callan paused. "You earned this badge, and I hope I'll also see you after your path through Victory Road... perhaps sometime after the meteor threat is done." A chuckle escapes his lips, though it is inevitably darker in tone.
