Before a timid Gracidea bloomed, and before the Darkest Day ever dawned, one of many seemingly insignificant nights in Elisabeth's home was spent calling FERNANDO SILPH.

Repetition had built what had been a passing curiosity into a bad habit, one that Elisabeth reached for the way some reached for liquor or cigarettes. In this instance, she was not in her bedroom as usual, but seated in the interior of her shop with countless flowers splayed out in front of her.

The first pinpricks of exhaustion and the dull monotony of tedium both had tempted her into dialing his number, placing the phone on speaker as her hands busied themselves with several floral arrangements due in the morning.

When the line connected, she responded in the same way as ever:

"Good evening, Mr. Silph."

No personal introduction followed, nor any apology for calling him at this late hour.

She'd gotten bolder about wasting his time.
