Turned on my friends and brought them pain. I have no right to show I can change. But I gotta try!

[attr="class","skullbody"] "Josh, thank goodness, I-"[break][break] Oh. Nana hadn't brought them a gym leader. Nana brought them another passed out body. It turned out running someone who had recently been injured on a far-flung, high-speed chase to the city limits may have been a bit of a risky move. Who knew? Now Isaac did, and that meant he went from one heavily injured body to take care of to two.[break][break] "Alright. It's okay. Don't panic. We can do this," Isaac said. Despite this, he couldn't help but stare down at the duo's prone bodies. Josh, with a slash that had been caused by Luck & Pluck. Even with forewarning given and the worst of the blow pulled, impact had still been impact, and he was clearly feeling the heft of the blow. Matt, who had taken a bullet for him. For him to get swept up into what should have been a matter of mano-e-mano vigilante justice . . .[break][break] Part of him hated himself. He was the cause of all of this, after all. It was his well meaning attempt at preparing Josh that spiraled out of control. It was his notoriety that got Matt on the wrong end of a gun. If he'd never showed his face in the first place, none of this would have ever happened.[break][break] Yet at the same time, it was hard not to resent Josh some. He saved his life from a partner who had every intent to kill those in his way. He treated the man's wounds to prevent them from getting any worse before the authorities arrived. He risked getting caught just to give him a freaking pillow, for Arceus' sake! And his reward for all of this was to have his motives deemed assassination, a proclamation that got Matt swept up in a mess he had no business being a part of.[break][break] And somewhere in between, eclipsed in the shadow where these two thoughts touched, a darker one festered. If he'd committed to what Josh accused him of, his life would had been a thousand times easier. There'd be no clues as to his identity without Josh's (fairly inaccurate; six feet tall, seriously?) eyewitness account. None of his friends would have gotten swept up in the crossfire, forced to suffer for his kindness gone horribly wrong. And to destroy an entire gym, even a new one, would fast track him to the highest echelons of Rocket.[break][break] Everyone's lives would be better, with one glaring exception.[break][break] The intrusive thought chilled Isaac to the core. He could already hear Zev Harcourt's approval, and it filled him with disgust. Yet, how could he argue? He had tried to walk the line between kindness and cruelty, and now he stared down the worst of both barrels. What lesson was he supposed to take away from this? Not to start fights that he couldn't bring himself finish? Not to burden himself with attachment to League personnel, because it could only end in tears? That he'd signed his soul away, and had to commit to the path he now walked?[break][break] It was okay. He wasn't Blackjack right now. He was Isaac. And Isaac was going to bring his friends to the hospital, and not worry about what Blackjack would have to do the next time they saw each other. Because clearly, that distinction still mattered. Clearly, he could just do whatever he wanted to or needed to under the safety of a mask. Clearly, he could live his civilian life guilt free. It was just that easy! It certainly wasn't something that would follow him like a miasma, each day another stain upon his soul that only grew darker and cloudier as the stakes continued to raise. Nope. No siree. None of that here. He wasn't a good person. He wasn't a monster.[break][break] He was nothing.[break][break] Every thought smashed into his head in the manner of seconds. It was like trying to push a Wailord through his ear canals. Agony. Pure agony. But his agony didn't matter here, now did it? There were two people in actual, factual, physical pain. And it was his fault, or their fault, or Rocket's fault, or the League's fault, or Arceus' fault, or no fault at all but pure chance in an uncaring universe. And despite everything, they needed him.[break][break] "Echo. Life Dew on Josh. Try and get him up. I'm not teleporting while he's unconscious," Isaac whispered. Time and space displacement could make people a little queasy in the best of times. While KO'd and unprepared, it could get Bad. The little psychic began tending to Josh, beaming his intents into the gym leader's head as he spread Life Dew on the worst of his wounds.[break][break] With that, he turned to Matt, who was fighting at the edge of consciousness. "Hey. You're gonna be okay. Kazzy and I are gonna get you out of here. I promise," he said. "I'm just gonna need you to take a deep breath, hold on, and count to ten, okay? Nice and slowly. And by the time you're done, we'll have you by some people that can help you."[break][break] Asshole from the woods better deliver on their hospital bills. If not, this wouldn't be the last bit of teleporting Isaac did today.
