“He’s doing well, busy as ever.” Though they are often both busy, so there is no resentment in Hazel’s tone as some lovers might be prone to betraying if they’re feeling neglected in favor of work. Hugo is attentive, however, so Hazel has no grievances.[break][break]

If anything, he’s usually more liable to be the guiltier party in taking work…well, just about anywhere and everywhere if he can get away with it.[break][break]

He’s lost in his own thoughts for a moment, then distracted by the sandyghast, so any noticeable (if there was at all,) change in Mars’ demeanor goes unnoticed as his companion communicates with the Unown Report.[break][break]

In fact, he is soon deterred further by a crafty mismagius seeking to stir up MAGICAL LEAVES as a little trick. His poteageist soothes it with the warm scent of earl grey tea from her AROMATHERAPY before leveling the opponent with yet another SUCKER PUNCH.[break][break]

As he observes, nodding in silent approval, his glance shifts sideways again. “You’re not wrong. You would think they’d need more loose soil to efficiently spring up. Though I suppose there’s plenty of oddity to find out here.”

As it often seems to happen when walking through Hoenn, the appearance of wild pokémon after wild pokémon interrupts the natural flow of their conversation.

While Hazel’s pokémon swiftly deals with a Mismagius that stirs up MAGICAL LEAVES, Xero spots a Dusclops among the trees, not even needing to point towards it to call The Architect’s attention to it. The Unown opens their psychic link, and through it, Mars sees.

He closes his eyes for a second, taking a breath and then looking down at the Unown itself. The psychic link returns to its usual passive state.

Not now.
[break][break]
”That much is true.” A chuckle, Mars clearly being amused by his companion’s comment. ”Hoenn is one of the oddest places I’ve ever been.”

This time, Hazel does note the pause Mars takes, and the concentration he seems to slip into for a moment. An eyebrow lifts, but he doesn’t presume to ask if something is the matter.[break][break]

He does consider it briefly, however.[break][break]

“I agree. It’s certainly stranger than Galar, in my own opinion,” he replies with a scoff of laughter of his own. Then he pauses, considering. “Though I suppose that is the appeal of it as well.”[break][break]

Hoenn is interesting. It certainly keeps him on his toes and provides him the opportunities wanted for continual study.[break][break]

A shy little ralts drifts closer, and as with the chimecho, Hazel offers it a poffin rather than go on the offensive with Grey.

”Ha. It certainly is.” Mars finds himself in agreement, since in his experience, the oddity of the region is often what draws people towards it. Even in his case it had been a part of the reason why he had chosen to move to Hoenn. Which, of course, leads him to wonder…

”Is that why you came to Hoenn originally, Hazel? The appeal of its oddity?” Mars asks with an ever so easy and calm smile. He’s more curious than anything, and unbeknownst to them, the region sure is about to get even odder.

It is probably very obvious by now that he doesn’t often use his Pokémon offensively. Because he doesn’t seek to fight the chingling when it floats their way with tinkling, bell-like sound. Instead he waves a hand to Grey, who drifts around it with the warm scent of peppermint and cocoa, her AROMATHERAPY soothing it and drawing it to settle on Hazel’s open palms.[break][break]

His attention drifts back toward Mars, and he hums in consideration. “I suppose I held some curiosity, sure, but I came for a fellowship while I was working on my doctorate.” Several years ago, now.[break][break]

Had all the oddity really begun by that point? He can’t recall. He’s so accustomed to it now. “Though it can be very much argued that that is a large part of why I stayed.”[break][break]

Along with the desire to be out from under his father’s thumb. And love, of course. But those are the more vulnerable, sentimental answers. “Is that what drew you in as well?”

A lot can be learned about a person when watching the way they interact with and command their pokémon, and despite the lighthearted nature of this meeting, Mars pays close attention to Hazel’s actions. After all, as much as he may like the archivist’s company, he is still Hazel’s boss, is he not?

”Ah, so before things got really crazy.” He jokes, but to a degree, his words are true. Hoenn had always had its oddities, but during the recent years said oddities had increased to an absurd degree.
[break][break]
When Hazel asks about his own motivations, the underboss is quiet for a moment, and the Unown-X looks up at him curiously while they walk together.
[break][break]
”I wanted a fresh start.” Mars finally admits. A fresh start away from the region that had caused him so much pain, from the family that had taken so much from him, and from all his grief. A fresh start at a place where he could plan his revenge. ”Hoenn is a place full of opportunity to those who know how to seek them. That appealed to me.”
[break][break]
So, in a way, the answer is yes, but truly he had chosen to come here mostly because of Team Rocket and the war they wage.

Despite his predisposition for peaceful encounters, he knows he cannot do the same for the sigilyph that floats their way. Natural, ancient protectors, his sinistea meets it with a SUCKER PUNCH before it can confront them.[break][break]

Ancient and old things fascinate him, whether object or Pokémon, so he will do his best to earn the creature’s trust later, in a contained space. He is, at least, not foolish enough to engage politely with aggressive Pokémon. Or where it will not bode well.[break][break]

“Yes, precisely.” A wry smile slides across his face. It is a joke, but it’s true enough. It feels like every other month, there’s something new and wild taking over the region.[break][break]

The silence that follows gives Hazel pause, and for a moment, he wonders if he’s overstepped an unspoken boundary between underling and superior.[break][break]

But when he moves to voice as much, Mars finally speaks. His smile returns though fainter as he looks off down the path they’re wandering. “I can understand that. Sometimes it’s what’s needed.” He was young when he first joined Rocket, back when he still lived in Galar, at the influence of his uncle. But it had never been this affiliation that was the problem.

Most people wouldn’t know. Most people have no idea of what his life had truly been like. To the public, Martín del Mar had had a comfortable upbringing in Kalos, his family being utterly unremarkable. Everything he had achieved, he had achieved on his own, and he had come to Hoenn because in Hoenn he had seen wonder and opportunity.

To every good lie there is a little bit of truth, but what is real and what is not is impossible to discern unless one knows of what hides behind the cunning smiles of a businessman.

“Oh, a Munna…”

He pauses when seeing the pink pokémon float by, having always been fond of the species. But Mars has multiple Musharna and Munna already, and of the former, more than a couple had died in his service. The sight of this Munna reminds him of them.

“That’s fair.” Though Hazel wouldn’t personally call it running. Not so much as pursuing opportunities that extended outside of the parameters of his old life.[break][break]

“They’re interesting, aren’t they?” he asks as he follows the other’s attention toward the small, floating munna. He had a musharna, himself. It typically helped him sleep whenever he was ill.[break][break]

Hazel’s glance turns curious as he eyes Mars then, head tilting slightly. “It wasn’t my specialty area, so not as much as I would like, unfortunately.”[break][break]

The gray shade of his irises brighten at the thought that Mars may very well be about to share some interesting lore with him. Enough so that he entirely misses the bronzong that floats past.

Sinnoh’s history is varied, and as it often is the case in this world, it’s also deeply tied to its mythology. Mars had spent a large portion of his life in region, he had read hundreds of books in his time there, and even he hadn’t really learned much about some of its legends until the most recent years. The worst part of it all, though? The things he hadn’t wished to learn.
