The aftermath of their sparring with Gunner Graves finds Fern and Marza reeling, but still upright. He’s down pokemon now, but Fern figures it could be worse – he could be in the same sort of shape as his work partner, after all. “No more getting shot, hm?” he teases lightly, as he dabs at the bullet grazes she’s already earned. All while knowing full well that he’s probably going to receive some bite back from that sharp tongue of hers.[break][break]

It’s to be expected, after all. There’s a reason his pockets were pre-emptively stuffed with things like small bandages and gauze packets and alcohol wipes. This is just old hat for them in terms of their routine. Marza Volchitsa gets the scrapes, he fixes her up after. Cecilia has been released again while he works, and the dragapult hovers around them– watching for anyone who might approach, no matter the side they fall on.[break][break]

So it’s her who alerts Fern to the girl sliding down one of the rocky slopes. Not that it would’ve taken very long for him to notice her with the insults hurled in their direction. As a result of his decidueye fainting, the fog has begun to creep back in as her DEFOG recedes, but it’s low for the time being.[break][break]

Fern’s hands freeze in place, and he only turns his head toward annalise henderson , squinting through his own fennec fox mask. He sighs. Loudly. “Pardon?” Clearly, he’s not going anywhere. With a wave of his hand, his dragapult floats forward, then sinks low against the fog before dissolving into it (or rather an opened portal) only to reemerge behind the fluffed up meowstic to strike out with PHANTOM FORCE.

Marza was tired. She'd never anticipated actually being tired of fighting, but then again she'd never had to deal with this much bullshit before. So much for honor in the League, huh? It said a lot that she had managed to suppress even her irritation as Fern proceeded to doctor her. It wouldn't be the first time and likely wouldn't be the last time. It was almost a little amusing even. In all likelihood, it'd also be pointless as they were far from the end of this thing. And for what, again? She'd forgotten the point of this, but that might've been due to the fact she never paid attention during the meetings.

"That's entirely up to them." She muttered irritably, not happy that their first fight had ended in a way less than agreeable. "Need to find Kuru." Stupid bird was still missing and, admittedly, it worried her. That was about as much admittance as she'd allow and only with this dumbass. "Okay, it's fine, you're ruining my unhinged look." She swatted him away, only to find themselves interrupted yet again.

At least this time, the person putting the target on wasn't half bad to look at. "Suppose we're back to it already..." She muttered, forcing herself up from slope she'd been leaning on. Regardless of Fern's doctoring, she was feeling the leg wound more than before. That paired with the physical fight and the punches taken, she was not feeling the immediate fight and for once... let Fern take the forefront. Idly, she released Kommo-o from his pokeball. "Okay, princess, we're gonna make this quick." She had a bird to find, after all. Without much ceremony, Kommo-o struck out at the opposing dragapult with CLANGING SCALES.

the meowstic rips open several portals in front of her, but not to see through them this time. instead, she fires psychic blasts into them in the heartbeats before they close. insurance for later, just like the last time they were faced against a dragapult. a little gasp escapes her when it reappears between her and her pokemon, slamming her meowstic into the dirt. tuna scrambles to her paws and whirls to face her opponent with a pained hiss.

the soundwaves resonating from Marza Volchitsa 's kommo-o's clanging scales get caught in the dragapult's ectoplasmic body and cause the ghost to burst. the dreepies of the other calzones let out a chorus of eerie laughter as the pieces of the illusory dragapult rain down into disappearing confetti.

the giggling dies out. calzone and his clones all fix their eyes on kommo-o.

Not that he has time to fret over her wounds anymore. Not with the ranger who isn't deterred by their initial offensive. Cecilia's hit lands, driving annalise henderson 's meowstic into the gravel, and though it rises back up hissing and spitting, he's pleased with the outcome. what he's less pleased with are the portals it opened up moments before. They've disappeared now, but what's to come of the energy it dumped into each one? It's tucked in the back of his mind.[break][break]

Gearing up to send Cecilia her next command, the wind kicks up again and rain patters against his face as someone else touches down on a formidably sized dragonite. "It's like they think this is a Saturday tea social," Fern grumbles irritably. No matter - he will get up this mountain regardless.[break][break]

The light weight of Ceci's body is blown back with the gusty attack from the emerging staraptor. It almost rings a bit familiar to the torrent that whipped up Kuru earlier - perhaps? There's no time to speculate, though. "Make up for the distance!" His dragapult complies, swooping high and twisting in the air before honing back on it's prior target, DRAGON DARTS blasting screeching dreepy at its head with pinpointed speed.[break][break]

Sadly, she doubted her old bird would come back to a whistle, but she had the distinct feeling the stupid buzzard wasn't dead. It took a lot more that some wind to kill off that screechy bastard, for sure. In all likelihood, Kuru had probably found something shiny to distract himself with.

Marza still couldn't believe that out of the two of them, she had been the one to break cover what with the frequency that Fern's gums flapped and words fell out. Maybe after all this time partnered up to him, he was wearing off on her. Goddamn, that was a frightening thought. "Dunno, sounds like an angry cat." The girl in question wasn't exactly intimidating and already Marza was missing the fight that the last battle had promised.

Kommo-o shook its scale, preening as it watched as the Dragapult spattered into bits of ectoplasmic goo. Yet it quickly stilled in frustration once it realized that the intended target was missed. Even more so when a new presence suddenly descended upon them. A familiar bright orange dragonite. Surely it wasn't the same that had — maybe the universe was not so unkind after all. There was no way of being certain, but Marza didn't need to be exact, she just needed a target for her fury.

The prior exhaustion slipped away, reinvigorated by the hope of a more fulfilling fight than the last. The gust of wind pushed against them, forcing her to falter back a few step. The cut on her leg stung even more, not entirely in a bad sort of way. Pain could be grounding too. She wanted to make them hurt, all the same.

Kommo-o dug its claws into the earth, resisting the gale of wind that cut through his scales. Marza cast a quick glance to Fern, who would either understand or not. That was entirely up to him. "Ko, Boom burst." An explosive barrage of noise and power rushes out from the Kommo-o, targeting all around it.

a whirlwind rips across the field. tugging winds pull at her uniform as she gives him a thankful glance, "you don't know how happy i am to see you."[break][break]tuna keeps her eyes trained on the dragapult as fern delaney commands it to close the distance. dragon darts rain down as she conjures a psychic wall to keep them away. the first dreepy is a dizzying blow to the head that slips past just as she raises it, knocking the meowstic to the floor again. her psychic shield begins to dissolve just as quickly as its drawn up without proper concentration, but the second dreepy glances her body instead of her head thanks to it. [break][break] annalise can almost feel Greyson Connors 's disappointment from somewhere down the mountainside as she reaches for her poke ball and recalls her meowstic. he told her to have faith in her partners — so she's putting her faith in ollie morales and calzone to carry the team while tuna rests. [break][break]
the raucous noise that comes from the kommo-o forces annalise to cover her ears with gritted teeth. she tries to tell her dragapult to attack, but no amount of yelling carries over the sound.

calzone takes matters into his own ghostly hands, disappearing into a phantom force as though frightened away by the grating boomburst. the remaining clones are torn apart by the shockwave as it rushes through them.

as the noise level goes down, calzone reappears, attempting to lash out at the other dragapult.

they were being made fun of, and as dense as ollie couuld be sometimes, he wasn't dense enough to ignore this.

[break][break] to his staraptor he shouts, "make cover, tabasco!"

[break][break] the bird gives a loud screech as it flaps it's wings, body blurring into several clones that surround both their trainers and the fallen meowstic. the dragon darts spurn a few of the clones through a flurry of movement, but enough remain in place to glare at the dragapult in the air.

[break][break] annalise henderson eventually recalls her meowstic, when it's psychic barrier is broken through, and ollie flashes a brief smile at his friend. "we got this."

[break][break] he winces when the boom burst echoes through the air, and he looks over to his staraptor who lets out an unpleasant screech as the damage is done to him. more copies disappear - but still, there a few still standing enough to keep up an advantage. "help him, tabs!" he says, just as the staraptor takes to the sky.

[break][break] he and his copies zoom down towards the dragapult with an aerial ace in attempt to barrage the ghost-type.

Marza shoots him a look and he...admittedly doesn't know what this particular look means. It's like when she's about to mouth back at him for saying something stupid, but he hasn't really said anything worth getting sassed at (in his not at all humble opinion.) The realization sets in a beat too late, seconds before the command.[break][break]

The opposing dragapult is on the mark - vanishing quickly as the kommo-o ripples its scales and gears up for the BOOMBURST, but Ceci is still clearly pleased at the results of her attack, and is regathering her dreepy. "Ceci, to me! Now!" This catches her attention, and she tries to vanish into a PHANTOM FORCE, but the piercing ripples of the sound explosion follow her into the portal before it closes up.[break][break]

"We really need to work on our signals," he says to Marza with a forlorn sigh, glancing over briefly before turning his attention back to the dragapult as she reemerges - disoriented by the effects of the BOOMBURST following her. She doesn't seem too worse for wear, however.

Still, there's no time for her to catch up as the other dragapult appears from hiding in much better state and slams into her, only to be directly hit from above by the staraptor's AERIAL ACE, driving her down below the rising fog. All of his quips fall by the wayside and Fern doesn't think about recalling, or releasing a secondary pokemon as he darts past Marza Volchitsa in the direction of where the dragapult fell.

"Should I just announce everything I do?" Maybe she could have done a better job of warning the other, it wasn't as if she wanted to hurt Cecilia in the process. For as much of a monster as Marza could be, she had her few begrudging exceptions to the rule. There were repercussions to everything. Leave it to Fern to make a scene of it and rush to his pokemon, forgetting the actual fight going on. Emotions were reserved for after the fight was over (anger being the only exception for her).

"Fer—" She hissed as he darted past, snapping her mouth shut on the name. She muttered a curse under her breath. "Cover him." She grumbled to Kommo-o, which sprang forward towards her partner. Circling around him to face off against the two opposing pokemon. The Kommo-o lashed out then this time at the opposing Dragapult with Clanging Scales once again.

"Fuck it." She forced herself up, having opted not to get personally involved in this fight, but clearly that was going to happen. The wound on her leg hadn't improved regardless of Fern's herbs, but she'd make do with the pain. She rushed forward then, left hook aimed for ollie morales . It was more of a distraction to keep them from focusing on her idiot partner, in all honesty. Either way, she still needed this bastard to pay for Kuru, but this didn't have anything to do with emotions.

despite the circumstances, annalise feels a twinge of pity as fern delaney rushes to his fallen dragapult. a rare rocket that actually cares about their pokemon — something she's only seen in her encounter with Isaac Merlo . her dragapult floats above them, impassive eyes trained on the duo, one moment, then gets battered to the gravel by clanging scales a moment later.[break][break]
"calzone!" she gasps out, hand to mouth. he doesn't show pain — though he doesn't seem to show much of anything in general — but his body looks pale when he picks himself up off the ground.

and that's the last she looks at him, eyes darting to the woman moving toward ollie morales . the fist thrown sparks hot anger in her chest, burning away whatever sympathy had taken root a moment before. any self defense she may have learned in her time as a ranger is thrown away for something more feral as she lunges at Marza Volchitsa .

have your angry fucking cat, she thinks, one hand reaching for a fistful of hair or mask or any sort of purchase on the grunt.

if the circumstances were different, ollie might've felt more remorse. if there wasn't a meteor hurtling towards them in space, or the threat of a potential new war breaking out, or enemies that had all kinds of pokemon at their disposal, whether it be ultrabeasts or aliens. with everything that they had heard at the latest ranger meeting, including the events of "cyberchase" as anna and various others had reported, ollie had known that he had to go into this fully prepared.

[break][break] he starts, but his words are cut off as a fist slams into his cheek. he is thrown back into concrete, vision blurry as he sees an image of annalise henderson and her garbled cries of outrage.

[break][break] tabasco lets out a screech too of rage, raising into the air and ripping a vicious wing attack. however, in his rage he is blind to the direction or the power of it. though he aims it for Marza Volchitsa , instead several gales of wind rip out from his wings and towards fern delaney and their dragapult.

Or at least enough until matters were taken care of, and he could handle his reaction privately. But this is Cecilia and that leaves a stronger impact. There’s not much that reminds Fern of home now, and the dragapult he’s had since he was no more than a gangly teenager is the biggest of his sentimentalities.[break][break]

So Fern, as a consequence for his softness, isn’t thinking about the fight anymore. Nor the purpose of their being on the mount, or even the reassurances imparted by jayden cross before this day ever came. He can hear the screech of a supremely pissed of @anna, and the sound of actual person to person scrapping, but he doesn’t look back to see what’s coming.[break][break]

Maybe he should have— though it likely wouldn’t have made much difference.[break][break]

Cecilia doesn’t come when he calls for her. Probably because the combination of multiple attacks has left her thoroughly unconscious (can’t blame her there.) What he doesn’t immediately notice through the poor weather is the edge she landed near, or the steep drop just beyond.[break][break]

He’s almost to her when the effects of the askew WING ATTACK smacks into his back and knocks Fern off of his feet. A startled yelp follows as the wind knocks out of his lungs, and forces him down despite the effort to push himself back up. If he could just recall her, it would be alright. But the gale force batters at her already prone body, damaging it further and pushing her right off the side.[break][break]

It’s uncertain if the harsh noise that comes back up to the immediate battle after the din or kommo-o’s clanging scales or the rumbling clap of Calzone’s thunder is just the howl of the dying wind from the wing attack, or from him instead.[break][break]

There’s not much tactical fight left in him—only anger. And when he lifts back up to the fight using assistance from his released haunter’s LEVITATE, he commands it to infiltrate with NIGHTMARE, mainly as a bid to give Marza Volchitsa the upper hand to pull away from annalise henderson. But the snarl on his face that’s just barely visible under his crooked mask proves he doesn’t care where on the opposing side it lands. Person or Pokémon, it doesn’t matter.
