It’s an ugly sort of satisfaction he feels when his haunter’s nightmare successfully takes root when Marza Volchitsa hoists the young ranger up by her shirt collar. It runs contrary to the degree of empathy he might be inclined to feel—it’s been scrubbed away, or maybe crowded out so that there’s only room for the anger he now feels for the sake of his lost dragapult.[break][break]

At the same time, though, he still feels winded and dizzy from the impact and knock he took from the staraptor’s wing attack. If Morticia wasn’t assisting him now, Fern is fairly certain he wouldn’t be standing on his own. The fight winks out of him just as quickly as the fury had appeared, like pinching the flicker of a candle flame to extinguish it.[break][break]

All too quickly Fern feels weary and done with this whole ordeal. But when ollie morales calls out and rallies to his teammate’s aid, Fern cannot sit by and allow his own to become a punching bag (again.)[break][break]

Instructing Morticia to deposit him beside Marza’s stunned kommo-o, he then points the haunter toward the staraptor. “Intercept with shadow punch!” Twisting forward like a missile, the violet specter barrels for the avian. Clawed hands glow with chaotic, umbral energy as she ducks below, and then drives a punch upward into its soft, downy belly— attempting to drive it up into the sky and away.[break][break]

Then his attention turns to Marza, “M, c’mon! We need to reassess!” No more Ceci, and with no Kuru in sight, their escape possibilities are a bit, mmm, how shall we saaayyy…royally fucked?

Fear formed on the young woman's face, a little unexpectedly. Marza held on stupidly at first, before finally releasing her and stumbling back a step. The blonde had clawed at her arm until it was raw. This fight had derailed, well beyond her ability to control it. A mess, to put in simpler terms. Her eyes cut to Ollie once more before strafing to the side to add distance between them. Then to the whirlwind that the stupid bird was kicking up again. Morticia seemed to have her covered tho.

"No, we need to go." No "reassessment", just leave. She knew full well it was beyond that point, even if she was the last person to ever step away from a battle. It was common sense and clearly her partner was emotionally derailed. Otherwise, she might have kept going. Kommo-o was still stunned so she returned him to his pokeball. Kuru was still missing and their only other exit was dead and gone —

Her attention was pried away then by a spark of slate gray in the sky. There was movement that was almost too fast to be followed before it was striking out at the Staraptor. One second, the over-sized pigeon was there and then it was simply gone with an ugly screech. A few dark feathers hung in the air in the place it last was. The fog obscured whatever was happening. The ugly noise that followed seemed amplified by the momentary silent before what had to be the most gleeful caw she'd ever heard and a familiar buzzard crow-hopped back into view. A plume of bloodied feathers was hanging from Kuru's beak. It crowed in a way that sounded like sadistic laughter.

"Kuru — you sick bastard." Admittedly, she was relieved to see him. "Let's get out of here." She said to Fern, not bothering to grace Ollie with a second glance as she spoke to him. "Sorry bout that. Eye for an eye, I suppose. Though, it's not likely your bird has any of those left." An astute observation, knowing her corviknight. Either way, he'd be better off fretting over the shaking cheerleader rather than going after them.

as Marza Volchitsa releases her, the ground beneath annalise begins to bubble and warp. instead of hitting the ground, she goes through it, swallowed up by the phantom force conjured up by her dragapult. it pushes her out from the earth somewhere else, somewhere away from ollie morales . her dragapult, still pale, hovers over her as the nightmare recedes like fog from her mind.
