A Togekiss was not going to be the easiest opponent for Zev's Pokémon, not with two Dark-types in his arsenal that day. But it did not matter. He figured the League would fight with the upper hand as much as possible, and he was not going to let type matching hold him back, either. At least with Cofagrigus out, he could afford his main attacker some protection.[break][break]

The flick of a wrist opened a Poké Ball and summoned forth Zev's Hydreigon. She roared at the oncoming Togekiss, WORKing herself UP into a frenzy, and leaped forward to engage.[break][break]

Zev whistled sharply. Cofagrigus followed Hydreigon, her four hands glowing. The same glow encased her Dark-type ally in a PROTECTive bubble.[break][break]

Briefly, their master allowed himself to scan the battlefield, his sharp eyes seeking an even more familiar face in the chaos — that of his younger brother, Caleb Harcourt. But the sounds of Zev's Pokémon mid-battle drew back his attention; he watched Fawley closely to see how the Ranger Captain would react to a second opponent.[break][break]

It could be worse.

The ranger captain watches the actions of the criminal, paying careful attention to his pokémon choices. He doesn’t bother with threats, snarky comments, or even flashy poses. He simply stands his ground, calm as ever when reaching for one of the green pokéballs at his belt…

In heavy contrast with her trainer’s demeanour, the roar of the Tyranitar that is then released reverberates through the ground and trees alike, calling forth a gust. The SANDSTORM created by her SAND STREAM is a powerful one. It becomes difficult to see what’s happening in its midst, and it's both pokémon and trainers alike that are buffeted by its debris. Only the Tyranitar is unaffected by it.

Used to this sort of battle conditions, Tam takes a step back and away from where the raging storm is the strongest, knowing that somewhere within it, his Togekiss is flying down to attack in response to the signal he had given it. From up above, it’s an AURA SPHERE that the Jubilee Pokémon aims towards the Hydreigon.

The Tyranitar growls menacingly, yet she too chooses to PROTECT... for now.

Owning his own Tyranitar meant Zev was familiar with what one joining the battle meant. Like Fawley, he stepped back strategically to avoid the strongest part of the sandstorm, though his outfit that day would protect him from the biting winds. His mask, too, would protect his lungs from debris.[break][break]

Hydreigon flew through the air toward the Togekiss, protected from the Aura Sphere. She grabbed at him with her secondary mouths, fangs biting into soft flesh. Then, all three mouths aimed point-blank at the Jubilee Pokémon's body, Hydreigon unleashed her HYPER VOICE. The soundwaves reverberated across the battlefield but bounced harmlessly off the protective shield around Tyranitar.[break][break]

Meanwhile, Cofagrigus retreated close to Zev, the sandstorm cutting into her spectral form and causing her to shriek with pain. With a quick gesture, she cast DISABLE on Fawley's Togekiss, intending to prevent him from using Aura Sphere for a short time.[break][break]

Jubilee and Brutal Pokémon meet in midair, draconic fangs biting through feather and flesh to take hold. The Togekiss lets out a pained cry, but she does not have the time to attempt to break away before the point-blank HYPER VOICE dulls her senses. Drops of her blood mingle with the sandstorm.

The next attack on her part is blind and desperate, but it is effective. While the Hydreigon still takes hold, she pushes downwards and against it, EXTREME SPEED suddenly being used to torpedo down to the ground.

The Tyranitar charges as well at that very moment, BULLDOZING the Coffin Pokémon.
[break][break]
Tam’s eyes narrow. Familiar with Cofagrigus as he is, he knows doing this will cause Lily’s ability to change momentarily, but that does not matter when the SANDSTORM is already raging. The Togekiss’ situation is more of a problem.

The EXTREME SPEED did exactly as Fawley's Togekiss hoped. Hydreigon, unable to dislodge herself before impact, screamed in agony as the two Pokémon slammed into the earth. Bones snapped. Her mouths sprayed blood.[break][break]

Screeching with rage, Hydreigon bit down into the Togekiss' body, though Fairy-type feathers padded against the vicious CRUNCH.[break][break]

Zev did not flinch. His impassive gaze swept to his Cofagrigus, carried off by the Tyranitar's attack until she smacked into a nearby tree. Though she remained aloft, her form staggered through the air to rejoin the battle. Her hands moved in a hypnotic pattern, and a DARK PULSE shooting from them at the Tyranitar.[break][break]

The crunching and snapping of bones is rendered inaudible by the sound of the raging SANDSTORM, and yet, even if he can’t hear it, Tam knows what kind of damage to expect after witnessing his Togekiss’ dive. He frowns, and then, when seeing glittering specks amongst the sand, he takes a deep breath.

It’s never easy, is it?

”I’m sorry, Flapjack.”
[break][break]
Weakened and pained, the Togekiss also suffers due to its own attack. Blood pours out of wounds that the dragon keeps on mercilessly digging its fangs into, red staining the soil of Littleroot Town. Without the strength to even attempt to free itself, the Jubilee Pokémon does the only thing it can do: its wings flap helplessly one last time, and with a cry of agony, a FAIRY WIND is summoned to mingle with the SANDSTORM called forth by the Tyranitar.

It’s with rage that Lily responds to the Togekiss’ pain, her roaring louder than ever. She approaches the Cofagrigus one more time, and although the DARK PULSE stings and is enough to cause her to pause, it also seems to increase the Tyranitar’s anger.

There’s a sudden chill, the air becoming gelid.
[break][break]
”LILY!” Tam warms, but it’s too late.
[break][break]
An AVALANCHE falls upon them.

Zev's Hydreigon was so close to death herself that the Fairy Wind ripped through her flesh, tearing away the remnants of her life force. Her body went limp, though long fangs remained embedded within the Togekiss' corpse. At least Hydreigon had killed a powerful Pokémon owned by a Ranger Captain, even with her type disadvantage.[break][break]

At least she hadn't been completely useless.[break][break]

Their deaths allowed Zev to focus on those Pokémon who still lived — just in time to witness Fawley's Tyranitar bring down an Avalanche upon all their heads. Zev backed up rapidly into a thick tree trunk as the snow crashed down, burying Cofagrigus and the two corpses.[break][break]

Thankfully, his Ghost-type wriggled out of the snow, her spectral body allowing her to rise through the thick layer. The slowness of her movements, however, meant she was close to fainting. Another powerful attack such as that would seriously injure her.[break][break]

Sensing the same, Cofagrigus used PROTECT on herself, then cast DISABLE on her adversary.[break][break]

Specks of sand mingle with snowflakes when the AVALANCHE falls upon them. Even through it, the SANDSTORM rages on, buffeting all it touches while simultaneously increasing the Tyranitar’s own defences. Lily shakes the snow off, unscathed, but having caused harm to the ghost clearly does little to diminish her anger.

When the Cofagrigus appears and PROTECTS itself, there’s a low snarl. Back spikes raised as if hackles vibrate with the guttural sound, and even though she knows well that such a barrier might just be impenetrable right now, she still readies an attack.

A mega stone can be seen on the ring around her tail, but it will remain unused unless Tam commands otherwise. The command the ranger captain gives is much different:

”Swing.”
[break][break]
A savage attack that will strike everything in her path. The pokémon may be able to protect itself, but can it protect its trainer at the same time?
[break][break]
Lily roars, responding to the command. Just as Tam steps out of her path, she charges forward, and with a BRUTAL SWING of her tail, she aims for both the Cofagrigus and Zev Harcourt alike.

Tam has had enough.

For as long as Zev had known Tam Fawley, the Ranger Captain left him with an impression of total indifference, an aloofness that nearly matched the hitman's own, though Zev always hid his beneath a careful façade. But he had never observed Fawley to be cold, merely neutral, even around his fellow Rangers.[break][break]

Naturally, sporadic and brief conversations at a bar barely revealed the true nature of a person. Yet for whatever reason, Zev had not expected his opponent to order such a powerful attack that could lay waste to a whole battlefield. He had only enough time to raise his arms to protect his head as the Tyranitar's tail came swinging.[break][break]

Energy shimmered and flashed as it connected — not with Zev, but with Cofagrigus' protective shield as she jumped between the Tyranitar and her master. Relief flooded Zev then, even as his heart continued to race at a hundred miles per minute from the close encounter. He opened his mouth to issue a counterattack when the most unexpected, miraculous thing occurred.[break][break]

"Hey!"[break][break]

The shout cut through the din of battle, a familiar voice that surfaced nearly three decades of memory. Zev turned his head and spotted none other than Caleb Harcourt, standing at the edge of the snow-covered ground, the winds of the sandstorm whipping at his uniform.[break][break]

A different emotion filled Zev as a second spike of adrenaline flooded his veins. Triumph. His gamble had paid off. Here, at last, his prey stood before him, the brother he had lost — and given up everything to find.[break][break]

Bloodlust has never suited Tam. Even now, after having seen his Togekiss fall, and with the scent of blood lingering in the air amongst dust and snow, it’s not revenge that he seeks. What is it, then? To bring down a dangerous criminal, perhaps? To bring him to justice? To prevent more pokémon from dying?

The command telling Lily to repeat her attack rests at the tip of his tongue, a sharp and cold ”Again!” almost spoken. The sound of Caleb Harcourt’s voice interrupts him at the last second.

What is he doing here? Why is he acting like he knows this person?
[break][break]
Sky blue eyes narrow when looking at the cadet, and at the same time, the Tyranitar lets out a rumbling growl, watching Zev Harcourt and his Cofagrigus.

A decision is quickly made.
[break][break]
”Fine, but don’t do anything stupid, Caleb.”
[break][break]
He decides to trust.
[break][break]
Lily is called back to her pokéball’s confines, and with one final look at the masked stranger, Tam rushes back to the theatre, leaving his fallen Togekiss behind beneath snow and sand alike. There’s a lot left for him to do and too many Rockets that are probably already making their way into the theatre.
