Yet another afternoon behind sterile walls.

BARNABY FINCH sat reclined in a laboratory chair, as comfortable as could be expected considering its vinyl and plastic construction, stroking the head of his beloved Bijou. The lavender colored NINETALES leaned into his touch, savoring the affection - that was, until, the sound of a door being opened goaded her attentions away.

Her eyes blinked open, her ears pricked forward.

Joining them was just the researcher Barnaby had been waiting for. Ceri Glynn strolled through the threshold of her lab with all the confidence in the world, incubator in hand. Looking at it, the egg appeared to be the same one they'd experimented on before, with no discernable differences since the last time he'd visited. Perhaps that would change today?

Lifting the same hand that was used to pet Bijou, Barnaby waved as Ceri approached. "What's the plan for today? Another Springtide Storm treatment for our little egg here?"

The egg itself has not changed, but the incubator has. Superficially, it’s subtle enough to mostly go unnoticed, but the truth of the matter is that this is exactly where Ceri’s specialisation in biotechnology comes in. A few changes had been made to the incubator over the past week. Most important of all is the MEGA STONE that now lies clearly embedded in it – a constant source of Infinity energy.

”Hey, hey! Yup! Exactly! I’m mostly trying to see what will happen to the egg if I expose it to controlled yet significant amounts of Infinity Energy overtime. I need to adapt a few things, but it’ll only be a minute.” Ceri tells Bee with a bright smile when stepping into the testing chamber.

It’s only a simplified explanation, of course, but she’d rather not get too technical or throw too much jargon at the executive.

”How have you been?” Small talk, really. Her attention is on the incubator and her tablet, not on him.

Cobalt eyes followed Ceri as she made her way to the testing chamber adjacent to the laboratory space. Barnaby didn't immediately rise from his seat and go after her, however. Instead, he took a moment to mull over what she had just explained to him.

Infinity Energy. What caused it to be so powerful? So transformational? Barnaby wasn't sure, but he supposed that was what researchers like Ceri were being paid to discover, understand, and disseminate to the organization.

Leaning forward a few seconds later, Barnaby used the momentum to exit his chair and follow after Ceri Glynn as she entered the chamber. Bijou came behind at a close heel.

"Hmm. As good as could be expected with death looming over us." 99943 METENO was on his mind a lot lately. Enough that he continued the small talk by adding, "What do you think of this meteoroid, Ceri?"

Despite what people might believe based on her peppy attitude, Ceri is not one to ignore her problems. An apocalyptic threat looms over them, that much is true. People she deeply cares for like Naomi Sato are being sent to said threat to mine it for unknown resources. And, Ceri herself? Ceri herself has been assigned with aiding with the preparations for the “Meteno mission” when there’s so much she’d rather be doing.

The meteor is constantly in her mind.

”I think calibrating ships to land on a moving chunk of space rock enroute to crush us is a pain.” She responds without missing a beat, beaming at BARNABY FINCH.

There’s a light laugh then, and although it’s something Bee may not notice because her attention quickly returns to the screen on the incubator, the joy does not reach her gaze.

”It better be full of cool, undiscovered alien pokémon to make this worthwhile. I wouldn’t mind an Ultra Beast or two to study, but that’s a stretch.”

Mostly, she thinks she’d rather the world doesn’t end before she finishes her doctorate.

There’s too much left to do; too much left to both discover and create.

"That does seem like a monumental pain." Barnaby agreed, folding his arms over his chest. He noticed Ceri's light laugh, the smile that didn't reach her eyes, but chalked it up to her feeling a similar skepticism as he did.

"I'd like to think we wouldn't invest so much of our resources unless there was something absolutely amazing on that chunk of rock..." Wishful thinking on his part, to be sure.

"... but I suppose we won't know until we're up there. Hopefully the gamble pays off and you can experiment on some new alien Pokémon to your heart's content." Here Barnaby gave his own light laugh, something to lift the mood. He didn't mention that they might not even get the chance to come together and continue their experiments in the future. Didn't mention the near-guarantee that this meteor could kill them all.

Now was not the time to dwell on those kinds of thoughts.

"Is the egg ready for more Infinity Energy now?" He asked, his tone inquisitive.

On the bright side, it’s not like she has to divide her time between university and Rocket on these supposed final days of the region. Things had been pretty crazy at Slateport U ever since the dome first appeared (as they had been all over Hoenn), and with people beginning to evacuate, classes are far from the current priority.

She spends most of her time at Sootopolis these days, going from lab to lab.

After entering one final sequence and carefully watching the data displayed on the screen, she steps away from the incubator – content with knowing that these settings will hold up against the might of SPRINGTIDE STORM.

”Yep! We can get started on your mark. Try to maintain it for a bit if possible.”

A question lingers in her mind, but for now, she does not ask.

As Ceri fiddled with the incubator, Barnaby leaned in a little closer, inspecting the machine. From this vantage point he was able to notice the added Mega Stone, although he couldn't quite make out what specific type it was.

"Bijou, get it place." He instructed his NINETALES, who immediately peeled away from his side to circle around the incubator. Barnaby stepped well away from the egg and the fox, knowing that SPRINGTIDE STORM had quite a wide radius of attack.

When he felt he was a good enough distance away, Barnaby nodded his head in assent. On cue a curious energy began to well from Bijou, tinted a lighter pink than her coat, while glowing petals whirled around the chamber. She had heard Ceri's request and this time extended the duration of the attack - without sacrificing intensity, of course.

The Mega Stone belongs to Ceri’s own Toxtricity, something which she would have shared with Bee if he had asked. See, technically, it’s Rocket’s property: ages ago, when she first became a researcher, she requested it for the sake of testing the effects of the potent poison of mega evolved Toxtricity. It only makes sense to use it now, right?

She stands at a safe distance away from the SPRINGTIDE STORM’s range, watching Bee’s Ninetales for a moment before turning her gaze towards the tablet. The move is as potent as ever, but the incubator endures just as she had designed it to do.

”Have they assigned you to one of the three yet?” She asks while the storm of petals rages. She means the missions: Meteno, Littleroot, or Mount Pyre. Most Rockets would be going to one of them. Ceri herself, though? Thankfully, her skillset calls for her duty lying in helping with ground control for the Meteno team. She'd do terribly in a battlefield.

Barnaby watched as his Pokémon continued in her attack. His eyes remained focused and looking forward, even when Ceri Glynn asked her question about the upcoming conflict.

"Mount Pyre." He answered succinctly, though his tone remained conversational. Of the three locations, it was the one Barnaby was most familiar with, luckily enough. It was also the one Martín del Mar would be at as well. Was that a coincidence? Or had the underboss pulled strings for them to at least share the same battlefield? It wouldn't surprise him if that were that case. And if it was... BARNABY FINCH was grateful for it.

"What about you? I'd say..." He cast a sidelong glance her way, smirking. "Meteno, if I had to guess."

Mount Pyre. Ceri isn’t particularly familiar with Bee’s specialisation (beyond having interesting pokémon for her to study and gather samples from, that is), so she can’t help but wonder exactly why he’s going to Mount Pyre of all places. Is he particularly stealthy? Is he going to be there for defence? She had heard Cillian Quinn will be there, which probably means it will be a tough battle.

Her gaze falls upon the Ninetales’ SPRINGTIDE STORM as it begins to fade away.

”Hell no. I’m too young, too pretty, and too damn smart to risk dying in space.” She responds when asked if she’s going to join the Meteno group, a smirk tugging at her lips. ”I’m helping with it, but I’m staying right here where I’m most needed.”

Ceri is decidedly not made for field work, yet Bee is right: they could have probably sent her to Meteno, considering both head scientists are part of the team.

She wonders who decided she should stay here.
[break][break]
”Okay, I think we’re done.” She takes a few steps back towards the incubator and pauses, turning to look at the executive. ”Good luck out there, Bee.”
