Quick strides bring the gym leader before Route 111, his Sobble by the name of Jonesy tagging along for the events of the day. Friend and councilwoman Penelope Livy had seemed to harbor a growing interest in capturing and training pokemon. Having history as a ranger and trainer, Derek figured he'd offer himself as something of a guide to help her locate some choice fire types she was interested in.

When they finally reached her, the Sobble runs ahead and greets Penny excitedly. She was a nice person, much kinder than some of the other ladies in Hoenn Jonesy had to be in the same room as. Heated discussions and arguments that made him uncomfortable enough that he could have cried.

Derek can't help but chuckle softly, offering a small chest-high wave as he approached. "I'd ask if you're well, but you showing is telling enough." The events upon Mt. Pyre would not be too soon forgotten, and for good reason. He just hoped Penny could help to rally Hoenn and the League into a better age.

It'd been a while since she'd been out here, in the great outdoors, searching for another pokemon to add to her party. But after the events of Mt Pyre, as well as the promises for future conflict resting along the horizon, Penelope knew she'd have to prepare herself better.

"True, true," she chuckled softly, though, it wasn't much of a joke. There were many who were much worse off than she was, and while Penelope managed to escape with her skin still tethered to her body, it'd be many months before those others could say the same. "Glad to see you're still kickin', though. And you too." She looked down at the small sobble, giving him a warm grin. "Hoenn's best-gotta stay at tip-top shape."

"Hoenn's best? You hear that?" He asks, but the Sobble's attention is clearly diverged elsewhere.

The wild Pignite that came barreling forth to HEAT CRASH on their little party here was quickly met with a WATER PULSE, extinguishing it's fiery assault and sending it reeling. Jonesy followed up on his attack while their adversary was confused, dishing out a SUCKER PUNCH that ensured the wild pig would be of no further hindrance to anyone.

Jonesy seemed to seek further praise, but Derek only offered a gentle pat on the head. There was something he was meaning to ask. "By the way, how have your meetings been as of late? Anything bad?"

With Hoenn saved, the idea that there was still any chaos about Penny's workplace obviously spelled trouble. The gym leader didn't think much of this 'Kyurem' CIAN MAHER mentioned, but getting a read on her side might be a lot more telling of the situation they were in.

The question had almost immediately evoked a natural grimance from the councilwoman. To most, she'd try to keep her expression as placid as possible, but this was Derek. Petalburg's tenure folk hero. If anyone knew the burden of responsibility, it'd be him.

"You know how it is," She sighed, sending out her Riolu out from his ball. Kid needed some training under his belt. "We're always preparing for the next disaster."

And, unfortunately, this one was just around the corner.

From the corner of her eye, she could see her Riolu slam down on an unexpecting Lavitar with a heavy METAL CLAW. She finished it off with a simple pokeball.

in the meantime, a rogue kabutops approaches. a maractus it loosed from it's ball, unleashing a leech seed while the kabutops attempted a rock throw. it hurt, but gradually the war of attrition swung in their favor. the kabutops eventually fell, allowing derek to collect it with a spare pokeball.
