What would have happened? Zev had imagined that scenario a dozen times or more since leaving Littleroot.[break][break]

"Caleb was ready to fight me himself. He'd even drawn his knife."[break][break]

Never in their lifetimes had Caleb ever challenged Zev like that before. The notion made Zev's blood boil anew. Seated in that chair next to Isaac's hospital bed, Zev's whole body tensed, his hands curling into white knuckled fists.[break][break]

But his anger was not directed at Caleb that time. No, it was directed at the League for what they'd done to him.[break][break]

"I'd have subdued him, of course. Caleb has never won against me in a spar, and in a fight with real weapons, I wouldn't relent." That much was true. "I'd have taken him back here to see if our scientists could reverse the League's brainwashing."[break][break]

Zev forced himself to relax, slowly uncurling his fingers and stretching them out over the ends of the chair's arms. By Arceus, he needed a smoke.[break][break]

In response to Isaac's other question, Zev nodded. "From what I'm hearing, yes. I wasn't there to see it, since I was underground."

Putting two and two together painted an ugly picture. He wholeheartedly believed that Caleb wasn't in his right state of mind. And yet, despite that, he went out of his way to hurt him personally. What would he have done if brainwashing was ruled out, and Caleb's defiance was his own will?[break][break]

Isaac thought back to the Ashley Shepard sleeping in the hospital's other bed. He had put Isaac in a similar boat; hard feelings, heated words, and violence between two people that saw each other as family. Ash had hurt him in ways he hadn't even believed possible. Isaac had been so tempted to ask what the fuck was wrong with him and stagger away. And then he saw the haunted look in Ash's eyes, and realized how well and truly Not Himself he was.[break][break]

If he just walked away, or hurt Ash how Ash had hurt him? The man, his beloved brother, wouldn't be alive right now.[break][break]

Even to that small, small list of people he cared for, Zev just wasn't the same. Even for the vanishingly small number of people that he loved, Zev would always be the same. Briefly, Isaac wondered what would ever happen if he crossed Zev, or if he outlived his usefulness. Was a window open? The hospital room suddenly felt so, so cold.[break][break]

"I'd ask if you think you're going to see him again. But something tells me you're already planning on it, aren't you?"[break][break]

Following his encounter with Caleb at Littleroot, brainwashing was the only explanation Zev could accept for his brother's actions. It was a conclusion he'd reached in retrospect, not during the heat of battle. At Littleroot, Zev's desire to hurt Caleb, to punish him, had been borne from raw, unbridled pain at what he viewed as the worst betrayal. In those moments, Zev had subconsciously acknowledged the truth of Caleb's words: that Caleb had left, willingly, and abandoned Zev.[break][break]

But once the action was over and Zev had time to process what had transpired, his brain found it could not. The possibility of Caleb having his own agency to defy his brother was one that Zev, with all his rational thought, could not accept. It was a reality that defied one of Zev's own making, so it could not ever be true.[break][break]

The League had brainwashed Caleb into defiance, manipulating his emotions to make him think his will was his own. That was Zev's conclusion. It was more sinister and subtle than mere kidnapping. And it was more palatable than the truth.[break][break]

"Of course," he replied. "Now that I know the real nature of Caleb's situation, I have to meet him again. I'm his older brother. He is my responsibility."[break][break]

Warm words coming from anyone else, but chilling coming from Zev.[break][break]

"To that end, I've accepted a promotion as a Beast. Gavin offered it to me just a few minutes ago, when we spoke in his office. I'll be involving myself more in Rocket's operations, so that means we'll be busier than ever. Once you recover, of course."[break][break]

The implication should be obvious to Isaac. We're a team. Or, in Zev's terms, You're one of mine.
