Locke let Isaac guide the way, giving the remains of his tent one last sad glance before abandoning it completely.

"There's no point trying to stay outside now," he said morosely. "Even if those two don't come back there's probably other bears around somewhere…"

But getting to the next city would take the rest of the night, which would mean foregoing sleep entirely. It wouldn't be the first time, but this was the worst time of year to be short on rest…

[attr="class","skullbody"]Isaac's campsite wasn't in much better shape. His tent was now little more than a piece of clawed-up cloth surrounded by the splintered remains of poles. His backpack had gotten dragged along, too, but luckily for him there was little in his possessions. All of the food he'd brought had been messily devoured, but his equipment (and, most importantly, his Pokeballs) were all still in place. That got a sigh of relief out of Isaac.[break][break]

Still, circumstances weren't ideal for Locke. Outside was a risk. At a city would require them to set out for an entire night's trek. They were so at the end of their rope that they considered sleeping with the spirits. Hearing that, Isaac's heart dropped.[break][break]

Before he knew it, he was giving Locke a tight, protective hug. "It's not gonna come to that, damnit," he promised. "One way or another, we're making it through the night. So no giving up on me, y'hear?"[break][break]

Wait. Nobody else was nearly as concerned as he was. Sure, they probably weren't having flashbacks to Ashley Shepard laying on Mt. Pyre, broken, grieving, and ready to die. But it was occurring to Isaac that he might have misread the situation some. Stupid grief, playing tricks on him like that.[break][break]

He pulled back from the hug, shooting Locke a quizzical look. "Wait, what exactly do you mean by that?"

At least one man's roughness could be another he/they's gain. Locke wasn't just camping in this area for shits and giggles. He was also scoping out the location of an abandoned house, ditched the frenzy following the meteor. It was free for all to attend, an invitation that ghosts and psychics took up with gusto. If any humans wanted to live there, they'd find themselves surrounded by a litany of uninvited roommates.[break][break]

"Huh. Can't believe you meant that literally," Isaac mused. "Well, hey! Guess that means you're not being put out for the night after all. And luckily for you, you've got one of the region's best ghostbusters backing you up." He'd investigated what was either a haunting or a gas leak with Ruby Garcia. He'd witnessed Cillian Quinn literally kill a ghost. And his exploits with Ashley Shepard in a haunted house were the stuff of legend.[break][break]

"C'mon. Let's get you over there." Isaac's back straightened. A daring grin spread across his face. The spark in his eye had ignited right back up, even if his eyepatch covered its better half. "Even if we're not able to get you a room for the night, we might as well see what we're gonna be dealing with, eh?"[break][break]

Some people knew the meaning of the word impossible. Isaac Merlo was not one of them.
