it's only a few days since the incident. people are still licking their wounds and grieving their losses. kyle's not the type to be slowed down by it though, not because he's cold, but because there's no time to rest.

mt. pyre's peak was both popular for people to revisit after the clash between two factions, as well as a place avoided by the public for the memories that bring ache to their hearts. it's always a coin flip on which day reflects a side of reality, but fate smiles on the two as they reach the place of ingress for their experiments.

kyle plays with games on his phone as he waits the arrival of the guest of honor. the man blessed by the unown themselves as per the visit on the cloud joins the champion in their expedition for today.

it's a wonder why he hasn't been invited to aqua yet, but kyle just assumes it's because unown weren't as rare as other legendary pokemon of supernatural powers.

a shake of a pokeball right from his hip alerts kyle to the presence of an avatar. he looks up from the screen of his phone just in time to give the ceo a casual wave as the mist clears up a bit.

99943 METENO had been successfully teleported away from Hoenn. Crisis averted! The world had been saved! Most people would take the following days to celebrate and relish in the wonder that is surviving to live another day. People like Mars and kyle lopez don’t get to have such luxuries. Or, maybe it’s just that they don’t want them.

One crisis averted just means having to prepare for the next, because while most people may be willingly ignorant of it, the fact is that as long as the DRK TRIAD exists, they’ll likely try to destroy Hoenn again. Team Rocket, League, even those who claim to believe in the foolish lie that is neutrality… the one thing they all have in common is that the grand majority of them don’t want to die.

And so, here he is, one of Team Rocket’s underbosses meeting Hoenn’s champion near the peak of Mount Pyre (not that Kyle knows about that part, of course). All because Martín del Mar, POG Bank’s CEO, had publicly promised he’d do everything in his power to make Hoenn a better place and had actually meant it.

Everything in his power means something much different now that the Unown’s blessings are with him, and it’s the Unown that speak to him of the champion’s presence long before Mars reaches his side – one of them spying on him from up above. An Unown-H. The same one that levitates next to Mars when he returns Kyle’s casual wave.

the phone gets shoved back to his pocket.

"first things first though. can we take a recap on what we're doing?"

it's poorly worded, but what kyle meant can be inferred from his statement regardless. the last time they attempted it went awry since they just winged it. maybe back up plans can be set up this time.

"the unown you got from the cloud... you have some sort of control over them now, right?"

it wasn't a secret what had transpired during that event. some sort of blessing has been bestowed to mars, and he wouldn't be surprised if the extent of it wasn't fully explored.

"aside from opening portals, which i guess they can do, can they also, you know, close them up? we have kyurem and necrozma out there, after all."

while palkia is a possibility, there's also a chance that its behavior back then differs to now after it's been freed from the drk triad's control. it's still a gamble, however, since there's no telling if it would've acted like that naturally anyways.

For a man who had once decided to just try to open a wormhole in a space-time distortion, Kyle shows an unexpected degree of caution this time. Truth be told, Mars is glad for it, because these are things he too had considered, and why he hadn’t just tried to open portals over and over until his Unown did as he pleased — there are dangerous possibilities.

”I can communicate with them, yes.” He admits, since that’s more accurate than saying he can control the Unown. It’s more like they’re allied with him, in a sense; like they choose to let him make use of their power. The Unown-H stares at the champion. ”Remember the Star Soirée? Unown have always been able to close rifts, but…”

He pauses then, thinking of the barrier Unown had created to keep Team Rocket away from the realm within the Tree of Life. Had that been their own power or that of the DRK Triad?

There’s a sigh.

”Necrozma, Kyurem, and all of that are exactly why I haven’t done much testing on my own. With you here, there’s a failsafe I don’t usually have. I don’t exactly go around opening portals left and right.” There’s a slight smirk at that, well aware that many would do as much and have also done so multiple times. ”I find that they work best when they’re given a clear destination. Potentially, the Unown Report could help us with that.”

kyle folds his arms and tries to evaluate limits of his pokemon's capabilities based on what he has experienced so far.

"if my solgaleo knew how to navigate dimensions before, it certainly can't now," he concludes. "it's like the pathing of each wormhole got rewired after palkia has been released from the drk triad, if you get what i mean."

if it was a system, the computer just experienced a reboot and has entered a clean state. it's the reset of a roguelite and while every scenario was still in the game, the way to navigate towards each of them has been randomized.

even coordinates for sea!hoenn and kyurem's realm has been wiped.

"do you think you can find the way back to the cloud with it?"

"Hmm... That'd make sense." Mars considers Kyle's comment for a moment, musing out loud. "Based on what we've seen and on what Maldacena told us, our universe is unstable, which would make Ultra Space around it unstable too. Perhaps it's changing in Palkia's attempt to restore things to the way they should be."

At this point, is the Spatial Pokémon even capable of that or is their universe beyond salvation? Mars has never been much for being hopeful, but he finds himself truly and properly hoping for the former option. Hoenn needs to survive.

As for the Cloud...

"Logic says it should be possible, right? The Cloud is our universe's backup, so it must be connected to it in some way. Maybe Porygon are part of the key to getting there..." Or maybe just more Unown. He can hear the whispers of the Report's entry:

"curiosity," he answers. "if anything, it's a test how much has changed since then. not like they could hate my existence more than they already do."

knowledge is a weapon. kyle wouldn't be interested in learning otherwise, but he needed something to help him piece things together in case it comes up in one of his responsibilities.

it's for his own convenience and not for the region, he tells himself.

"alright, get them ready," he tells the unown trainer. he turns to his solgaleo afterwards, speaking in a much more casual tone. "and you can try getting us there, right?"

this wasn't like the trip to ultra space where a misstep caused an inter-dimensional war between two worlds, nor was it a field trip to sea!hoenn.

he hops on his solgaleo, inviting his guest atop of it. with the assistance of the unown and his solgaleo's ability to travel through ultra wormholes, they open one up where the rifts are unstable.

their destination: the cloud.

the trip leads to nowhere. maybe the universe was really reset and every route they know now leads to uncharted land. kyle had seen it happen when they crashed near oldale, and this was just the confirmation he needed.

it was uneventful for the hype they built up for it, but it wasn't entirely uneventful. not seeing something is still information, as it still clears a bit of the fog-of-war.

does clearing it actually yield useful news for them? kyle's not entirely sure. everything was difficult to wrap his head around that he's not even sure if keeping notes would be useful. one day they're here, and the next, a new study disproves the recent discovery.

at least they're out of the wormhole now, of which kyle is still entirely unaware of its effects to people.
