Over a year ago, after Team Rocket had occupied Sootopolis, Mars had stepped into fern delaney’s shop as Tuesday, identified himself as one of Rocket’s admins, and made him an offer to join the syndicate. He had helped train the forger, and now, after all this time, Fern is the one who stands before him as admin.

But it’s not Tuesday that had called Fern to the secret training facilities beneath Casino Starlight.

The disguise is gone, and instead of the blond, it’s Underboss Martín del Mar who greets him. Here he does not need to hide his identity, for the training facilities are meant only for Team Rocket’s use, and their security is impeccable. As one would expect of the banker, he’s clad in a bespoke and perfectly-tailored suit, yet in his hands there is a tablet at which he glances.

”I call you here because MAGMA records show you’re in possession of a Tera Orb. Since the technology came from Meteno, we don’t know much about the intricacies of their use.” He explains calmly. Amusingly enough, it had been Mars himself who broke into Mossdeep’s Space Center months ago, stealing the first information they obtained about the crystals on the meteor’s surface. ”We’re here to learn more about those intricacies.”

There’s no scientific equipment in sight. In fact, they stand at opposite ends of a pokémon battle arena.

Before calling out his own pokémon, Mars looks at Fern for a moment.

”I believe congratulations are in order, by the way. I have high expectations of you.” There’s a smirk then, marked by a certain pride. His expectations had always been high, after all. They both know that.

“Hello, sir,” their greeting, though not lacking necessary formality, is still rather chipper as they enter the training facility housed beneath Casino Starlight.[break][break]

“It’s good to see you.” It’s almost a bit odd to see him without the donned visage of Tuesday. Maybe it would be a little nostalgic, reminiscent of their early trials with the underboss. But the lack of disguise also promotes a sense of belonging to something, and for that, Fern is grateful.[break][break]

Their chin tilts upward in a quiet ah of understanding. “Yes, that is the case.” The Tera Orb finds its way from pocket to hand, held up in indication. Bit of a celebratory gift to himself, really, though he hadn’t yet had the opportunity to really utilize it yet. “It’ll be a learning experience for the both of us, then.”[break][break]

Fern grins, easily so in a way that could be interpreted as sheepish, but is really just a bit more nonchalant than anything else. “Been a bit hectic as of late, is all.”[break][break]

Of course it has—the reasoning of which, Mars touches upon next. Fern has enough wherewithal to behave humbly about it; though this is an achieved goal, it is still a daunting one now that it’s actually been placed in his hands. “Ah, well— I thank you, and the rest of Rocket, for the opportunity.” They lift one arm and curl it in a can do sort of flex. “Just takes the right amount of moxie.”[break][break]

And they’ve got it, as far as they’re concerned.[break][break]

As if eager to meet those held expeditions, Fern wastes no time in releasing a hisuian typhlosion from her ball. “Nimuë is outfitted for two different typings, depending on what you’d like to see. I hadn’t expected the shards to be variant depending on that, but I figured perhaps it would be useful to see the difference.”

The smile that tugs at Mars’ lips is as calm as it is mild, one that seems perfectly natural and comes with ease, yet does so very little to reveal what he thinks. Even without a disguise, his true thoughts and feelings remain only to be known by him – the irony of his perfect poker face being that he despises gambling.

Nothing is a gamble about this.

Not fern delaney being admin, nor their presence in these underground facilities.

”Moxie, huh? I like that.” The smile shifts into a smirk, and when the Typhlosion variant is released from her pokéball, golden eyes inspect the pokémon from where he stands. ”Hmm… So it’s compatible with distortion pokémon too. That’s a good sign.”

On a personal note too. Mars’ own ace is one of them, after all.

He takes note on his tablet.
[break][break]
”My general line of thinking is to try to apply what we know is true for mega evolution and z-moves to terastellization and see if it works in the same way. When a pokémon MEGA EVOLVES, they’re healed from all previous status ailments, which can be really useful if you have them mega evolve at the right time. So…” He reaches for one of the minimised Luxury Balls clipped to his belt, and from it, a glorious Blastoise is released. She stands tall and proud, a mega stone shimmering on the bracelet at her wrist.

”Calliope here will inflict a mild FREEZE, and we’ll see if it fades when you terastellize. The type is your choice”

That’s all the warning he gives. The Blastoise’s cannons are readied, their aim impeccable, and when the underboss clicks his tongue, a gelid ICE BEAM is shot towards the Typhlosion.

Fern can’t help but let a hand flip through their hair. “Glad we agree,” they chirp airily as their smirk mirrors the underboss’ own. Fern has never lacked for chutzpah, let the record show. “Seems that way. Though I’ve not tested the orb itself, she didn’t have any adverse reactions to being exposed to either crystal.”[break][break]

“Right. Seems like a sound wager,” Fern replies, though they’re nowhere near as scientifically minded. Truly, a testament to the sentiment ‘fuck around and find out’ when it comes to these sorts of scenarios. He needs to be better about this, though, hence his agreement in showing up to the summons.[break][break]

They are quick to evaluate the blastoise when released. Though the idea is that terastellization might further strengthen the typhlosion’s defenses, she still looks like a formidable opponent. Of the two shards…ghost it is.[break][break]

Nim looks as if she is going to dodge whatever comes her way, but then turns back toward him warily, and Fern nods at her. “Take the hit.” If the theory holds, she has nothing to be terribly concerned with. Only a brief freezer burn, he figures. Though given her natural body heat, it won’t be too damaging to begin with.[break][break]

Dutifully, the typhlosion listens to their command–in that moment, Fern finds themself grateful that they have been working with her steadily as of late, honing that sense of working trust. She also likely knows that she will be rewarded with apples afterward.[break][break]

Ice crackles up and hardens around her, wicking off of her warm fur at first, but the longer the ICE BEAM is leveled at her, the more she freezes over until no amount of internal thermal energy can thaw out the chill.[break][break]

“Guess I’m up then,” Fern chimes as the tera orb rolls in their palm and their fingers close around it. They glance across the training floor to Mars for a moment, though. “Unless you’d like to document anything else first?”

The ICE BEAM strikes true with the aid of fern delaney’s command for his pokémon not to dodge, and its frost that begins to rapidly coat the phantasmagoric Typhlosion’s body, effectively FREEZING her as if she were one of the pokémon which corpses now lie encased in ice near Oldale Town. Except, of course, for the fact that this ice is meant to melt where Kyurem’s does not. In fact, if Mars’ theory is correct, it should fade away in a mere moment.

”All you. Don’t worry, it’s all being documented already.” He vaguely gestures upwards, for cameras are clearly visible at all four corners of the secure training room. It’s all being recorded for M.A.G.M.A’s researchers to analyse later on. Knowing this, Mars smirks at the admin. ”Better put on a good show, no?”

He gives a command of his own, this time with one short whistled note. It’s never words, but the Blastoise understands all the same, and so she PROTECTS herself against whatever attack may come her way.

”Let’s have a look at that terastellization.”

Kind of a weird name for it, isn't it? Considering the crystals are extraterrestrial.

Fern grins, waving a hand—a flourish, per usual, as their glance flits up to the camera. He waves, fingers wiggling. “Of course, it would be boring, otherwise.” A show is what they will provide—so long as this Tera-hype doesn’t prove to be a bust.[break][break]

Alright, let’s see what all the hubbub is about, he thinks to himself as he activates the Tera orb and directs the energy that bursts from it at his typhlosion. Pale lavender, sparkling energy engulfs Nimuë, then bursts outward in a flash of light.[break][break]

“Well, that confirms that assumption. She’s right as rain.” Where there once was a frigid, frozen sheen of ice, there is now a fine layer of lilac crystal that coats her plum and cream fur. Almost as if she were made entirely of the crystal herself.[break][break]

Piled on top of her head, though…is a ghost? A large, crystallized..“A hat?” It’s both pretty and sort of silly, but right then, Fern is more interested in what can be done[break][break]

“Nim. Retaliate.”[break][break]

He assumes that she will use one of her typical ghost-type attacks, but as she bolts forward, shifting to all four legs and her maw opens up, what comes out instead is a charged up TERA BLAST, aimed squarely at the mega blastoise.[break][break]

“Huh. That must be unique to using the orb. She didn’t know that move before.” Right now, the attack is dark and aural—ghost-like. Would it have looked the same, had he used the fire shard instead?

To say that TERASTELLIZATION is quite a sight would perhaps be an understatement, for the crystals that begin to coat the Typhlosion’s body shimmer beautifully under the training chamber’s fluorescent lights. Iridescence gives way to the melting of ice, and even the symbol that crowns the pokémon’s head doesn’t make for a terrible aesthetic effect…

“Huh. Is that… a ghost? A bit on the nose, no?” Mars jokes, squinting at the Typhlosion’s hat. However, as much as they both clearly appreciate aesthetics, what matters more is the power of this new anomaly and how it may be used to their advantage.

Nim is quick to give them a show, firing a move unlike any move Mars has seen before. It bounces off Calliope’s PROTECT all the same, but that’s not what matters. Opponents won’t always protect.

“I had heard pokémon might adquire new moves while Terastellized. Interesting… That means you could potentially assign them any type and they’d have a move to match.” He muses out loud, a second before a click of his tongue commands Calliope to fire her FLASH CANNON.

It’s then that Mars has another thought:

“Do you want to see how it withstands a Z-MOVE?”

[break][break]

Might as well test it out in a controlled environment, no?
