Not enough time had passed since Mt. Pyre. Not enough to forget that it had kicked her ass. Maybe it was good though, just the motivation she needed to finally get off her ass and quit being so goddamn complacent. It didn’t help that fern delaney was climbing the ladder far faster than she’d thought him capable of. He’d worked for it, of course, much to her chagrin (and, admittedly, she was proud of the idiot). Granted, she only voiced annoyance at the topic.

All the while, she was still at the same goddamn place she’d been before and, at some point, that stopped being okay for her. Maybe death had a way of doing that to you. All she had to do was die enough times until it eventually pissed her off enough to finally do something about it.

Zev Harcourt was a tough son of a bitch and that was all that really mattered to her, regardless of his role in the organization. New beast or not, that was what she needed to do the same. Zev had read Marza Volchitsa's file. Though she specialized in smuggling, she worked just as well as a poacher, an enforcer, a cleaner — all jobs that require physical strength. As a result, her request for hand-to-hand training had not come as a surprise.[break][break]

When he stepped into the gym, he immediately identified her among the other people who were lifting weights, running on the treadmills, or working out on the machines. At the back of the gym, where she waited, were training mats, dummies and bags for boxing, and even a ring for sparring.[break][break]

"Volchitsa," was his terse reply. He dropped his duffel bag outside the edge of the ring. Though he was dressed in athletic clothes and sneakers, his demeanor was still entirely professional. "What's your background with hand-to-hand combat? And have you warmed up already?"

Curt, to the point — how she preferred it. After being partnered up with Delaney for so long, she'd gotten used to incessant chatter to fill up the empty space. She liked the quiet, awkward space between spoken words. It was the place she lived, where she felt at ease. She'd never been bothered by silence or honesty.

"I was trained by my father. Boxing and jiu-jitsu primarily." Trained was one way to put get beat to shit until she learned to fight back. That was how she learned though, through pain. This time would be different though. "Yes, I'm ready when you are." She didn't know much about Zev's skill level, she'd yet to see him fight. There was only his reputation to rely upon, which was good enough with her. She'd just have to prove whether his reputation was worth its weight.

Boxing and jiu-jitsu were good starts. Zev had half-expected Marza to say 'street brawling'; it was the attitude she exuded. Not to say that a street fighter couldn't hold their own against him, but he preferred to spar against others who had a grasp on technique.[break][break]

"Good," was all he said. Having just finished a jog through Sootopolis, he was plenty warmed up, too.[break][break]

Zev reached into his duffel bag and pulled out several pieces of sparring equipment: lightweight, fingerless MMA gloves; shin guards; mouth guards. And he already wore the most important gear under his shorts, just in case.[break][break]

Tossing Marza a set of equipment, he removed his shoes and socks, then strapped on the shin guards and gloves. With mouth guard in hand, he stepped into the ring, waiting for her to join him there.[break][break]

Once she had, he looked her in the eye, his expression dead serious. "I'm a trained MMA fighter, so don't hold back."[break][break]

Then he stuck the mouth guard into his mouth and fell into a defensive stance, waiting to see if she would make the first move.

Marza knew she could be sloppy with technique, it was the natural repercussion for having been taught through desperation. Technique was often lost when the consequence of losing wasn't a simple reprimand or attack on her pride. It had felt like an event of survival, not training. Her father wanted a wolf, not a dog. It was a simple thing. All feral anger and knowing that the consequence on the other end was a loaded gun. This was different, of course, and she was no longer afraid.

The preparation was short and sweet, how she preferred it. Don't hold back, that was all she really needed to hear. Zev had size on his side, but this was hardly a new obstacle for her. She'd learned to fight regardless of the opponent's size. Without further warning, she moved forward. Not a quick as she might have with most opponents. This wasn't the fighting rings on the filthy underside of Slateport.

The first strike was a low feint to the right, other arm caged upwards to defend on the left side. Feet planted. Boxing was where she'd started out, and it felt like a crutch for her to lean on that style. Marza wasn't an overly defensive fighter, but Mt. Pyre had made her hesitant.

As soon as Marza started to move toward him, Zev saw the minute movements that suggested she wasn't as practiced with technique as he'd thought. That was fine. He'd taught others before. He could hone her as one would sharpen a blade.[break][break]

Her right feint came quickly, easily. Any person less skilled than Zev would have been tricked. He stepped into her attack and aimed for a quick jab to the exposed right side of her head. If it landed, it would not hurt too much; his intent was to test her ability, not lay her low within the first few swings.[break][break]

Schooling her would come after.

Whether or not her strike landed was distracted by the throw that followed. He was quicker than she might have anticipated him being. Of course, there was a reason he'd made it as far as he had in the time he did. She ducked low then, beneath the swing though she could feel knuckles graze the top of her skull.

Marza moved quickly for someone of her size, which made her a terrifying opponent in most cases. Zev backed up with the backward movement of his fist returning from the punch, noticing how she stayed low instead of coming back up to resume the fight.[break][break]

As her foot shot out toward his abdomen, Zev grabbed her ankle with both hands, then swept his own foot out toward her other leg to topple her. She thudded to the ground with a heavy slam, the sound and impact softened by the padded floor of the ring.[break][break]

Then Zev followed her to the ground, pinning her in a joint lock that overextended her shoulder, causing discomfort if not pain. "Not bad," he said, meaning it but not yet letting go. She would have to concede defeat first.

Marza knew when she was fucked a second before it happened. After things were put into motion, there was no way to circumvent it until she felt her back hit the mat. The speed of it knocked the breath out of her. Well shit.

The stinging pain of the pin was felt in her joints. No amount of movement allowed any kind of leeway. She hated losing more than anything, but she was becoming familiar with it again. It had been a long time since she'd had to be so painstakingly familiar with the feeling of weakness, that she wasn't sure how to handle it gracefully.

"That I lost?" She grumbled, letting loose a deep sigh before relenting. A quick tap was the only admission of defeat, but it was enough to feel damaging.

As soon as Marza tapped the mat, Zev let go, unwinding himself from her and rising to his feet. "No. Your speed is high for your bulk, and your movements are fairly polished, though they could be better," he said with an analytic coldness. "You've never had formal training, have you?"[break][break]

Though he had phrased it as a question, he did not need her to answer.[break][break]

Zev paced a short distance away so Marza could pick herself off the floor. No one would find him offering his opponent the sportsmanlike gesture of a helping hand up. In a real world situation, doing that would open him up to a counterattack. There was no need to pretend otherwise, even in a spar.

Zev released her upon defeat and she took a moment to roll back up. She didn't enjoy losing, but she was becoming more familiar with it. Of course, she should have better anticipated defeat against a Rocket Beast. "Not formal, my father beat the shit out of me until I learned how to fight back. Then, he kicked harder until I learned technique. It's rough, but it's worked out fairly well for me." That was the simplest way to put it.

Marza's explanation did not surprise Zev. Most criminals did not have proper training when it came to combat — not unless they had certain privileges or backgrounds. Yet her lack of formal training only impressed him more, especially considering the skill he'd just observed.[break][break]

"That changes today. We'll spar until I'm satisfied, then I'll show you what you're doing wrong and how to fix it."[break][break]
