meet me at the casino for a battle. bring your best pokémon.

An innocuous enough text sent to Ceri Glynn just a few days ago as Barnaby was arranging his agenda for the week. With his new admin duties his already hectic schedule had somehow become even more busy, yet it was a pressure that he thrived under. BARNABY FINCH enjoyed the added onus that came with more power.

One of his new responsibilities as public relations lead involved interacting with their organization as a whole to get a better scope of things like morale, inter-rank relations, and assessing the skillsets of ROCKET's members for use in his PR campaigns.

One such ROCKET had just made her appearance below Casino Starlight, where a battling facility had been built for these exact sorts of training exercises. Thanks to Martín del Mar, Barnaby had been given an access key to a private room - a huge one with reinforced concrete walls and vaulted ceilings to allow for flying Pokémon and the like.

"Thanks for coming, Ceri." Barnaby greeted, raising his voice to be heard from across the large space. "I wanted to see what your capabilities are outside of the lab."

Barnaby was already impressed with Ceri's academic and intellectual prowess, but now he wanted a fuller picture of the ROCKET researcher.

"Let's not waste our time with small talk, though. Whenever you're ready," The admin inclined his head toward a Pokémon at his side. "We can begin."

A NINETALES that Ceri had never seen before sauntered forward with a confident stride. Sybille's pelt was a dark, steely gray and her scarlet eyes shone with a hunger that was absent from her Alolan counterpart, Bijou. She was somehow more feral, more cruel in her demeanor.

As soon as the large fox stepped onto the pitch an intense heat filled the room, courtesy of her DROUGHT ability. She'd wait for Ceri to release her Pokémon, poised and receptive to Barnaby's orders.

In the ranks of Team Rocket, Ceri Glynn is no more than an associate, that much is true, yet when it comes to her lab, to her own research, decisions are her own. Generally, there’s a certain degree of control; she’s the one calling the shots.

But scientists answer to higher ups just like any other member of Team Rocket, and so it would seem that BARNABY FINCH now has power he can lord over her. She had been happy when she heard of the promotion, she had even sent him a gift, but of course that when he decides to summon her down to the training facilities beneath Casino Starlight, she’ll have something to say about it.

Ceri is a researcher, she could spend her entire life in a lab, why does she need to be trained in combat?

There’s plenty of other people who can take care of that.

”You say that, but it sounds more like payback to me.” The researcher teases. Now that they’re out of the lab, there’s no safety equipment disguising her revealing attire. ”Straight to work? No small talk? Bee, I think becoming admin has made you into even more of an old man.”

Beaming brightly and beautifully, she brings out a Love Ball, and it’s a Toxtricity that appears from its confines with the riff of thunder.

Of course Bee had brought one of his foxes.

TTX gives the Ninetales a smug look, but Ceri right sneezes behind him.

Barnaby was glad to see that his promotion hadn't stifled her comfort around him. Per usual, Ceri peeled off with some quip about his age (even though six years is not THAT much of a difference... right?) and all he responded with was a shake of his head and a taunting smirk.

"That smart mouth of yours is going to get you in trouble someday, you know." A vaguely threatening statement, but it's all just teasing and in good fun.

Speaking of fun, it was time to begin.

He'd already been holding Ceri Glynn's promotion gift when she walked in - a crystalline TERA ORB recently created by her in the ROCKET labs after the fall of Meteno. Once she'd explained the new TERASTALLIZATION phenomena, Barnaby had wasted no time in practicing using the power with one of his strongest Pokémon, Sybille.

Her TERA TYPE was Grass, something that put the NINETALES at a disadvantage against a Poison-type like TTX the TOXTRICITY. Still, Barnaby wanted to utilize the phenomena in an actual battle, no matter if he won or lost. So, he raised the Tera Orb above his head, letting the glittering energy that materialized to envelop Sybille.

The fox's body appeared to be swathed in a green, crystalline sheen (no hat because ew). With this added boost, despite the disadvantage, Barnaby still wanted to test out the limits of her power.

"Solar Beam."

Immediately she opened her maw and allowed energy to gather there. Within seconds a column of light shot out, aimed directly at TTX.

Ceri has never met either of her grandfathers, but that sure doesn’t stop her from teasing BARNABY FINCH. She even winks at him, although this is mostly to make it clear that it is a joke indeed. After all, old people can be awfully sensible when it comes to these kinds of things.

Still, as much as she may enjoy teasing her friends about how they’re basically prehistoric, there are things that are far more interesting to the young researcher, and anomalies are one of them. Terastelization is the latest among them, and one she had studied enough to create a few working Tera Orbs. One of the first had been gifted to Bee himself when he had been promoted, and of course, she’s more than pleased to see it at work.

”Cute. How are you liking the orb?” She asks, as if more preoccupied with the terastellization itself than the battle at hand. Yet, her own Tera Orb is brought out of a pocket, and with a smirk, she activates it.

Amethyst coloured crystals coat the Toxtricity’s body just as the SOLAR BEAM is shot, and crossing his arms as if protection, he takes the attack’s full force. It would have been bad, the end of the battle right as it begun… weren’t it for poison type’s natural resistance to grass.

”Oh, that’s just toxic.” She teases, but sure enough, TOXIC sludge is released by the pokémon, pouring out all over the ground and bound to POISON anything that comes into contact with it.

Calmly, she takes a step back, as if not to ruin her shoes with the sludge.

"It's a wonderful piece of machinery. Not sure how it exactly works," Idly, Barnaby thumbed the Tera Orb in his hand, rolling it over in his palm as the battle commenced. "But I'm sure you'll figure it out soon, nerd."

Yeah. He went there. Name calling went both ways, admin position or not.

Back to the fight, TTX took the direct hit from SOLAR BEAM like a champ. Unsurprising, considering his typing, yet it had appeared to do more damage than Barnaby had initially expected. The Terastallization was definitely having an effect on the power of Sybille's Grass-type moves.

However, a change of strategy was in order once the TOXTRICITY spewed gunk from it's gullet, covering the field. Getting poisoned this early on in the battle would not be good.

"Protect!" A screen of light materialized, guarding the NINETALES from most of the toxic muck. She didn't dawdle, though; as soon as the opening presented itself she rushed to the side and began circling the field. Speed was one of her greatest advantages - no matter the power of an attack, if it didn't hit, it was useless.

Ceri blows a bubble of pink gum, audibly popping it before – without missing a beat – giving the wittiest of remarks while looking right into the admin’s eyes:

For how sweetly it's said, the attack is the opposite of it, for the energy of the crystals that mark the Toxtricity’s body is gathered in one noxious and destructive attack. TERA BLAST.

Oh what the hell, now she's making jokes about protection? For a genius Ceri's humor was rather juvenile, Barnaby thought to himself.

She seemed like she was kidding, sure, but the admin was just skeptical enough to feel compelled to utter a sentence he NEVER thought he would need to:

"Ceri, please tell me I don't need to have the safe sex talk with you after this battle. Please." There was an honest to ARCEUS grimace on his face as he asked.

Luckily, Barnaby wasn't caught off-guard enough to take his attention away from the battle in front of him. Sybille was still pacing around the field, ready to dodge an attack - like the one Ceri just ordered. TERA BLAST, was what she'd called it. It wasn't a move Barnaby had seen before and, more importantly, one that his NINETALES hadn't either.

She moved to dodge, but the blast was so widespread there was no sidestepping it completely. The silver fox was knocked back and sustained considerable damage. Not enough to count her out just yet, though.

A sharp whistle from Barnaby caused her to pause and face TTX. Another, lower one left his lips and immediately Sybille's eyes began to glow a pale pink color. An invisible assault in the form of EXTRASENSORY soon followed the unspoken order.

In part because Bee seems to think it prudent to talk to her safe sex, which kind of proves her point and also makes it obvious that he doesn’t know her as well as he’d like to pretend (you really think this girl isn’t doing everything in her power to avoid pregnancy? She’s here to discover things and win awards, not to look after children, thank you very much).

The other part of it is simple: her scandalous claim clearly hadn’t scandalised Bee enough to forget about the battle taking place between them. Lame.

”Firstly, point proven. Secondly, no, silly, I was just going for shock factor.” She giggles, winking and giving him a ’tehe~’ and everything. It’s all an act, of course. The juvenile humour, the attitude, even the outfits. The persona she chooses to show the world in order to hide who she truly is. But, where does that facade end, and where does the real Ceri begin?

Unfortunately, there would be no discovering that today, because the crystals coating TTX’s body begin to shatter when the EXTRASENSORY attack meets its mark. She sighs, calling the Toxtricity back.

Ah, victory. It still tasted sweet even at the rope old age of twenty-eight.

"It worked. Congratulations." Barnaby said drily, shaking his head, as he recalled Sybille to his side and strode across the pitch toward Ceri Glynn. "Thank you for not putting me through that uncomfortable conversation."

Stepping around the pools of toxic muck left behind by the researcher's TOXTRICITY, Barnaby soon reached her end of the room. "Not bad, by the way."

She had proven she could do more than just hide away in a remote laboratory. If times ever called for it, Ceri would be able to protect herself - and, much more importantly, the research she was doing under ROCKET's authority.

"I'll remember that. It was a pretty powerful move, all things considered. I'm guessing it takes on the Pokémon's current Tera Type?"
