The lack of hesitation in Isaac caught her by surprise. And his follow-up comment even more so.

Johanna waited with bated breath for Isaac’s anger to surface. She was certain he would be angry for abandoning them, but the anger she waited for never came. Instead he gave her a warning.

She looked baffled, once again something easy to read upon her face. But then her steeled resolve slowly broke through as she continued to meet Isaac’s gaze. His warning did not fall on deaf ears.

“I know.” She spoke.

“I considered the killed-in-action route - “ She shook her head. “- But I know inevitably it will get out. That I am alive. -” A brief moment of solemnity in her voice “ - And honestly, I don’t want to live my life not knowing if I should be afraid of an attack or not.”

She paused, taking a breath and adding some courage to her voice. “If they want to come for me, I will fight them.” She had attempted to fight Palkia and lived to tell the tale. If Team Rocket wanted a go at her, she’d oblige them. Though she knew there was a chance that very same fight might include Isaac.

He then listed some names of important people that she made sure to commit to memory. They might be able to help her, should she need it. “Don’t worry. I won’t tell him.” She sent him a smile. “But thank you, Isaac.” She said, “Thank you for listening and thank you for the help you have given me in past and present.”

Sadness welled up in her eyes, for she knew their talk couldn’t go on much longer. Not because she didn’t want to, but because she figured Isaac would be in pain from hearing this. After all, he hadn’t voiced his own opinions on the matter. That surely meant that he did not want her to go, but as a friend he would let her.

“I suppose it is time for me to leave.” Johanna said "Goodbye, Isaac." she continued as she began to turn and leave. The moment her face was hidden from his view, her lips began to quiver. Isaac might not have been her bestest friend, but stabbing him in the heart like this didn’t feel any less painful.

It was a bold foundation nonetheless. With this new decision, she was asking for a fight. Isaac remembered how personally jayden cross had taken Ashley Shepard's betrayal, how their entire history of best friendship didn't stop him from killing Sushi in cold blood. That was Ashley Sawyer, Kanto veteran who just wanted a peaceful life. This was Johanna Joy, future gym leader. The stakes were far higher here.[break][break]

Isaac didn't know if he could handle countless attempts on his life. He didn't know what would be worse; the physical strain on him and his team, or the knowledge that those fights would be against people he truly loved.[break][break]

"It's the least I can do," Isaac said, his own smile soft and fragile. "Just because I'm on Rocket, it doesn't mean I can't do the right thing for, right?"[break][break]

Except it kinda did.[break][break]

With that, she turned, ready to walk out of Isaac's life. He sighed as he watched her go, the snow falling faster and more heavily around him. And then he ran to follow, giving her a quick, protective hug before she could vanish from his life. "You better make me proud out there," he whispered, voice quivering from tears that refused to be held back any longer. "And if this all works out, you owe me a gym battle, y'hear?"[break][break]

He wished that he, in turn, could make her promises. He wished he could promise her that she'd be safe. He wished he could promise her that he'd look out for her. He wished he could promise her that everything would be okay. But that was both the scariest and most exciting part about this decision. From here on out, that would all be in Johanna's hands.[break][break]

Her knew that meant they'd be good ones.[break][break]

It was funny. One minute, Isaac was right behind Johanna, giving her a final hug for the road. The next minute, he was gone. If Johanna looked over her shoulder to check, she'd see nothing but a set of distant footprints. It was as if he'd turned to snow and blew away in the wind.
