With a whole ass bottle now prepared between them, Penelope wasted no time leaning forward to accept her share of its delicacies. If Mr CEO was ready to spend the money, then who was she to stop him?

Vice sloshing up the rim of her now-filled glass, the councilwoman settled back into the cushiony leather of her seat, her legs naturally curling up around as she pressed most of her weight onto one of the armrests.

the smell of alcohol permeates the table. he can smell it on his clothes. it spirals on his breath. and even so, he relishes the scent. for it ail the pretense that presides without it.

“you would be suited to answer that than i am.”

whether or not his glass is filled, he can still see through it. from an angle, he too sees her. refracted and distorted. glossy from the residue of his last parting shot.

“from someone who went from ‘the league doesn’t care’ and ‘the league doesn’t do enough’ to claiming one of its most prominent seats.”

The sharp stench of the liquor drew out a shudder down her spine. How bad was it that her throat ached for its serpentine sting?[break][break]

Fingers tracing the rim of the glass, Penelope's gold-alloyed eyes narrowed down at him. They spoke of her distaste toward not only the question itself, but Fernando's insistence on pulling her down, time and time again. Turning every little question into a game of, 'how about you?'`

She breathed out a sigh.

"You're right. I was just an everyday woman who recognizes I could do more and tries to do so," she repeated, embellishing his own words with a hearty voice, "And yet, my change of heart was, what did you call it? A statement to my conniving nature."

IN THE RESOLVE THAT MAKES RESOLUTIONS

GOOD COMPANY HINGES ON CHEMISTRY. between bitter words and thinly veiled accusations sits the laughter of two people. what comes out of throat is not just chuckles of air but an inhibition of overconsumption. even fernando’s pale skin can’t hide the red flush of expanded blood vessels.

“the difference is your origin,” he says pointedly.

“kyle lopez’s didn’t make a career out of putting down his current colleagues.”

another glass clinks as he not so softly sets down his empty glass.

“but that’s not what makes you conniving, livy. i can respect change. it’s your inability to admit you were wrong. you’ve abandoned your principles, miss red tape, but you won’t recant what you’ve said.”

further debate unravels as they slosh drunken accusations. what little progress they make, for every inch fernando gives in, he also doubles back. for he remains stubborn.

he is a wall with a door. one that opens up against her better expectations (in some regards) only to close and keep her out with repetition.

some points, he just won’t let go.
