THE ULTRA CRATER IS A LARGE EXPANSE UNDERNEATH A YELLOW SKY. In between thick, almost impassable jungles, craters filled with green fields and alien plants lay. What appears to be metal pipe-like roots grow out the rock of crater walls. Geysers dot this alien landscape, occasionally expelling shrieking steam.[break][break]

The world is frequented by earthquakes, causing odd red monoliths of rock to quake throughout the realm. Oddly, the Ultra Thicket possesses very fertile soil. In the distance, a large mountainous expanse can be seen, though the range does not seem too high.

The time had finally arrived.

Having been invited by Alexei Ivanov to join the squad, Remiel was sure to pack his gear well yet light so that he wouldn't fall behind. He was happy to see another friend was coming along, too: fellow GALARIAN Guillermo Marceliño . And, though he'd never met COUNCIL MEMBER Elinor Anderson personally, he had heard plenty from the social circles in politics and was pleased to finally be introduced to her.

Standing on a ridge that overlooked a vast alien jungle and a massive crater covered in hues of green and blue, Remiel lifts a set of binoculars to his eyes and scouts the area. Geysers that dot the region periodically gush steaming vapors towards the yellow sky. The earth rumbles beneath their feet every so often, like a giant's grumbling stomach. In the distance, the dark silhouettes of mountains fade in and out from fog.

"We should head towards the mountains," The ambassador says, pointing them out before tucking his binoculars back into his pack. "It would be IDEAL to reach them before it got dark. We can collect samples along the way, in the crater there." He adds, while his SHINY DOUBLADE excitedly dances in the air behind him.

Before forgetting, Remiel reaches for the chest mount strapped over his torso and turns on the GOPRO camera attached.

Standing within an entirely new world offered to them by the wild rifts, surrounded not only by members of the League, but civilians, in the loosest use of the term. She was reminded of the conversation she had had with FERNANDO SILPH.

Stopping the people of Hoenn from going into these had proven impossible from the start, she had been well aware of that. But that didn’t mean she liked the thought one bit.

But since she couldn’t stop them, she might at least lead by example and jump head first into the danger. Wearing her red Ranger’s uniform. She gazed upon the very same mountain that the Ambassador suggested that they head for.

“I think that's a good idea, what do you two think?” She looked toward Alexei Ivanov and Guillermo Marceliño for their expert opinions. Though she hoped asking for their opinion wouldn’t lead to a long debate which would cut them off of precious time.

Meanwhile her Aggron stood nearby offering guard duty just in case. Watching the surroundings like a gaze so that nothing could sneak up on them… Or at least he hoped his watchful gaze was that good, but he did find the jovial dancing doublade a bit distracting.

[attr="class","samjermain"]Memo had been staring at the giant rift eating up parts of their city since it’d opened, stuck somewhere between feeling cowardly and angry. He felt, in tandem, like he hadn’t argued enough to move the Primal Point elsewhere, while also being pissed off that no one had listened to what arguing he had done.

He’d planned on adventuring within by himself, because he was nothing if not a professional self-martyr, but as he did with most things in life, his better half reminded him he no longer had to do things like this alone.

The landscape beneath the ridge they’ve gathered on reminds him of a macabre quilt, or a pattern of cells: life and functionality snug within designated spaces, walls.

“Sounds good to me,” he said with a shrug and a small smile. Coming in with a group hadn’t changed the fact that he didn’t have a plan. The day he didn’t fly by the seat of his pants was the day he’d be dead and the plan would be for his funeral. His Togekiss, Puck, hovered above the group, curiously awaiting their next move.

“Maybe we should have someone airborne, to keep an eye on the general surroundings,” he suggested, looking to Alex, who was the most experienced flyer of the group, “since we really don’t know what we’re getting into.”

“Way ahead of you there, Frog,” he began quietly, Kyouya the Braviary already out and about just waiting for him to get on the blue-plumed avian’s back so they could go skyward.

“If I come down from the skies, either I found something bad, or Kyouya over here did and we don’t want to give our position away to everything hostile out there and have them start chasing after us, and—” he began to explain, before belatedly realizing that—huh.

Remy was in the same place as his boyfriend, and he knew that they were both Galarian…

“Alright, before I do get into the sky, you two know each other?!” he gaped, blinking as he looked between Remiel and his boyfriend. Just how small was his world, really?!

And then, since sadly his friend couldn’t come along with them (he was already with another group exploring somewhere else) he’d sent his cousin in his place. Who just happened to be one of the council members—at least, the one he didn’t mind being around!

(Don’t tell Fernando!)

“Oh right, quick intro in order—Rem, meet miss Elinor, esteemed member of the Council. Also a Ranger,” he continued as he swung himself up on the avian before going skyward.

Turning to the redhead, he continued, “I trust you know of the esteemed Galarian ambassador, Mr. Calcifet?”

Yeah… more formal introductions would have to come later because the Braviary let out an impatient squawking noise before they took off.

…and he didn’t even give his boyfriend a kiss before taking his position as point in the sky! Whoops…

Prior to departing, Remiel nods at Guillermo Marceliño 's suggestion for air support and recon. At Alexei Ivanov 's response, the ambassador chuckles and nods before briefly relaying how exactly they'd met (WINDRIDERS). Though the introductions had happened prior to entering the portal, too, so the exchange here is comparatively short.

Before long, they move on.

THE JUNGLE

The jungle is thick and full of alien life. Remiel summons his Doublade to his hands, and she wraps her ribbons around his forearms before he proceeds to cut his way through the vines. All of it proves to be rather exhausting in the high humidity, however, so the ambassador summons a KINGAMBIT to assist them. It KOWTOW CLEAVES a path ahead, slicing vine and branch alike with great precision and endurance.

The Galarian pauses to take a drink of water from his canteen, in the meantime, then wipes the sweat from his brow with a small towel before regarding Elinor Anderson with an abashed chuckle. "Apologies. It's not IDEAL for a gentleman to sweat so profusely in front of a lady. Especially a councilwoman." He adds, folding and packing his towel back into his pack before rearming himself with blades.

"I hear you're from RUSTBORO as well? We should grab coffee sometime."

Alexei took to the skies. Elinor’s gaze followed, making sure that their air support got up there safely.

And then the journey began. Thick wines and alien life made for near impassable terrain. While Aggron would’ve loved nothing more than to go ahead and slash at all the wilderness, that role had been filled perfectly with Doublade and Kingambit, and so he found himself taking rear-guard instead.

A brief pause was taken to give Remiel a moment to drink. Elinor was quick to join him in that, sipping her own Canteen in the process. A small lighthearted chuckle escaped her, as she closed her Canteen once more. “We should.” Elinor agreed.

“And please, do not worry. I am not so delicate that a bit of sweat will affect me.” She replied. Hoping to ease some of the formal-tension that she figured Remiel carried.

She turned her gaze upward towards Alexei Ivanov wondering what fantastical views he might be getting from up there.

[attr="class","samjermain"]The familiar sight of the Braviary heartened Memo. Kyouya was capable, and also wouldn’t try and eat him at the first opportunity. It also meant Alex would be off the ground and, ideally, wouldn’t be in the direct line of fire for whatever fresh hell they were walking into.

It also also meant, if shit went pear-shaped, as Memo expected it most likely would, Alex, airborne, could escape. If he didn’t do the stupid thing and throw himself into the fray.

“Yes, we’ve met,” Memo said, though it seemed so long ago, Remy had met a very different Guillermo.

They fall into a sort of formation as they traipse through the jungle. Memo swaps Puck out for Oona, whose lithe form and sharp claws make quick work of tearing through the undergrowth. Remiel and Elinor stop for a brief break, but Memo’s restlessness drives him forward, just a little, following a trail Oona’s sliced through the undergrowth. He can still hear the group behind him, so he’s not too far off.

His foot touches down and the ground shifts. That’s how he knows he’s made his first mistake. His second is not running as the loamy ground in front of him lifts and swells; a Centiskorch larger than a football field rises up in front of him-- it’s so broad that whole trees are lifted when it moves-- and it cranes its massive, segmented body to snap at him with pincers that seem larger than Memo is tall.

“Oops.”

He backpedals, throwing an arm up and back to lift himself up the tiny ledge he came; Oona’s whirled around, too, racing to help him; the Centiskorch blasts the ground where he’d been standing, just as Oona hits it from behind with a fierce headbutt. The flames singe the ground right where he'd been standing a moment ago, and it dredged up memories from the Littleroot fire...

...no time for PTSD

“We should move,” he says as he gets back to the group, "unless we want to stay around and play real life Bugsnax." The Centiskorch is skittering and clacking as Oona is doing her best to hold it at bay, zapping it with ice beam. Its legs freeze together for a moment just for the ice to melt away again; it's slowing it, but not well, and not for long.

Meanwhile, he was up in the air—while he was uncomfortable that Frog wasn’t with him (at the literal insistence of his boyfriend) they really did need a second pair of eyes up in the sky.

Which was what he was doing right now, as you all do.

Thanks to ‘avian vision’ the Braviary could see much farther ahead, and realized that they were most probably headed towards a certain area that had… huh. Wait, what?

Even he had to make Kyouya hold his airborne position so he could squint into the distance and see where they were headed.

Both avian and rider were tempted to yell towards the group below that they’d found something, but fact of the matter was when Alexei turned around and saw a giant-ass centipede… literally as big as a Unovan soccer field (at least it wasn’t a kaiju-sized Rellor, imagine the stench of that dung ball) rear up and try to take a swipe at his boyfriend, that’s when he lost his shit.

“Not today, Satan!” he snarled to himself, wheeling the avian around so that the Braviary did an about-face, before suddenly diving low, and fast—and then conjuring up an avalanche of boulders in the form of a Rock Slide!

“Get in the air!” he shouted once he’d come swooping down close enough to where the group was, hoping that everyone else had brought something that could fly.

He knew that as much as the next birdbrain that avian Pokémon could only support the weight of two people, max, and that he had to grab his boyfriend away from the scorching fire!

• Alex has already spotted (from afar) where the baby Celestella are (uh-oh!) and is about to fly down to report the finding when—
• well shit we’re all fucked. At least it wasn’t a kaiju Rellor!
• he clean forgets what he was going to say as he literally comes screaming down from the skies, bringing a Rock Slide c/o the Braviary and aiming it as much as he can towards the kaiju-Centiskorch before yelling at everyone to get in the air because no way in hell y’alls can outrun that shit!
• Bird gonna try and grab Frog outta the way. HAHAHAHAHA

Remiel smiles at Elinor and nods in understanding. She isn't a noblewoman of the Galarian court, of course. Though, even still, the prince finds himself taking whatever opportunity he can to show consideration and chivalry. It's as hardwired into him as anything else.

When a cacophony of destruction erupts, however, signaling the presence of something big nearby, their conversation is swiftly ended before it can really begin. The ambassador is quick to pack up before heading off to look for Guillermo. Thankfully, the young man appears just in time to stop him from proceeding any further. Then a warning is issued.

Thanks to Alexei's air support, they're given enough time to hightail it out of there. In Remiel's case, he only turns back once to capture the KAIJU CENTISKORCH on camera before casting a LIGHTNING STILETTO out of the burning jungle. After temporarily returning his Pokémon to make the jump with him, he TELEPORTS out of harm's way.

THE CRATER

They finally reach the alien crater they had seen from so far away, leaving the burning jungle and its chittering monster behind them. Metal, pipe-like roots grow out from the crater walls surrounding them, too. But, more interestingly, the field they enter seems to be a hive for infant iterations of UB-04 BLASTER.

In other words, they find hundreds of BABY CELESTEELA planted in the verdant range in front of them. Their mother, it appears, is buried just beyond as well. The tips of her head converge above ground like a large metal tepee.

After recording the scene with his GoPro, Remiel crouches down and pulls down his pack to retrieve his sample kit. Using the variety of tools therein, he collects separate samples of the soil and grass for further study later. "Fascinating, isn't it?" He remarks as he places those samples away. His shiny Doublade hovers just behind him; vigilant.

For a brief moment everything was serene.

Then Guillamo came running with a Kaiju sized Centiscorch in hot pursuit.

Elinor was quick to nope her way out of there. Though Aggron was not pleased about that. It seemed like a fun potential battle. But Elinor would have none of it. Had she been alone, perhaps. But not.

She quickly retrieved Aggron into his ball and summoned forth her Hisuian Braviary. She quickly mid run jumped onto the bird's back and rose to safety.

The next stop on this odd journey was the crater. They had seen it from so far away. But to finally be there. She had to forgo her own habit of touching things as the place was filled with an odd amount of Ultra Beasts, tiny saplings they may be. Though she had limited experience with them. She still figured they could be dangerous.

“Very fascinating.” Elinor replied. “Though with all these saplings around, I wonder if we only need to worry about the big one over there if there'll be a mate coming.” Elinor said as her gaze turned to the big one buried nearby.

Little did she knew that the saplings were equally curious one of them was close enough to touch Elinor before her Hisuian Braviary could warn her.

[attr="class","samjermain"]He was loathe to go skyward and abandon their allies on the ground, but there was a particular edge in Alex’s voice that Memo definitely didn’t like. In an artful, acrobatic, and practiced move, he pitched backward, grabbed Alex’s proffered forearm, and swung onto the back of the eagle as they lifted into the air.

Luckily, it seems like Remiel and Elinor have things well in hand. The air burns with the scent of ozone and electrical charges, and Memo relaxes, slightly, as both government officials got the hell out of dodge. He lets his forehead rest in the space between Alex’s shoulderblades.

“Thanks for the save.”

The rest of the journey is uneventful, and they reach the crater in record time. Kyouya drifts downwards and Memo slips carefully off his back, making sure to not touch or bump any of the little nubbins in the field.

“They’re so-- small. And cute.” He finds his mouth quirking up despite himself at the image of all the wee Celesteela-- though he doesn’t know that’s what they are-- and he turns a small circle, amazed at the sheer number of them.

He catches movement out of the corner of his eye. “Councilwoman, watch out--,”

Too late. One of the little nodes bonks up against the ball of her ankle.

From far away, there comes a strange undulating sound, like the blades of a helicopter-- growing faster and faster and louder and louder. A glint of sunlight flashes off the Kartana’s body as it whirls in to defend its charges.

He couldn’t believe what they were seeing. This was… it was…

His mind very briefly flashed back to Balder Schwartz and the gigantic Pokémon the other had brought along to his non-trad challenge at the gym. That was… wasn’t that the head of…

“I’ve seen that one before,” he pointed out quietly, tilting his head in the direction of the gigantic Celesteela. “Someone I know owned one. I don’t know where it is now, though.”

Of that he was certain. In fact he remembered the Pokéball it came in—ornate black finish with runic lettering…

Unfortunately the rest of the thought is interrupted because of the sounds of slicing… wait a second, weren’t they in a jungle? How come he could hear helicopter shinging noises coming from the background?

“What are those?!” he exclaimed as the shinging, cutting noises approached with mad speed and were literally ready to ~~cut a bitch~~ slice them open. But they were so small?!

“Oh, no!” he exclaimed, rummaging around his pockets and pulling out another Pokéball at random (the power of hammerspace-fu!) and throwing it forward to reveal his Delphox, Aira.

“Aira! Flamethrower!” he all but shrieked, seeing that there were… a LOT of the source of the cutting, shinging, chopping noises headed their way!

The Delphox needed no further instruction as she raised her ‘wand’ and then released a powerful burst of flames, a desperate attempt to incinerate the incoming Kartana—he wasn’t sure if there was just the one but the way the slicing and dicing noises reverberated through the clearing he was pretty sure one singular whatever those were wasn’t enough to make sound that loud on approach!

“Turn up the heat!” he followed up afterward; while the Delphox whirled around and gave him a ‘are you crazy?!’ look, she nodded and turned back once more, further intensifying her efforts.

There was a very high chance someone was going to get burned if they were too close to where the Delphox was, literally playing the part of a firebreather attempting to incinerate the incoming Kartana…

• Alex muses out loud about the gigantic Celesteela, suddenly remembered where he’d seen them before (hi Balder Schwartz)
• before he can elaborate further, though… here come the Kartana and there may be more than one of them!
• Alex.exe has stopped working, please reboot [dial-up noises]
• 0.5 seconds later, a Delphox makes her appearance and begins to spam the ever-loving shit out of Flamethrower

Accidents happen. The consequences of said actions in this bizarre world are unknown to them, but they do not stay unknown for too long. They manifest as a SWARM of KARTANA that seem to operate like a hive mind, protecting the infant Celesteela buried in the ground. Surrounded at all sides, Remiel Calcifet sees no other option than to fight back and create an opening for them.

The prince outstretches his arms and opens his hands before his Doublade swiftly places herself in his grasp, wrapping each of her banners around his forearms. The spirit of TALIYAH CALCIFET makes her presence known then, infiltrating his mind and spreading like oil spreads in clear water.

Another adventure, grand nephew?

Her voice is thick with an old Galarian accent used by royalty in an age past. She sounds amused.

Another bind, auntie.

She hums in agreement.

This certainly isn't IDEAL... but we can make it so.

Remiel nods.

I lend you my body; our blood.

Let's get to it then, shall we?

Suddenly, a visible ghostly miasma surrounds Remiel. His eyes, once an impeccable shade of cobalt blue, go full black. The spirit of his Doublade, his ancestor, has POSSESSED him. And, though he remains conscious and aware of what is going on, he is little more than a passenger in his own body now. Crossing her blades, the voice of Taliyah Calcifet blends with that of her grand nephew as she exclaims:

"FULL CONTROL ARMAMENT SYNC, CALCIFET ART - SOVEREIGN’S FINAL RIPOSTE!"

In a flurry of attacks powered by her supernatural force, the pair strike down the swarm of Kartana with such precision and beauty that Remiel can't imagine having curated a more IDEAL response. Even ZEKROM would be impressed.

When it's done, Kartana rain down from the sky and are consumed by the living earth below as Taliyah yields control back to Remiel. There is little time to relax, however, as an even LARGER KARTANA SWARM appears on the horizon of the crater. Remiel clicks his tongue, releasing the double blades from his hands so they may fly freely.

"We need to go; now! North towards the mountains is our only chance!" Unfortunately, that meant running past or flying above the ADULT CELESTEELA that lay dormant in those parts. It was a risk they would have to take.

Within short moments disaster set upon them.

Elinor barely felt the touch of the curious Celesteela. It was only when Guillermo spoke that she realized what had happened. And then it was too late.

The hoard of Kartana set upon them. There was an initial wave that Remiel and Alex were quick to set upon. Dealing with. And for a brief moment after Remiel’s Z-move usage, it seemed they had found peace.

Only for her to feel a sudden slicing feeling along the arm before a warmth spread searing pain spread. A single Kartana had dodged all of the attacks, the fire, the fancy sword play only to find its target.

Right hand covered the bloody wound, soon the red spread to her grasp. For a brief moment she looked at her wound, then toward the Kartana which hovered in front of her. But it didn’t attack. It’s Origami body betraying no emotions to her. It almost felt like she was staring at a paper clone of FERNANDO SILPH.

Luckily, she had had enough meetings with the nigh emotionless man to spot the small twitches in the Kartana’s facade.

It almost seemed curious.

Perhaps these two species work and live together in symbiosis? Kartana defended the younglings in return for some unknown, probably food of some sort. It made sense.

Which also probably meant that the hoard that just came was the scouts. A small, expendable force gauging the strength of the enemies. It would make sense, not only because it would be the same approach she would take as a member of the Council, but because of the way the Kartana didn’t seem to attack, but simply stare and lick at the blood it had drawn from her.

Perhaps we can calm them with food?

The idea was simple. But worth a shot.

The Kartana tensed as Elinor began to move her right hand, reaching into one of her pockets for the snacks inside. She slowly reached it forward as an offering as she said. “We come in peace.” She did not know if the Kartana could understand what she said. But the little Origami figure took the snacks all the same and flew off towards the giant Hoard that was coming for them.

Wait hoard?!

She might’ve converted one, and hopefully it would spread the news that they weren’t dangerous. But there was no way it could stop the hoard quickly enough.

Remiel Calcifet did not need to urge her on. Elinor quickly jumped onto the back of her Hisuian Braviary once again, hoping to make her Northward bound escape on its back as it took to the sky.
