A Race To Remember:Gym Battle (Ghost Vs Josh)

For the first time all race, Josh could feel Yosei's heartbeat. Many dragons' musculoskeletal systems were so strong that they often absorbed the force of their beating hearts to the point where Pokémon Centers required specialized equipment to even take their pulse. To overpower that system meant the race was putting even more strain on the Salamence than Josh had initially thought.

As the Gym Leader wheeled his flying mount around the sharp curve at a lower speed than before to compensate for the thrust imbalance, sunlight reflected off a glint of sweat seeping through Yosei's scales. "We've only got one more lap to go! If you can't handle it, there's no shame in ducking out early. I know it's been a tough race for you. I just don't want to see you get hurt." While the cry he got in response was a weak one, it was one of affirmation. "Alright, if you're sure. Let's finish strong!" With that, Josh kept the dragon at his slightly lower speed to try to relieve some of the pressure the race had put on the ailing Pokémon's wing joints.

Unlike Josh's Salamence, Roxie had plenty of fuel left in the metaphorical tank. The red-winged Pokémon could Dragon Dance all day if she wanted. Still, Ghost had eased up on the dragon, just as the Gym Leader did. The challenger's braking was just a bit too late, swinging wide to the outside but ultimately avoiding a collision with the Hydreigon and Salamence that passed him. He was still not out of the race by any stretch; if anything, avoiding the traffic jam in the narrowest part of the course worked out well for the challenger!

Josh, on the other hand, learned from today's race: sometimes slower is faster. While Yosei wasn't able to fly as fast as normal thanks to the chain of Dragon Dances overstraining his muscles, the slower speeds let him and his trainer focus on technique, rounding almost every corner perfectly and minimizing the raw distance traveled to navigate every curve. He could feel the powerful wingbeats of the Hydreigon near him, the Garchomp flying above the Gym Leader. The three were in a pyramid formation down the narrow stretch leading to the starting line. The white flag waved, an indicator that the final lap was starting!

INSTRUCTIONS

The fans cheered loudly as the white flag waved to the side of the starting arch; it was the last time around the track! For the final lap of the race, the Leader's rolls will be capped at 170, before modifiers are applied.

FINAL LAP | OBSTACLE 1

Prompt: After the course's opening U-Turn came the inverted straightaway one last time. Having completed two laps around the ccurse already, racers had likely become familiar with the angles needed to fly through the trail of target rings. The only difference this time around was the higher speeds compared to the first lap. It would necessitate a much tighter barrel roll to properly enter and exit the corkscrew. Depending on the Pokémon, the higher rotation rate could make it easier or harder on them!

Target Number: 125 (Endurance)

Special: None

As he zigged instead of zagged it could have been game over. However, Ghost kept his Cool as Roxie gain her steadiness back. But as he looked up he saw four bodies in front of him.
Which meant he was dead last.
A smile would come over his face. As he would then say to his Pokemon. ", Heya I think it's about time we try out our speed rider style." As stars enter her eyes Moxie. Would be all cheers. Ghost looked on and then he would stand up tall on her back.

He would then couch down as if he was on a skateboard. As he places his feet inside his rider's foot pouches. As to make sure he would not fall off. Ghost would notice her speed starting to increase. Soon enough he would point forward a sign that tells Roxie to Shoot for the stars. Just as he did that. *She would use her dragon dance* as he realized this could be the last moment of the race. As he saw the white flag all he could do is close his eyes and leave the rest up to Roxie. WIN OR LOSE HE HAD A GREAT TIME TODAY.

Notes
Roxie uses Dragon Dance.

Josh being able to feel Yosei's beating heart was a sign that perhaps the Salamence was built more for battle than for racing. While all Pokémon internally registered with the Gym needed to be trained for both, some excelled at contests of force; others, contests of speed. It was ultimately the Gym Leader's responsibility to determine which was which, and the only way to find out was to see how the Pokémon performed!

Josh heard the sound of discharged dragon energy behind him, which could only mean one thing: Ghost and Roxie were coming from behind them in a Dragon Dance, and fast. If the course's flags didn't force dragon and rider to corkscrew, it would have been far easier attempting to cut the challenger and rival Salamence off. With the Leader's mount in a weakened state, he instead put his focus on fundamentals and form. If the challenger's form was superior, then in Josh's eyes he deserved a Badge. "Focus, Yosei! I know you can fight through it!" the Master of Faster cheered his mount on as he leaned into the inversion.

Ghost's decision to lean in, close his eyes, and put his full trust in Roxie paid off in spades. Not having to see the blue sky beneath him and direct his Salamence let Roxie relax. Her graceful DRAGON DANCE let her rocket past Alphamax and Yosei, the former of which struggled to perform the mandated barrel roll. Garchomp weren't built for those kinds of maneuvers, which was evident from the ground-type's speed dropping.

While the duo were running out of real estate to catch Lyndon and Resheph, the two at this point likely to win the race, Ghost found himself in an intense battle for second place, Roxie colliding with a trailing image of the Hydreigon in front of her. With a quick swerve, Shawn reined the dark-type dragon in an effort to cut Ghost off, but chose the wrong direction. Ghost had faked him out, the two now in second place by a very small margin as the course began to narrow.

FINAL LAP | OBSTACLE 2

Prompt: The course quickly narrowed after the high speed corkscrew. While the racers were no doubt familiar with its width after two laps, those not used to flying Pokémon that subjected their riders to the intense g-forces that came with the spinning turn may find the resulting vertigo to interfere with their ability to keep their Pokémon steady through the narrow backstretch! While passing by going above or below a competitor was possible, the course turned so narrow that passing side-to-side would be risky! The end was in sight! Once the racers passed the narrow S-Curve at the end of the backstretch, it would be a straight line sprint to the finish!

Target Number: 150 (Speed)

Special: Pokémon also apply half their Endurance ranks and half their Reaction ranks (no rounding) to this Obstacle. TP loss as a result of rolling beneath this Obstacle's Target Number is multiplied by 1.5.

Roxie was roaring with pride. As she looked on and waited for Ghost's praise. To which he knew he had just to do. But that would have to wait as he had more to do. No they had more to do. Ghost only saw one person in front of them and that meant. He should be in second or so.
But at any time he could be dead last. As he just witnessed and he was not going to let that happen again. As he placed his hand on Roxie's head. He would then say to her. "Do not give in now do you hear me? We are so close to the finish line yet we have a long way to go. I see the way you look at Roc Royal and how you long to be like him. But you are about to do something not even he has and that's win me a badge and not just any badge but my very first one. Now then use Dragon Dance again and again until your speed is unmatched not even by the faster gym in the league. ROXIE USE DRAGON DANCE NOWWW!!!"

Her heart started to beat ever so fast. As she could feel her trainer's battle heart and how he wanted to win this so badly. She would then unleash her soul or how Ghost would say it. Next thing next. *DRAGON DANCE* Came into play and would roar once gain as her speed went even beyond what she could normally do. But would it be enough as the duo jetted the down the straight shot to victory?

Even Josh's own heart started to pound after hearing Ghost's shout. It seemed the Chaser wasn't in this race just to get the Gym Badge; he wanted to win, and at all costs, at that. The challenger's determination was admirable; it mirrored his own in his chase for the Johto Beast, when he was actively pursuing it. They both clearly had the same level passion for a specific electric deity. It was a passion that reflected the way the two handled everything they did.

The Gym Leader maintaining just enough speed to properly angle through the inversion allowed him to stave off vertigo and keep his wits about him as the course narrowed. Hearing the roaring sound of Garchomp bio-thrusters behind him, Josh focused not on making a move on the Hydreigon in front of him, but the Garchomp behind him.

As the lanes narrowed, Lyndon subtly slowed his Dragonair down. He understood that winning by a small amount was no different than winning by a landslide. Seizing the opportunity, Shawn and both ordered their dragons to use DOUBLE TEAM and DRAGON DANCE. It was a risky move, but one that paid off! The two dragons added more distance from the Leader and his weary Salamence. Josh's Pokémon was sluggish to handle from being pushed to his breaking point. His reaction time had been hampered to the point that even a jerking motion to one side would not save him from disaster.

CRASH!

The loud cry of a Salamence drowned out the noise of the gallery as Jackie and her Garchomp rear-ended the red-winged Pokémon. Knowing his partner lacked the strength to recover, Josh braced for impact. The grasses beneath cushioned their fall some, but the two still looked quite roughed up, having blazed an unwanted trail through Sector 6's lawn. The Gym Leader's legs and midsection felt like they were being squeezed from the high rate of deceleration. Ultimately, the two would be alright, but in no condition to continue the race.

Only four would cross the finish line today.

FINAL LAP | OBSTACLE 3

Prompt: The home stretch was all that remained, an official standing near the starting arch and waving the checkered flag. There was little risk of an accident on this straight sprint to the finish! Now was the best opportunity for the four dragons to give it everything they had!

Target Number: 0 (Speed)

This was it Ghost could see the finish line. But with a quick glance to the back of him. He only saw two riders and whatnot. Either Josh was so far ahead he could not see him or so far behind he could not see him.
Either way, Ghost wanted to win and win badly as he looked on.

Only one thing that matter and that was the winner of this race. The fun it brought and the joy one had. These new ways to win Pokemon League badges were alright with him. With a smile on his face. He would use Roxie's "Dragon Dance one last one" As her speed increased even more.
It was all worth it as she played a very important role in this race and Ghost would forever be thankful to her for this. "Now then ride Roxie Ride." He would say to her.

As the dragon type rushed the finish line both with their eyes closed and going at supersonic speed. Or it sure as heck felt like it.

The Gym Leader wishes he could have been there... right in the thick of the race as rest of the dragons in the race, all glowing purple, hurtled toward the finish line. He could tell all four of them, even Jackie and Alphamax, were giving this last push everything they had. Resting his arm around his Salamence, Josh could still feel the dragon's pounding heart. "Don't sweat it, bud," he consoled the winged Pokémon. "It happens. It's part of racing."

While Lyndon and Resheph were in a commanding lead going into the final stretch, the other three spots in the race were quite contested. He wanted to award Ghost the Quick Badge. After clawing back so far on the second lap, he deserved it. He simply crossed his fingers for the young man and his Salamence. There wasn't too much to the end of the course; it was simply about drawing every bit of speed there was from one's partner. There would be plenty of time for the teams to catch their breath after the race.

Shawn, with no fear at all, dug his heels into Kokusho's sides. With a roar even Josh could feel, the Hydreigon hurtled forward, DRAGON DANCING alongside Ghost and Roxie in a battle of speed that left even the Gym Leader impressed. All eyes were on those two rather than the EXTREME SPEEDING Dragonair that left even the weakened Lyndon holding on for dear life. He had underestimated just how much power a dragon carrying him could put on his body. How did Josh withstand such force?

With one final thrust, the dark-type went snout-to-snout against the challenger and his Salamence, and there was no telling who would cross the finish line first. As Roxie began to pull away, Shawn had realized he had made a grave miscalculation; he had started the Dragon Dance too early. Its purple dragon energy faded out before Roxie's did. The race's results were clear; Ghost was the runner-up, with Shawn behind, and Jackie behind him.

After the racers had time to catch their breath, Josh included, he approached Ghost and his Salamence to congratulate them on a strong performance. "I know you're disappointed you didn't win the race, but Resheph's a tough one. She's my dragon of choice for races, and Lyndon did a remarkable job piloting her." The Gym Trainer's smile grew with the praise Josh gave him. "All you had to do to win the challenge, though, was to beat me. And you handily beat me, even after being so far behind early. That kind of tenacity will see you far in the Pokémon League."

Reaching into his pocket, he drew one of his Gym's Badges into a closed fist before presenting it toward Ghost. Opening it, the mark of prowess was plainly visible to them both. "Take it. It is the official Hoenn League Quick Badge. You and your Salamence shall be enshrined in the Gym's list of Qualified Riders as champions." He paused to let his friend claim his Badge and let the title sink in. Stumbling to his feet, he guided Ghost to the Gym's back door to check out. "...Ghost, we really should spend some quality time together soon. Shouldn't we?"

As the race died down and it all came down to it. Ghost and Roxie would come in second. She looked a bit sad the dragon type of his did.
But as he got down off of her. He would pat her head. So long as she did her best and to make the odds better neither one knew how to race Pokemon. But as Joah broke down the in and out of the gym. A smile would come across his face. To know that he was good enough to hang with the best racers in all the land. Soon Josh would alert him that he. Did not have to win the race but beat him.

It was a head shaker but alas. At least Ghost could say he had a blast. But soon Josh would pull out a badge. It was the quick badge. This was the first badge Ghost has won and this made him very happy. "Whoa, this is too crazy. Bam bam bam bam BAMMM!!! I can't believe this im one step closer to having all the badges and damn I feel good."

Soon he would follow Josh to the back. As he started to think about how he would be considered a champion rider. Ghost truly was honored that this was happening to him. Soon he would respond to Josh, "Yeah we should it's been a while but it's life. But you know what just hit my line and even if im a world away I will come to your aid."
