A brief silence took hold as Elisabeth dried her hands on her skirt, the directness of the question leaving little room for interpretation.[break][break]

"I joined Rocket willingly," she said instead, finally. "Not because I believe in its ideals, or anything so grand as that. But because I understand that true power thrives when it is not shackled by ethics or morality."[break][break]

The structures that had existed to protect Elisabeth from the abuse of her own husband's power had failed her in Kalos, over and over again. Politicians and the law. The 'freedom' of the press. The basic expectation of human decency and empathy from those aware of her plight.[break][break]

Reliance on those systems faltered, when you were perceived as the inherent flaw in the system, yourself.[break][break]

"I trust that so long as I am useful and loyal, Rocket will value me. Should that change, however, or should Rocket perceive such a change in me, I expect to be turned on like the wolves we are."[break][break]

She looked at him then, damp hands pressed on her lap.[break][break]

"I don't delude myself into thinking otherwise."

A flash of light across his phone screen attracted her attention, and as he glanced at it, she took a moment to do the same. The treason of Remiel Calcifet did not surprise her after their last conversation; rather than anger or shock, her expression was one of mild distaste.[break][break]

"I wonder what gives him more of a sense of security: his Avatar status, or the fact that he is the first in line to another region's throne," she remarked drily. In her case, neither such thing would defend her if she defected.[break][break]

Which made THEO BECKETT's offer all the more unexpected.[break][break]

She studied him for a moment, skepticism reflected in her eyes as she searched his face for further explanation.[break][break]

"Concerned about my welfare, Beckett?" she asked, a faintly teasing lilt to her voice. "Or do I seem more treasonous as of late?"[break][break]

Given the Nihilego toxins, she'd understand the latter point-of-view.

Curiosity restlessly ate at the edges of her thoughts as she listened, the man's stoic expression frustratingly unreadable.[break][break]

"I don't disagree," she conceded. "I personally hold no desire to foster discord. A Rocket divided cannot win against a League united."[break][break]

Her Budew toddled over, sulkily pouting as she flopped into the florist's lap, indifferent to the tension of the ongoing conversation. As if operating on reflex, Elisabeth's hand gently soothed the baby Pokémon with a pat on the head, though her attention remained on the man in front of her.[break][break]

Why was he asking her this? To admit doubts, as others had done, was to put yourself at grave risk. It was information that could be wielded against you to great effect. The very consideration of treason was as dangerous as treason itself.[break][break]

Thoughtcrime was, in fact, a punishable offense. One she had neither used against Rowan Wrynn nor Remiel Calcifet when they had shared that vulnerability with her, once upon a time.[break][break]

"I'm curious. What would you have said to Remiel Calcifet, had he come to you and shared his discontent?"

His was an honest answer, if a vague one. Elisabeth weighed its measure as she returned her Budew to a Pokeball, only stray grass leaves betraying the Grass-type had lain in her lap moments prior.[break][break]

"My trust is based on several things," she said, turning to him with a severity that was not unkind, but simply direct in its nature. "But first and foremost among them is the belief that I may act in the interest of my own self-preservation. I will not deny that our actions during METENO angered me for this reason, and this reason alone."[break][break]

A soft, disbelieving laugh escaped her as she shook her head, turning to look once more at the Bruxish in the water. Sunlight dappled against the surface, shimmering on the now healthy sheen of its scales. All traces of sickness and rot had evaporated, as if washed and cleansed away in the stream.[break][break]

"But I am not a fool, Underboss Beckett. I know I am not an Avatar. I understand that I am not a powerful being in the region of Hoenn or elsewhere. What power I do possess is due to my loyalty to Rocket, and it is far more than I could aspire to outside of it."[break][break]

Her hands wrung themselves in her lap as she frowned, turning to glance back at him.[break][break]

"There are always compromises. Power is never given freely, or without strings, in my experience. Not unless you are born into it."

She didn't know that about THEO BECKETT, no. This truth reflected itself in the open surprise she wore on her face.[break][break]

That strange era of peace in the wake of Silas's death had seemed an anomaly in a region that appeared to thrive on its own discontent. Rocket disbanding and rebuilding felt as inevitable as a sandcastle being rebuilt on the sand, despite knowing waves would topple it over and over again. Criminals existed in any region, no matter how spotless its governance.[break][break]

To return to such a life signified a distrust of that peace.[break][break]

"Freedom isn't as liberating as you think it will be, is it?" she agreed, and the rhetorical statement came from her own hard-won wisdom. "There is an emptiness in idleness. An uneasiness that comes from knowing no peace is everlasting."[break][break]

Though perhaps she and THEO BECKETT both valued conflict too much to value peace, in the end.[break][break]

Killing her abuser, and burning down everything he had built, had done nothing to answer the hunger of Elisabeth's vengeance. It had only left her without a fire to fan the flames of her resentment, devoid of any direction to place the spite she had nurtured and grown in herself for that loathsome decade.[break][break]

The hate remained, regardless of its original source rotting six feet underground.[break][break]

"I found my own freedom hollow and dissatisfying. The first time I felt alive again was when I joined Rocket in Kalos."[break][break]

This was where she differed from Remiel Calcifet and Rowan Wrynn. They believed they could be redeemed. She knew better.[break][break]

"I don't know that people like us belong in the light. If we can truly ever believe we are 'good,' if such a thing even matters."[break][break]

A sentiment the two of them had shared in the Transfer of Power.
