a small jangmo-o creeps up to them only to leap out of the bush in an attempt to scare them. he turns and laughs at it. feeling defeated, it slinks back into the bush.

Okay, now he knows it sounded goofy because Matias echoed it.[break][break]

His face heats on instinct. “I’m not a grandpa!” he squawks— bold words for someone who was literally just thinking it of himself moments before.[break][break]

He also wants to insist it’s not cute because he’s totally chill and cool, but that would probably just give his buddy more fodder to tease him with.[break][break]

Acting like stubborn kid, he kicks a pebble into the water, irritating a clamperl, though it does nothing to retaliate. Not aiding his cause in the least.

it's decided, then. that will be lam's new nickname. it's about as easy to say as lam which is nice.[break][break]

he stares at a druddigon that poses the same way matias usually stands. is it mirroring him? maybe it looks up to him and wants to be him? either way, matias shoos it away.[break][break]

"you got any drinks?"

Lam rolls his eyes, but lets out a good natured huff afterward. “Not gonna live that down, huh?”[break][break]

A starly flutters nearby— Lam whistles to it in a cadence he’s pretty sure is its typical song. Whether it is or isn’t, it flutters over to his open arm. Curious.[break][break]

Fingers smooth over the feathers of the small bird as he turns back toward Matias with a nod. “Uh yeah, in that cooler over there. Help yourself.” He nods over at a small handheld size container on the ground by an abandoned backpack and sketch pad.

it could always be worse. like stinky butt or something more creative.[break][break]

matias looks up at the starly and already knows that lam is going to catch it. he's the bird man, after all. grandpa bird?[break][break]

nodding, he heads over to the cooler and grabs himself a drink. he also notices the sketch pad, which he takes, and walks back over.[break][break]

"i've always wanted to be able to sketch."

“Is it?” His face scrunches skeptically before he laughs. It could be way more insulting than grandpa. That’s true enough.[break][break]

“Still dunno about cute though. Maybe if I start wearing glasses and lumpy cardigans. Maybe.” Well.. he does wear glasses, but usually only in the sanctity of his apartment. He’s gotta be at least a little less nerdy in public.[break][break]

Grandpa bird spies the pidove and is quick to extend his other arm for it. At this rate, he’ll be covered. All feathers. But he loves little birds best.[break][break][break][break]

“Oh, you found that?” Obviously…he’d left it laying out. His face warms with preemptive bashfulness regardless. “You still could. It’s all just practice, you know?”[break][break]

It’s all birds contained in those pages for the most part, occasionally his shinx. And oh—some sketches of his boyfriend. Little candid moments he didn’t realize Lam was basically snapshotting. Embarrassing, much?

yet another bird flutters their way and naturally it chooses lam over matias. not that he minds it all that much. he's not huge on birds.[break][break]

he spends his time casually flipping through the sketch pad instead.[break][break]

"how long does it take to, you know, become good at it? and do you think you could teach me?"

“Why are you determined to turn me old??” he scoffs before the sound dissolves into a laugh.[break][break]

Eventually he taps pokeballs to each little bird, but not before gifting them with birdseed from his pockets.[break][break]

A garchomp drifts through the water, fin up. Maybe it’s pretending to be a sharpedo.[break][break]

Lam, meanwhile, drifts back over to where Matias is still flipping through the drawings. “Guess it depends on how much of a knack you have for it when you’re starting.” A brow lifts.[break][break]

“I can try. You really want to learn?”

matias? an artist? being able to draw? he actually laughs at the thought because it sounds ridiculous.[break][break]

"i do, yeah."[break][break]

he looks up from the sketch pad with a look of determination in his eyes akin to one a young boy would have when starting their journey across the region.[break][break]

it's why he misses the sigilyph.[break][break]
